Phil Younghusband credits the growing popularity of football in the country to "media attention."
And he's glad that aside from promoting the national team Azkals, the sport will be underscored in segments that will be shown on AKTV.
He told the media during the show's launch, "Even though we had a little bit of success, we didn't have exposure...With the partnership with TV5 and AKTV, we have that opportunity now.
"We've always said that for football to become big, we need exposure. And I think we have that opportunity now.
"This is not just a short-term thing. It's a long-term plan. It's not gonna happen overnight. We educate Filipinos about football."
Their target: To reach out to more kids.
The two brothers are presently running the Younghusband Football Academy, which teaches young Pinoys to love the sport.
James said, "Me and Phil, our lives are football. So we talk football, breathe football, dream football. It's all we ever talk about. So we're very thankful to AKTV and TV5 for giving us this opportunity to spend our lives with football.
"The academy went really well. We learned a lot of things. We learned what we can do in the Philippines. We reached about three hundred kids. We probably wanted a bit more...to reach more kids in the Philippines.
"We really wanted to reach the kids who couldn't afford to come to our academy. So with AKTV, we now have that opportunity to reach the kids."
PINOYS' PERCEPTION OF FOOTBALL. The Filipino-British players defy the notion that "football is a high-end sport."
The older brother emphasized that "football is for all, it teaches you how to develop a healthy lifestyle, how to be a good person, discipline, how to treasure other people, and teamwork, how it can benefit you."
And they also want to correct the misconception that "football is a high-end sport."
James said, "In the Philippines, football is an elite sport. But everywhere around the world, it's considered a sport for the working person, the masses.
"In Brazil, they learn from the street, there's no equipment.
"Football is the kind of sport that you can make a goal with anything. And what we want to do in our [football academy] program is to bring football to the public and show them that football is a sport for every man.
"You don't need to be tall, you don't need to be well-to-do, things like that...and that's what we're trying to promote.
"Probably, it's time for the masses to realize that football is football."
The show, according to Phil, will "give training without people having to pay."
He added, "[What] we wanted to do in the academy is to reach those can't afford and we would have scholarships.
"We worked with DSWD [Dept. of Social Welfare and Development]. We worked with Gawad Kalinga."
PINOYS CAN LEARN FOOTBALL. Prior to the Azkals craze, Pinoys' reception to the sport was lukewarm, compared to how neighboring countries in Southeast Asia considered the World Cup as a big event.
Phil believes that "people can care about this team."
To elaborate, "On TV, they can watch games. But it's more than just watching the games. Filipinos can be educated.
"They need to look up to people and be able to copy the best.
"We can be the super players if we watch live or see on TV every week..."
James also stressed the "key role of the parents."
BASKETBALL VS FOOTBALL. At present, football fields have gotten busier. Some sports enthusiasts claim that it's overshadowing basketball.
James interjected, "I don't think football has an immediate effect, a direct effect on the attendance of basketball games.
"But I think this generation of people is going to become, if you look at the youngsters and their parents, they play the games like football and I think we've reached probably the youngest generation.
"But I don't think there's a direct correlation between the attendance of basketball games and the attendance of football games."
The younger Younghusband continued, "I think we have established that we're not trying to play basketball players and football players. We don't want to be competing with basketball, really. We just want to show people that there are other sports out there.
"If you're not good at basketball, try football. If you're not good at football, try basketball.
"We just want kids to lead a healthy lifestyle. Be creative. That's what kids wanna do. They wanna run around then go on, be creative. Play ball, and that's what we want to do also."
In closing, the handsome players of the Azkals assured the fans that in every game they play, "we want to win."
But as football ambassadors, "it can be enough," Phil said.
James threw in, "Sustain the interest and the enthusiasm, that's where we need to achieve in the program.
"For me, it's getting there, [but] there will be things that need to be improved so, I think, over time, it will happen."
