Piolo the producer

MANILA, Philippines—Although he is grateful for the success of his mainstream movies, drama actor Piolo Pascual insists that he is more than ready to tackle roles that don’t necessarily stick to his matinee idol persona.

“Most of my movies are commercial,” he admits in an exclusive interview with Inquirer Entertainment. “They follow a certain formula: romantic, feel-good, happy ending.”

When he read the script of Raya Martin and Adolf Alix’s independent film “Manila” — a twin bill inspired by Lino Brocka’s “Jaguar” and Ishmael Bernal’s “Manila By Night” — Piolo was immediately “excited.”

“It was dark,” he quips. “It’s something the audience won’t expect of me.”

But he’s certain that his fans also want to see him in different kinds of roles. For “Manila,” he is playing a druggie rocker and a slum-dwelling bodyguard.

He wasn’t even afraid of being unrecognizable—sporting dark skin and looking deglamorized in the two episodes.

Updated classics

“I want to offer something new to viewers. It’s one way of uplifting and educating them as well,” he explains. “A lot of people from my generation didn’t get to see Brocka and Bernal films. With this movie, we are giving them the chance to see updated versions of classics.”

That was how he convinced his handlers in Star Magic to allow him to do “Manila” — his third indie project after the short film “Kagat ng Dilim” and the feature “Chopsuey.”

“I told my management company that this movie is important to me … I believe in it,” he asserts.

He has so much faith in the project that he also signed up as one of its producers — a first for him.

“It’s risky. You need to be careful in executing it, especially since we are re-telling classic movies,” he notes. “But I’m confident because everyone in this team is passionate … and they are not doing it to make money.”

He says that he is learning a lot on the set.

“I’m very much involved in it,” he relates. “I learned that each day is important and that it costs a lot to pack up a shooting.”

On his first day in the slums of Baseco, he recounts, “I was exhausted. I hardly slept and came straight from a taping of [the ABS-CBN soap] ‘Lobo.’ But I didn’t want to cancel the shoot because it would be very expensive [to do so].”

It’s tiring, he concedes, “but all worth it because we are doing something worthwhile.”

Piolo and his co-producers in Bicycle Pictures and MJM Productions hope to “market the film abroad and enter it in international festivals.”

“When I attended the Paris Cinema festival [last month], I realized that even though we’re a third world country, we can compete with the best movies from abroad,” he says.

Although he’s gone indie, he’s not completely turning his back on mainstream cinema.

He’s currently shooting a new romantic flick with Angel Locsin, tentatively titled “Australia,” produced by Star Cinema and directed by Rory Quintos.

Needless to say, he’s devoting just as much time and energy to this mainstream project. “Before going to my ‘Manila’ shoots, I take horse-back riding lessons in the morning. It’s rigorous … a crash course because I have to look convincing as a cowboy.”

Panliligaw ni Piolo, ine-entertain na ni Ruffa Gutierrez?!
Written by Chit Ramos

You read it right, isang pelikula ito na kukunan pa sa Australia, ang Land of the Kangaroos.

There must be something in Papa Piolo para mag-text back ang mailap na ex-wife.

Looks like Piolo, smells like Piolo, too

MANILA, Philippines—Piolo Pascual and Bench. Can it get any better?

You heard that right. Philippine entertainment’s demigod, Piolo Pascual, and global retail brand, Bench, have worked together to release Piolo’s scent, Pure Passion, simultaneously with his own clothing line, It Just Gets Better.

One of Philippine entertainment’s royals, Piolo Pascual is the epitome of the ideal bachelor, effortlessly exuding appeal and masculinity.

Piolo’s passion is evident in his many involvements. He is currently filming and co-producing a “double-feature” independent film called “Manila: Day and Night,” a tribute to Ishmael Bernal’s “Manila by Night” and Lino Brocka’s “Jaguar.”

As for his perfume, the actor said the scent is “attractive” because of its smell and its price. (Price per bottle is indeed irresistible at P398.)

Not stopping on making everyone smell like him, Piolo has also tried to make all the men look like him (how women could only wish!) with his own It Just Gets Better line under Bench.

I recently had the pleasure to sit down with this do-it-all hunk to talk about his newest foray. And if I may add, I tried hard not to look too mesmerized by his heavenly eyes.

What is your ultimate passion in life?
As you may notice, I am very passionate about everything I do from acting to producing films. I’d want to do as much as I can while I’m young but I never compromise on quality.

What exactly is Pure Passion cologne all about?
It’s the scent of passion. It’s the scent of wanting and going for your dreams. I would say it’s me placed in a perfume bottle.

Who came up with the name Pure Passion? Why was that particular name chosen for the newest cologne?
We were brainstorming for a name and it just came up. I thought it was perfect for how we envisioned the cologne, me, and the people who use it.

Who is the primary target market of Pure Passion cologne?
We are targeting people who want to smell good. Which is pretty much everyone, and with such an attractive price, who wouldn’t want to pick this up?

As the face of the Pure Passion cologne, how do you think are you connected with the merchandise and why are you the perfect endorser?
This is my scent. I picked it out specifically so I could share it with people who share the same passion and appreciation for getting more out of life.

How does Pure Passion cologne differ from any other cologne?
Pure Passion cologne has that perfect balance between musk and fruit scents. Pure Passion is the perfect scent for me.

Who is the primary market of It Just Gets Better clothing line?
Primarily, those who like me, seek comfort from the clothes that they wear without compromising style.

How does this newest clothing line from Bench differ (in design and quality) from other lines of clothing?
Well, I designed the clothes. I had my hand on the line’s cut, colors, prints, and pretty much everything.

How does wearing a garment from It Just Gets Better clothing line bring about an unforgettable, sensual experience to its user?
It’s stylish so it gives you that confidence boost when you know you look good. And with comfort uncompromised, you can do everything.

Why do you, personally, wear clothes from It Just Gets Better clothing line? How does it make you feel?
All clothes on It Just Gets Better had my approval. It’s inspired by my own clothes, and by how I dress up everyday.

Why the name It Just Gets Better?
It is inspired by how I see that life always gets better. It’s my outlook in life, It Just Gets Better.

Clearly, Piolo Pascual has reached another milestone beyond the boundaries of the entertainment world. He has proven himself worthy of all his accomplishment s on television, in film and in music. And now, he has made another conquest through his newest personal cologne and clothing line, both of which are certainly successful as his name.

Uncover Piolo’s passion as Bench launches its newest clothing line and scent on Aug. 16, 6 p.m., at the SM Mall of Asia’s Music Hall.

To gain free entrance, bring a box of his Pure Passion cologne or wear any item from his It Just Gets Better collection available at Bench outlets nationwide.
