Baby James Villar’s ‘secret endorser’ By Nikko Dizon Philippine Daily Inquirer 04/07/2010 BANGUI, ILOCOS NORTE— Out of the mouths of babes come the best endorsements—particularly if the child is Baby James Yap.
At a recent campaign sortie of the Liberal Party in Bacolod City, Baby James, a nephew of Liberal Party standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, innocently made a pitch for his uncle’s closest rival.
The story of how the child blurted out “Villar!” on stage, while his mother was holding him in her arms, caused Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manuel Villar to smile widely.
“I am happy, and it’s a huge honor for me to be liked by children because it’s the children who are the most honest [persons],” Villar said Tuesday in Filipino at a press conference, drawing laughter and cheers from his supporters.
The press conference was held in a coffee shop by the sea where the famous Bangui windmills stand.
Baby James is the 3-year-old son of Noynoy Aquino’s youngest sister, celebrity TV host Kris Aquino, and her husband, basketball superstar James Yap.
The public took notice of his endearing ways during the wide TV coverage of the wake and funeral of his grandmother, former President Corazon Aquino, who died of colon cancer in August 2009.
YouTube
Aside from appearing with his mother in a soap opera, Baby James has also been tagging along in his uncle’s campaign sorties because of insistent public demand.
A short clip posted on the video-sharing site YouTube showed Kris Aquino onstage carrying Baby James in her arms and telling him to greet the crowd.
“Hallow!” the boy said into the mic. “Hello!” the crowd roared back.
Then, with a big smile on his face, Baby James said, “Villar!”
The clip showed his mother looking bewildered, turning him away from the crowd, and mouthing “No!”
Observers said Baby James had probably seen and heard Villar’s ubiquitous political advertisements on TV showing children singing “Naging Mahirap/Dagat ng Basura” and “Puedeng Mangarap/Hindi Bawal Mangarap ang Mahirap.”
The jingles have become hugely popular among children, who would sing aloud and call out his name by way of greeting the candidate in his campaign sorties.
YouTube posts have tagged Baby James as “Villar’s secret endorser,” an apparent play on the LP allegation that the billionaire politician is the “secret candidate” of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroy

iPad owners raise Wi-Fi issues Agence France-Presse
WASHINGTON—As Apple iPad owners around the United States play with their new machines, some are complaining about the Wi-Fi connectivity of the devices. An online Apple support page has received dozens of messages from iPad owners about erratic Wi-Fi service and so have other sites dedicated to Apple products such as MacRumors.com. The extent of the problem was not immediately clear as many owners of Apple's new touchscreen tablet computer, which went on sale in the United States on Saturday, reported that their Wi-Fi reception was just fine. "Wi-Fi reception seems weak with slow downloads," a message from "Dr. JB" said on the Apple support page devoted to comments about "Weak WiFi." "Anyone else having Wi-Fi issues?" "Yes, I'm having the same issues," replied "Tangerine23." "Same issue. Weak signal on the iPad, same spot iPhone works great. Very frustrating," said "prb44t." "My signal keeps fluctuating from strong to weak, while my MacBook and iPhone show a consistent signal at the same location," said "Andrew79." An iPad owner named Andy Murdock, however, said he was "not having any problems, wi-fi strength full power all over my house" and others also said they were getting a consistently strong signal. Some iPad owners speculated the problem may be related to the placement of the Wi-Fi antenna on the device while others said it could be a software bug. Apple has a help page on Wi-Fi at support.apple. com called "Troubleshootin g Wi-Fi networks and connections." The support page provides advice for iPad users who are unable to locate a Wi-Fi network, access the Internet or report weak or low Wi-Fi signal strength. On Monday, Apple posted a notification stating that "under certain conditions, iPad may not automatically rejoin a known Wi-Fi network after restart or waking from sleep" and provided a fix for the issue. The California-based company said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the United States on its first day of availability on Saturday. The model that went on sale Saturday features Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, while a model offering both Wi-Fi and 3G cellular connectivity will be released in late April.

Martina Navratilova Has Breast Cancer By Lorenzo Benet Tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease was detected early, and the prognosis is said to be excellent.
"I cried," Navratilova, 53, tells PEOPLE about the moment in February when a biopsy came back positive after a routine mammogram revealed a cluster in her left breast. "It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it's completely out of my hands."
She was diagnosed with a non-invasive form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS, which in her case was confined to the milk ducts and had not spread to the breast tissue. "It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer," Dr. Mindy Nagle, a good friend of Navratilova's (and her ob gyn), tells PEOPLE.
Navratilova had a lumpectomy and will begin six weeks of radiation therapy in May.
Dr. Shelley Hwang, a breast surgeon at UC San Francisco, says DCIS strikes almost 70,000 American women annually and accounts for about one-fifth of all new diagnosed breast cancers. "The prognosis of someone with DCIS is excellent," she says. "There's only a one-percent chance of anyone with this diagnosis would die of breast cancer."
The nine-time Wimbledon champion, who still plays tennis and ice hockey and competes in triathlons, says she is lucky, as she had not been getting regular checkups.
"I went four years between mammograms," she tells PEOPLE. "I let it slide. Everyone gets busy, but don't make excuses. I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me. Another year and I could have been in big trouble."
In her role as a health and fitness ambassador for AARP, Navratilova will be chatting live on the group's Web site on Thursday at noon.

Doc on LeBron: 'I like the hatred' 07:18 AM ET 04.07 | In a piece where he talked about Rasheed Wallace's emotional "hijacks," Celtics head coach Doc Rivers responded in kind to LeBron James' thought that the NBA needs some old-school hate in its matchups. "Well, I like the hatred," Rivers said. "I think that's good. I do think the two teams don't like each other for whatever reason, and I don't ever think that's a bad thing personally. I think that's a good thing." Told that James believes the NBA needs to rekindle the nastiness between teams of '80s and '90s, Rivers said, "I'm all for it. I love it. He's the new leader. I think we should all listen to LeBron if that's what he's saying. I really believe that." The coach then traced the peace on NBA earth back to AAU ball when players become friendly. "It drives me nuts," he said.Boston Herald

Noynoy: Psych claims smack of detractors’ desperation
CABANATUAN CITY, Nueva Ecija – Presidential aspirant Sen. Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III on Thursday laughed off the information circulating on the Internet regarding his mental condition.
“You know, anybody who reads it sees how ridiculous it is. Obviously, it’s a plan," Aquino said in an ambush interview during a rally here.
“They are so desperate they are not scraping a barrel. They are inventing a barrel from where they are scraping stories from," he added, alluding to his political opponents.
Aquino was referring to supposed three-page medical report that bears the purported letterhead of the Ateneo de Manila University Psychology Department and has the signature of Fr. Carmelo Caluag, SJ showing that he had sought psychiatric help in 1996.
A scanned copy of the report has been circulating on the Internet.
Caluag, in a statement, denied preparing the report.
“I have just read the said report and would like to put it on record that it is definitely not my work. I am a teacher, educator, and priest both by training and vocation. I am in no way competent to make any psychological assessments and, much less, write such a report," he said.
He also said he was never connected with the Ateneo Psychology Department. “The date of the report, 1996, would indicate, as people in the Ateneo know, that my assignment then was principal of the Ateneo de Manila High School."
Ateneo likewise denied conducting a psychiatric test on Aquino.
“The Psychology Department would like to correct this fallacious information. The document is false; no faculty member or other professional affiliated with the Psychology Department has ever conducted a psychiatric assessment of Senator Benigno Aquino III," it said in a statement.
Caluag said his signature in the spurious report was probably lifted from any of the letters he wrote to Ateneo de Manila alumni from 2000-2005 to greet them on their birthdays.
“I personally signed each letter, since I did add a personal note to alumni I knew personally. As such, this signature would be very accessible to someone who would think of forging my signature by attaching it to a document and circulating it electronically .
Aquino predicted that the next wave of emails against him may involve documents supposedly from Boston Hospital showing that he has psychiatric history there.
“I never entered any hospital in Massachusetts not only in Boston. I only entered a dental clinic to have my teeth fixed, in the course of two years and three months stay in Boston when we were in exile," he said. - KBK, GMANews.TV

Wade says he's undecided about World Championships Chris Mannix, SI.com
MIAMI -- LeBron James says he probably won't slip into a USA Basketball jersey when the U.S. travels to Turkey for the World Championships this summer. Kobe Bryant says that, if healthy, he probably will. Dwyane Wade? He's still not sure. Wade told SI.com on Thursday that he was still wrestling with the possibility of playing for Team USA.
"I'm undecided," said Wade. "There's no question about it."
USA Basketball has been on the tip of everyone's tongue recently after USA hoops czar Jerry Colangelo announced that anyone who skips the world championships without a good reason could lose their spot on the U.S. roster at the 2012 Olympics. Those words have been met by a stiff blowback from players, particularly James, who told reporters that he did not respect Colangelo's statement. Like James, Wade is eligible to be a free agent this summer and says he would like to leave the door open to keep playing. But, Wade says, issues in his personal life will come first.
"I think [Colangelo] understands our loyalty to USA Basketball," said Wade. "We've been playing since 2004. If guys have personal things going on but still want to play [in 2012], I think they should be accepted."
"I have a lot of personal things going on this summer. I would love to compete but I might not be able to because of the personal things in my life. It's no secret that I'm going through a divorce. I have to take care of that. My kids come first. I've given a lot of time to USA Basketball and I think they understand my dedication to it, but the Wade family comes first."
Wade believes that despite the recent publicity over players pulling out, the core group from the 2008 games will all be in London in 2012.
"At the end of the day, we will all be on the same page," said Wade. "Comments are coming from everywhere. No one knows exactly what has been said. There are a lot of things said but we'll get it together when the time comes."

P106-M PLUNDER CASE FILED VS BISTEK
A plunder case involving more than P106 million worth of public funds allegedly used on questionable food purchases was filed this morning against Quezon City vice mayor Herbert Bautista before the Office of the Ombudsman.
Complainant Nicanor Royo Salameda of Payatas, Quezon City is asking the Ombudsman to have Bautista answerable to said misuse of millions of government funds that should have been allocated for poverty-alleviation programs.
Included in the complaint was Quezon City Administrative Officer V Ligaya A. Montallana who, according to Salameda, conspired with the former comedian in making the questionable transactions.
"So many lives of poor individuals like me could have been saved from poverty and death if the said millions of funds were used to improve our plight. But what did Bautista do with the more than P106 million fund of his office?," Salameda said.

Is Jordan's off-court history a risk to Bobcats? 07:54 AM ET 04.10 | Michael Jordan became owner of the Charlotte Bobcats so fast no one even wondered if the NBA had any doubts. How could the league really? The sport's best player was offering to take one of the league's least profitable franchises, put his face on it and turn it into a marketing juggernaut -- or at least not a perennial disappointment . But Jordan's past raises some questions, especially his history of gambling. Of course, the NBA has owners who are literally casino owners, but perhaps this case is different. Here, the question is: how far did the NBA go in vetting Jordan, and was it far enough? Cleveland Plain Dealer

Sabi niya, “Chiz and his people are still in my team; specifically my team. Not LP, not coalition but my team. The important thing is they’re still my team.”

Too Many Nipple Slips… First it’s Anne Curtis. Now, it’s Karyll. First it’s Anne Curtis. Now, it’s Karyll. Seems it wasn’t only Anne who figured in a wardrobe malfunction incident during the “ASAP XV” Boracay taping a month ago. Now, netizens are feasting on another controversial photo this time involving Karylle. The photo that surfaced in cyberspace captured the singer whose bra top appears to have slipped. She was doing a production number in the shot with Yeng Constantino and Vina Morales. The photo surfaced in another entertainment website on April 8. “TV Patrol” segment host Marie Lozano says it wasn’t a nip slip but a wardrobe malfunction. “Two reliable sources tell me Karylle was wearing a nipple tape during her wardrobe malfunction in ASAP XV in Boracay. Nothing to see guys!” Lozano first tweeted April 8. Then, hours later, she posted another tweet message assuring everyone that it wasn’t what it appears to be. “There was a wardrobe malfunction but not much was exposed coz karylle was wearing a nipple tape. Technically, no nip slip!” In the same "ASAP XV" taped episode, Anne’s bra top slipped which caused her left boob to be exposed. Her "Babe I Love You" leading man Sam Milby was quick to cover her from behind. The taping was halted as Anne was crying profusely after the incident. People in the production pleaded to the audience to erase any photo or video which captured Anne’s nip slip. Some followed but others didn’t. A few days later, Anne’s nip slip videos and photos made it to cyberspace. Alarmed, Anne’s management Viva Artist Agency through its head Veronique del Rosario-Corpus issued a statement pleading the public to stop posting pictures and videos of their talent in that uncompromising situation. A lot of Anne’s fans posted messages of support for the actress in their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Anne’s leading man and ex-boyfriend Sam Milby defended the actress from insinuations that it was done intentionally to create noise for their movie “Babe I Love You.” "It was an accident at hindi naman sinadya. I mean, some people said it's for promotion or whatever. I mean, why do we need to expose her for promotion? Sobrang disrespectful and for tabloid to have it on a front cover...That was really disrespectful," Sam said almost angrily. Anne’s camp sought legal opinion from their lawyers but they eventually decided not to file a case against the tabloid that first published Anne's controversial photo.
