This June, Filipino DC Comics fans all over the country will certainly be in a joyful mood as DC Comics celebrates it's 75th anniversary. DC, the company that brought us Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and other memorable characters, wants to thank fans for supporting 75 years of great characters and stories.
In a press launch last May 26 at Terry's Selection, The Podium, Quezon City, DC Philippines Sales Director Ailea Zialcita unveiled fan-targeted events for the anniversary, including special edition merchandise, a comics mini-museum, and an extreme outdoor sports activity to be held on Father's Day at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.
But what gets fans most excited is the grand toy convention, that will take place on June 19 and 20. Already at it's 9th inception, the toy convention brings together toy collectors, comics enthusiasts, and superhero movie fans all over the country.
According to Cholo Mallillin of Collectors Unlimited, the group that organized the 9th toy convention, Kapuso stars are expected to grace the event.
"GMA-7 is partnering with us again so we expect to see their stars there, including Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera," he told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).
Ailea Zialcita added, "Dingdong Dantes is a big comic fan. He says he's the superhero's dead ringer. I will not contest that."
Anthony Pangilinan, host of the press briefing, expressed that he will bring his wife Maricel Laxa and their four children to the toy convention. They will be dressed in superhero costumes.
"We will pick superhero costumes according to our personalities," Pangilinan said.
Collectibles Unlimited also encourages fans to come to the toy convention dressed up in their favorite superhero costume. "We want to break the Guinness World Record for the most costumed people under one roof," Mallillin added.
Aside from the costumed players, prestigious toy collectors plan to display their prized collections in the toy convention. Glenmarc "The Flash" Antonio, for instance, is planning to display the largest collection of The Flash action figures there.
Antonio's passion for The Flash has been featured in several local shows, including Mel & Joey, and has been recognized abroad. "He's my childhood hero," he told PEP.
Collector Jeffrey Quillope also plans to showcase his Superman collection, which includes a rare Red Superman action figure. Many other collectors plan to do the same.
The toy convention is also a place where fans can talk about their DC movies, including the award-winning The Dark Knight, and two upcoming DC movies: Jonah Hex this June, and The Green Lantern next year.
"Fans are surely excited to see these movies," Ailea Zialcita said. "DC Comics surely has inspired many Filipinos, not just in the stories and the characters it has, but also in the lessons it imparts to the youth."
The 9th toy convention will be held on June 19 and 20 at the trade halls of SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.
