Miss Universe 2011 runner-up Shamcey Supsup says moving the Miss Universe pageant to a later date has both an advantage and disadvantage for reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Janine Mari Tugonon.
Usually the prestigious beauty pageant takes place during the third quarter of the year. This year, however, the contest was moved to December.
“It’s a different thing now kasi late na rin naman ‘yong pageant. So, parang I don’t know if it’s a good thing or it’s a bad thing,” Shamcey said in interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other media during the press launch of the 30th anniversary celebration of Operation Smile last week.
The 26-year-old beauty queen noted, “It’s a good thing kasi she has more time to prepare.
“The bad thing lang is parang ang tagal mawala ng tension kasi talagang she has to prepare and prepare.
“After the Miss Universe pageant, the next year, start na ulit ng Binibining Pilipinas so, parang hectic na ang later [part] ng year niya.”
As Janine’s predecessor, Shamcey said she always gives her advice about what to expect during the big day.
“Lagi naman kaming nag-uusap nito, e. Hindi naman ‘yong formal.
“Every time kinukumusta ko siya how she is,” she narrated.
Despite the pressure, according to Shamcey, it’s also important to Janine to always remember, “Matagal pa naman ang pageant kaya slow down lang and enjoy her reign.”
“JUST DO YOUR BEST.” As a former representative of the Philippines, Shamcey has a lot to share with Janine when it comes to handling the pressure that comes along with the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title.
“I know how she feels naman. I know how she feels kasi iba, e. Iba ‘yong pressure,” she recalled.
“Even during my time, parang you are scared to let the country down and the people who support you.
“Again, you can do your best, but that’s all you can do. There will be judges, di ba? There will be preferences, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
“What you can do is just do your best and hope that it is you that they wanna win, hanggang doon lang.”
