Bustamante beats Reyes in Japan Open finals; duo still dominating after more than 3 decades Tongue
Filipino Sports ExaminerDennis "dSource" Guillermo

Can you say living legends?

Efren "Bata" Reyes and Francisco "Django" Bustamante have both dominated the game of pool since the '80's and seem to just get better through time like fine wine.

Add the Japan Open to their list of conquests as both men met once again in familiar territory which is the final table of any pool/ billiards event.

Bustamante topped Reyes 11-5 at the 23rd Annual Japan Open 9-Ball Championship last week and was the third for Bustamante in the said event. He won his previous trophies back in 2002 and 1992.

Bustamante's path to the finals included wins over Toshiyuki Sugawara and countryman Jeffrey De Luna, while Reyes scored wins over Naoyuki Oi and Toru Kuribayashi on his way to the finals.

Bustamante pocketed 1,500,000 Japanese Yen (more than $16,000) for his winnings, while Reyes took home 750,000 Yen (more than $8,000).

How Manny Villar lied and used the death of his brother Danny Angry
AS I WRECK THIS CHAIR By William M. Esposo (The Philippine Star) Updated March 28, 2010 12:00 AM

“Nakaranas na ba kayong ... mamatayan ng kapatid dahil wala kang pera pangpagamot (Have you experienced losing a brother because you did not have the money to provide him proper medical care)? — Manny Villar asked in his “PANATA (Advocacy)” TV commercial. Villar was referring to his younger brother Danny who passed away on October 1962. In the same commercial, Villar’s 1962 photo with his younger brother was shown.

This portrayal of being poor once upon a time is a fantasy which comes in a series of similar attempts by Villar to create empathy with the nearly 90% of voters who belong to the socio-economic classes D and E. However, this particular attempt to use his late brother Danny to further his political ambition showed that Villar is as capable of lying just like Madame Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (GMA).

Two public documents — the death certificate of Danny B. Villar and the Transfer Certificate of Title (TCT number: 135396/3194) of the 560 square meter property in the upper class San Rafael Village of Navotas where the Villars had lived when Danny died — shattered this ONCE POOR fantasy that Villar has been peddling.

What the San Rafael Village TCT presents:

1. Before 1962, the Villars bought 560 square meters (SQM) of high valued real estate on Bernardo Street in San Rafael Village where the more affluent folks in the Tondo-Navotas area resided.

2. The DEATH CERTIFICATE of the deceased Danny B. Villar established that they were already residing there in 1962.

3. Based on 2009 prices, the P16,000 GSIS (Government Service Insurance System) mortgage mentioned in the TCT — not necessarily the total cost of the two 280 SQM lots — is now the equivalent of P1,140,000.00. Poor people today cannot even borrow P200,000. Those who are familiar with the subdivision say that the cost per SQM in San Rafael Village today would be around P10,000 per SQM or an equivalent of around P5,600,000 for the entire property.

4. Jun Borres, the present owner who is using the 560 SQM property as offices of his firm, Jumbo Fishing, stated that when they bought it in 1987 - it had a one and a half floor house. The ground floor was made of concrete while the upstairs was made of wood. This was typical upper middle class and upper class dwelling in the 1960s.

Implications of the San Rafael Village ownership

1. Together with established Manny Villar bio information, they could not have been dirt poor to be able to move to San Rafael Village before 1962. His mother was a seafood (shrimp, crab and fish) dealer in Divisoria Market, not a fish vendor as what Villar tries to project. A seafood dealer supplies the vendors. For a family of 11, they ate canned corned beef — which Manny Villar admitted on his earlier TV ad. His father was a government official, said to be a Budget Officer of the then DANR (Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources) under which was the Fisheries Bureau. Manny Villar studied in private schools — the Holy Child Catholic School for elementary and Mapua Institute of Technology for High School. Poor folks send their kids to public schools.

2. Villar’s parents must have had a sizeable combined income to be able to buy the San Rafael Village property. The 560 SQM size demonstrates their financial capacity. If they could, poor people buy lots sized less than 100 SQMs. Villar’s father must also be making a sizeable income from the government to be able to borrow P16,000 from the GSIS. In 1962, senior executives in big corporations made monthly salaries of about P2,000.

What Danny B. Villar’s DEATH CERTIFICATE reveals:

1. It is NOT TRUE that Danny died because they were poor and could not afford proper health care. The stated residence in Danny’s death certificate was the San Rafael Village property.

2. The BIG LIE is further proved by the fact that Danny stayed 13 days at the FEU (Far Eastern University) Hospital where he expired at age 3 years and 8 months. If they were really poor, the PGH (Philippine General Hospital) would have been the affordable hospital to bring Danny. He was definitely given proper health care. FEU Hospital was one of the top hospitals in 1962, before the establishment of the Makati Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital.

3. Danny died from CARDIAC and RESPIRATORY FAILURE resulting from COMPLICATIONS OF LEUKEMIA. In 1962, there was no bone marrow transplantatio n and chemotherapy yet and everyone whether rich or poor died from contracting leukemia.

4. Upon Danny’s death, his remains were turned over to LA FUNERARIA PAZ — then, until now, considered one of the top two mortuaries (Funeraria Nacional, the other). This further disproved Manny Villar’s claim that Danny died because they did not have the money to take care of him.

When Iggy Arroyo was seen as having taken the Jose Pidal rap for his elder brother Mike, many folks felt that it was rather low of Mike Arroyo to place his younger brother at risk. Our culture expects the older brother to protect the younger brother.

In that regard, we can consider Manny Villar as having done worse than Mike Arroyo. At least, Iggy Arroyo was alive and kicking and he could have opted to stay out of the Jose Pidal controversy. But in the case of Manny and Danny Villar, Danny was used to promote a myth when Danny was in no position to agree to his elder brother Manny’s portrayal of his death.

With the propagation of this ONCE POOR fantasy, don’t you think that Manny Villar also desecrated the memory and honor of his parents who strove to be able to provide their children quality education and an upper class domicile?

If Manny Villar can lie and use his dead younger brother like this, what makes you think that he will really improve and not worsen your life? What makes you think that he is not as greedy as he is being charged in this presidential campaign? What makes you think that you can trust Manny Villar?

Pangilinan apologizes for ‘borrowing’ from other graduation speeches  Cheesy
GMANews.TV
GMANews.TV - Sunday, April 4

Manuel V. Pangilinan, one of the country's most prominent businessmen, has admitted to "borrowing" from other graduation speeches for his commencement address to Ateneo graduates last month.

In a letter to Ateneo University president Ben Nebres that was published on the Ateneo web site Saturday night, Pangilinan said, “I wish to express my sincerest apology to you, the University and to the 2010 graduating class."

Reports of plagiarism in Pangilinan’s commencement address to the “Ateneo's Sesquicentenni al Batch" last March 27 had been circulating on Facebook, comparing passages from his speech with commencement addresses by JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels, and to a lesser extent, Oprah Winfrey.

“I am told further that comments posted on Facebook have started to spill beyond graduation," Pangilinan wrote Nebres, “and are now alluding to my misconduct with respect to Meralco, with former President Erap, and so forth. Under the circumstances, it is best for the Ateneo and myself to shorten the life of this controversy and prevent it from spinning out of control."

He acknowledged that “this has been a source of deep personal embarrassment for me," and informed Nebres that he was retiring from his official duties at the Ateneo, his alma mater.

Pangilinan is chair of the Ateneo Board of Trustees. – Howie Severino, Pia Faustino, GMANews.TV

From the makers of Bad Idea Jeans: Pranking Kenyon Martin Angry
By Trey Kerby

Even though I'm sure he's nice, Kenyon Martin(notes) is kind of a scary guy. First off, he's huge, no duh. That alone would be enough to deter me from messing with him. But then, he also seems pretty angry, or at least short tempered. And, of course, he's always ready to drop the hammer whenever he deems it necessary which is pretty often. Basically, there are a lot of reasons I wouldn't pull a prank on Kenyon Martin.

Apparently, a former Nuggets ball boy felt differently, filling Martin's Range Rover with buttered popcorn. You can imagine how well that went over.

"That ain't no [expletive] joke," Martin said. "I'm going to find out who did it ... put my [expletive] hands on one of y'all. I'm going to put my hands on whoever did it. You better believe that. It's [expletive] personal. You better believe it."

After threatening violence, Kenyon then threatened to skip the playoffs if no one confessed. Yikes.

On one hand, April Fool's Day pranks are basically the worst unless you're between 6 and 12 years old. Grown-ups shouldn't really be trying to fool each other, should they? I don't think so either, so I at least "get" why Kenyon Martin is upset.

On the other hand — relax, Kenyon Martin. If someone pulls a prank on you, you don't necessarily threaten to "put hands" on them. That seems like a bit of an over-reaction. Especially, when you consider Kenyon is going to make more than $32 million between this season and next. He can probably afford to pick a new Range Rover or eight. Just be cool like Spencer Hawes(notes) was when he filled Jason Thompson's "'Scalade" with popcorn. It'll be okay.

In the end, everything turned out just fine.

"It was just an April Fools joke that went horribly wrong," said a member of the Nuggets organization who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "The kid thought it would be funny and it wasn't. Kenyon was back at practice today and everything was fine between him and his teammates."

To be fair to the ball boy, it would be kind of funny to see Kenyon Martin get really upset about popcorn in his truck. But do you really want to make Kenyon Martin that angry? Me neither.

Clijsters needs less than hour to beat Venus for Key Biscayne title Angry
April 3, 2010/CBSSports.com

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Serena Williams cupped a hand to her mouth and hollered from her front-row seat, like any other fan hoping to see a better match.

Or at least see Venus Williams win a point.

Kim Clijsters claimed another trophy in her career comeback Saturday by beating the older Williams 6-2, 6-1 in the final of the Sony Ericsson Open.

The match was even more lopsided than the score might suggest. Clijsters won 17 consecutive points in the second set, the equivalent of more than four games.

"It wasn't my best day," Williams said. "She played extremely solid, but it's not like I was blown off the court. Unfortunately, I was my own worst enemy."

Mercifully, it lasted only 58 minutes, ending with some ticket-holders still snarled in traffic on the causeway to the island.

When Williams hit one final errant forehand on match point, Clijsters raised her arms in triumph. Williams greeted her at the net with a gracious grin.

"I felt like from the beginning I was ready to go and really seeing the ball well," Clijsters said. "Of course she hit a lot of easy mistakes today, so I was just really trying to not lose my rhythm."

Politics seen in MMDA’s changing colors
By Riziel Ann Agaloos Cabreros and Camille Pablo de Jesus
VERA Files

Pink fences on Quezon Avenue  Roll Eyes

The greening of MMDA’s fences has been criticized for allegedly being politically motivated, especially because green is the signature color of Gilbert Teodoro, presidential bet of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-Christian Muslim Democrats Party. The color change began almost at the onset of the election campaign.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has, in fact, warned the MMDA, an agency directly under the Office of the President, of the “unfair advantage” that its new color scheme gives Teodoro.

But MMDA officials said the color just happens to be the personal favorite of Inocentes, who has been described in news reports as a “recreational farmer.”

Chaos rules over the past month
April, 5, 2010

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- When you look back on what some European players have taken to calling "the American hard-court season," neglecting to add an NFL-style Roman numeral I to the term, you might be tempted to think that the lunatics are in charge of the asylum. And that's not such a bad thing.

Remember the halcyon days when you could watch Indian Wells and Miami with half an eye until the inevitable Roger Federer versus Novak Djokovic, or Andy Murray versus Rafael Nadal final rolled around? On the WTA side, if it weren't for the resurgent Belgians, Venus Williams might have been happily beating on Marion Bartoli in the Miami final. Instead, Venus took a whipping on her home court from Kim Clijsters -- a player who was happily retired at this time last year.

The eight finalists in the two big hard-court events this year were Jelena Jankovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Andy Roddick (with two finals, he was both the rock and the star of the spring), Ivan Ljubicic and Tomas Berdych. Only two of those players have won multiple majors, four have won none at all. We won't even bother to make a list of the upsets we saw over the last month; it would produce a document thicker than the recent health care bill.

So are there any real takeaways to talk about here, other than the suggestion that chaos is the word of the day (and just think, U.S. Open champ Juan Martin del Potro didn't even play these events, something I'm pretty sure Roddick isn't overly upset about).

Actually, yes.

1. Rafael Nadal is back. When Nadal said two semis in the American hard-court season was a good result for him, he wasn't just blowing smoke. Nadal's familiar joie de combat and consistency appear to have returned in full flower, and if he faltered at the penultimate step at Indian Wells and Miami, remember that he lost to the eventual winner on both occasions. It's not like there's any question of how well or badly Nadal would react to having to play a big final -- we know he's a stud. If I were one of his rivals with the clay season coming up, I'd be afraid -- very afraid.

2. The Williams sisters have their work cut out for them. Before the Miami final, it looked as if Venus might be embarking on something like a serious resurgence. But she looked totally out of sync in Miami in the biggest match she's played since the Australian Open. With the clay-court season coming up, her tendency to spray balls all over the place (at times, even when she survives to win) can't be a good sign.

Serena has been MIA, theoretically with a knee injury. Serena hasn't been past the quarterfinals at the next major, the French Open, since she made the semis in 2003, and the trend in Paris has been downward ever since (to which she might respond, "Ask me if I care"). Williams sisters fans might have to wait for Wimbledon for their pound of flesh.

3. Andy Roddick is alive and well, thank you. There were serious questions about his spirit and game after he tailed off in the wake of that heartbreaking loss in the Wimbledon final to Federer last summer, but the events of the past month leave no doubt that, if anything, that epic loss only served to motivate and toughen him up. Call me crazy, but I think Roddick can do well on clay (let's leave the explanation for another time), and if he does, it will only add to what has become an impressive body of tennis knowledge and increasingly well-honed skills. When a guy is both very tough (not that there was ever any doubt about that) and smart, there's no limit what he can do, especially with a break here and there.

4. The Belgians will come on strong. Neither Kim Clijsters nor Justine Henin has played what could be called a home match on clay since she came out of seclusion, and both of them could come up big in the next few months. Clay is Henin's favorite surface and the very words "Roland Garros" make her salivate.

Clijsters prefers hard courts, but her commitment to aggressive baseline tennis will pay off on slower surfaces, too, and her all-around professionalis m means she'll be fit and ready for the grind on red dirt. Given the beatings Justine has taken from Kim on cement, you can bet she's eager to catch her on clay.

5. The bloom is off the Serbian tennis rose. It hasn't even been three years since that Balkan state was the toast of tennis, with Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic seeming destined for Grand Slam glory. In the interim, the trio has accounted for two major titles (Djokovic's Australian Open win, and Ivanovic's triumph at Roland Garros), but none since the spring of 2008. The Balkan juggernaut has come to a grinding halt.

Although Djokovic is hanging in there (albeit struggling) near the top of the men's game, he's progressively looked less rather than more convincing. Ivanovic has fallen off the radar, and Jankovic has had a baffling roller-coaster ride that could land her anywhere. They've achieved a lot, but they've broken many hearts, too. And as a result they can't be entirely trusted.

So admit it, don't you miss Dinara Safina, even just a little bit?

Rochus wins one for the little guys Angry
Richard Evans

No question that Rochus deserved this victory. Djokovic was decent enough to say so himself: “He was playing really well today and I want to congratulate him. He deserved it.”

Rochus won because he maintained a positive attitude, even after missing chances to close it out in two sets. He had the Serb down 0-40 on his serve at 3-3 in the second set and missed a fourth break point when Djokovic came up with one of his better points — a deep off-forehand winner. But in the previous game, in which the Belgian lost his early break, he ended a truly spectacular rally on game point by putting a forehand fractionally wide. Sixteen times the ball crossed the net and on at least six occasions, the ball either hit the line or dropped inches inside the apex of the court.

Rochus has long been known as one of the cleanest hitters of a tennis ball on the tour. He exhibits a classic one-handed backhand and wins points through timing and technique. He talked about being able to move Djokovic around with his forehand but on three occasions he cut short a long rally by turning the wrist and sending a bullet of a backhand straight up the line for a winner. You have to be good to pull that off against someone like Djokovic.

As for the Serb, we have not seen the best of him since he bore the brunt of the pressure in that Davis Cup tie against the United States in Belgrade four weeks ago. It was windy and humid here — conditions that seemed to affect him more than his opponent. Frequently forehands flew long for no apparent reason and he never served well.

“It’s obvious I don’t feel great on court,” he said. “Everybody could see that. Life goes on, you know. I’ve gotta rest now and try to make up for these defeats on clay courts.”
