Wearing a casual long-sleeved striped shirt, Bernard Palanca looked very much in shape as he joined the other cast members of GMA-7's upcoming primetime series Panday Kids in mingling with the members of the entertainment press last February 16 at Studio 5 of the GMA Network Center in Quezon City.
Bernard gained considerable weight in the past, prompting the actor to engage in various physical activities to shed off excess pounds.
"Diet, none, I eat what I want. The important thing lang is I know if I'm eating more than the usual, then I work doubly hard. I work out once in a while but it's mostly sports. I do boxing and martial arts. I recently started doing free running so I'm in that athletic zone ulit," Bernard told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an interview after the presentation of the cast members.
He added, "It's funny coz the older I get, the younger I want to feel physically and 'yon nga, with how big I got before I said never again... 'Wag na 'wag nang mauulit 'yon. So, ngayon I make sure talaga na I get myself in shape."
EVENTS ORGANIZER. Aside from acting and physical activities, Bernard also keeps himself preoccupied through organizing events commissioned by companies and various groups. His first official project as an event organizer happened two weeks ago in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.
"Last year I got myself into producing events and I just finished an event two weeks ago, 'The Arts and Music Festival.' Now, I'm still kind of breathing from that kasi that's one year of preparation na sobrang stressful. Grabe magpatayo ng event, it's not a joke. So, I was busy with that and now we're just waiting na lang for the payback."
All the hard work was worth it according to Bernard. He and his partners were surprised with the successful turnout of the event. "It did better than we expected," he said. "I'm happy and itutuloy ko , 'yong producing on the side, though acting pa rin is my priority."
Being an actor helped a lot in stirring Bernard's interest in organizing events since he was exposed to a lot of happenings. The idea of starting up a company together with some friends even crossed Bernard's mind seven years ago. Lack of time along with changing personal priorities, however, prevented the idea from completely materializing until recently when the opportunity presented itself.
"Last year was my first event so I'm still learning. I wanted to learn lang and I wanted to have knowledge on doing something else aside from acting," Bernard said.
GLAD FOR RICA. Settling down is not part of Bernard's immediate itinerary, saying that his mindset when it comes to love and relationship is, "Take it as it comes."
The subject was somehow relevant considering that Bernard's ex-girlfriend, television host and former sexy actress Rica Peralejo, recently tied the knot with non-showbiz boyfriend Joseph Bonifacio.
"I haven't spoken or seen Rica in years and ever since naman, that's her own life na. I took myself away from it na, so kung ano mang mangyari sa kanya from that point on until today, that's already none of my business," said Bernard.
He added, "When I found out [about the wedding], all I can say really is congratulations to her and her husband and I wish her all the best."
As for his relationship with former home network ABS-CBN, Bernard clarified that there was no unsettled issue when he decided to join the freelance bandwagon.
"I've been a freelancer for a few years already. I like the freedom of being able to do anything. Number one, there are more options and, number two, there are more opportunities talaga. I'm not one of those people na I'll take sides kasi ABS-CBN has always been good to me and GMA-7 is really, really good to me. My heart really goes out to both and like what I've said, kung saan [may] trabaho, doon ako."
