Miriam Quiambao supports call to tap an interpreter during international beauty pageants

"Anything is possible for as long as merong offer or merong panibagong concept for us, then that's great," says Miriam Quiambao on the possibility of being reunited with former Extra Challenge co-host Paolo Bediones in a show.

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1999 Miriam Quiambao recalled her past experience while hosting the defunct GMA-7 reality show Extra Challenge during an early morning event held yesterday, October 12, at the SM Supermarket, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Miriam—together with Kristine Hermosa, Melissa Ricks, Empress Schuck, and Maja Salvador—participated in Procter & Gamble's 75th anniversary treat, where the stars personally assisted the grocery shoppers.

.

"It was fun and sanay naman din ako to try different jobs kasi ginawa namin 'yon before sa Extra Challenge. So, parang repeat lang 'yon. And now as a saleslady, it was fun kasi ang dami ding mga ate, mommy, 'tsaka mga tita na namili," Miriam told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) after eating lunch at a restaurant inside the mall.

Trying on different jobs is not new for Miriam. In fact, the morena beauty queen is currently juggling various hats: actress, host, and entrepreneur.

"Lately, I'm taking care of my business also kasi, di ba, early this year nag-teleserye ako? Tapos nag-Showtime ako. Then, meron akong teleserye coming out on TV5 na 5-Star Specials, which I think they're going to release this November.

"Meron pa rin akong hosting and on top of that, I also have my real-estate business. So, I'm trying to juggle my left-brain job and my right-brain job," beamed Miriam.

DEFENDING VENUS RAJ. Although it's been a decade since Miriam competed in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant (then in Trinidad and Tobago), she understands that questions about beauty pageants and candidates will always come up for her to answer.

Lately, there's been a renewed call for an interpreter to assist the country's representatives in answering beauty-pageant questions.

Although most Filipino contestants understand and can speak English, observers believe that a translator can improve a candidate's chance to win the crown.

Miriam shares this belief, saying that it certainly wouldn't hurt to try the same approach used by other countries, particularly most of our Asian neighbors.

"Malaking bagay 'yon kasi it really puts the candidate in a position where she will feel most comfortable. Mahirap kasi pag ang dami mo na ngang pressure, tapos mahirap pa 'yong tanong sa 'yo, tapos magta-translate ka pa in your mind from Filipino to English.

The talk on whether it would be better to tap an interpreter during international pageants gained ground after our bet in the Miss Universe 2010, Maria Venus Raj, failed to impress the judges during  the Q&A segment towards the end of the competition. She won as fourth runner-up.

"In defense of her, hindi naman talaga madali na nasa harap ka ng buong mundo tapos tinatanong ka ng isang challenging question, di ba? Pero I have to give it to her.

"She did naman her best and umabot naman siya ng top five, di ba? So, five out of eighty-five is really not an easy feat and we're all proud of her nonetheless," said the Miss Universe 1999 1st runner-up.

Nope. Kahit walang tanungan portion, may mas magaganda sa kanya among the finalists. Tingin ko lang naman, ano, from the eyes of a man.

Kahit inglesin pa niya, wala pa ring lusot.

Even sa U.S.
Did they now show clips of even Obama and Bush, not being able to answer the same question?

US compared outside the US. Ang payo nila sa mga college grads, to look overseas for jobs. LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE. SOAK THE CULTURE. Not only shd the newbies in the job market learn new language, but also understand the culture. If ever, siguro mag aral ng endearing Chinese phrases ang ating kandidata, to deliver sa pageant, to the audience sa venue mismo. Venezuela is the country that won most beauty titles, far more than panalo ng Pinas. How come they kept winning, despite using an interpreter? Ang importante iyong laman ng sagot, hindi importante if the language used is english, tagalog, spanish, or mandarin.

    To Maldito

Even sa U.S.

May kulang...

Definitley, yes to getting interpreter sa ating kandidata.

yup. i agree with you. mga pinoy lang naman ang tumitingala sa mga magaling mag-ingles kahit walang substance. kawawa naman kasi atin ang mga nagkakamali sa ingles nila o di americanize ang accent, pinagtatawanan. marami naman ang di lumaki na nag-iingles at sa eskuwela lang ginagamit kung kinakailangan. kung di mother tongue, syempre mahirap. dapat ang ikahiya eh yung mali mali ang tagalog at kinaka

i really loved miriam when she did extra challenge then. so cool. so natural. so refreshing.
i wish she comes back to GMA7 and does a lifestyle show with Iza Calzado and Chynna Ortaleza. that already sounds wonderful to me.

I think it is the essense of your answer and the way you project yourself that will determine if you are to be crowned plus regal and aura mo. Bobita Mirasol si Melanie, being too young, pero very confident siya kaya siya nanalo.
Charlene is good in English, pero kasi di naman regal ang beauty niya, actually medyo mukhang matrona kaya di siya nag-win.
Gloria Diaz is not pretty pero very regal ang dating niya and very confident and witty pa kaya win siya.

Ruffa speaks good English pero di rin siya win. obvious kasing aral ang mga kilos niya, hindi natural. and so on and on.

Wrong career move wikanga.
