arts/artist management 101
by Ramon Bayron"mall tour audience proves: angel and piolo pa rin!"
happy new year to all angel locsin fans!
sinadya kong mag-"silent mode" these past few weeks because, among other things, i am conducting a self-imposed monitoring on the LMA promo. i decided early on to keep silent if and when said monitoring would indicate to me less than welcome readings.
now, with barely five days shy of the movie's regular run, i'm personally happy to have something strongly positive to tell the fans of ms. angel locsin.
dec. 10, 4:00 pm today, i found myself in the sm mall of asia for one specific purpose alone. i wanted to see for myself the kind of audience and reception angel locsin, piolo pascual and LMA in general would get.
as an arts promo professional, sm mall of asia is an important indicator because its unique positioning as a hub of practically all sectors in society. in short, mayaman, mahirap, jologs, sosyal, ofw, jobless, bata, matanda, teen-agers- lahat nagpupunta rito. para itong pinagsamang greenbelt 5 mall at sm north edsa mall kung spectrum of foot traffic ang pag-uusapan.
anyone who has been to SM MOA knows how gigantic this mall is. once inside the main building, i had to ask one of the security personnels exactly where would the mall show for that day be held.
"lumipat po kayo ng kabilang building." it turns out, nasa extreme left ng MOA ang location ng mall show, separated from the main building. think of an annex. kung di ka matiyaga, tatamarin kang hanapin pa ang location sa lawak ng mall.
but when i got there i understood why the show had to be staged outside the main mall itself. The "Love Me Again" stage was set up in what MOA calls its "Music Hall."
finally, the time came for the two leads to grace the stage.
para sa isang mall show, iisipin mong exaggerated ang sinabi ng host. but for that single occassion, hindi hype ang statement na ito. umabot ng libo ang crowd in my personal assessment. by how many, that i'm not sure kasi nga for one thing, ngayon lang ako nakakita ng ganuong karaming tao for a mall show
ito rin ang sinabi ni piolo after the song. "wow. maraming beses na akong nag-mall show pero ngayon lang ako nakakita ng ganito karaming tao. sana po, manood kayong lahat ng 'love me again.'
silently, naisip ko baka anti-climactic na tinawag at pinakanta na si piolo (sa youtube video ng US premiere, we saw na nagsalita muna sina angel at sam before piolo came out). but i'm happy to note that i was wrong. i thought the screams couldn't get any louder but when piolo announced: "please welcome, ms angel locsin!", mas makabibinging hiyawan at tilian ang dumagundong sa buong hall.
di na nagpapigil ang mga tao. "nag-ober the bakod" na sa nakaharang na steel partition. wala nang security personnel na makasaway simply because nasa stage na silang lahat.
early in the promo stage of the movie, ang worry ko is that parang kulang na sa "kilig" ang tandem nilang dalawa because of factors i won't mention but i'm quite sure active fans would know.
but whatever was lacking, that mall show in MOA gave back a hundred times over. all angel and piolo had to do was stay close together on stage, sing the theme song and the crowd soaked in that magical high and thrill successful love teams are known to do to their fans.
in my opinion. LMA can be compared nearer to AVSL than say OTL or FTFT in terms of "pre-showing expectation" and handling. but i dare say that i'm now convinced na manggugulat ang pelikulang ito in terms of box-office performance. i'm saying that piolo pascual's position as abs-cbn's #1 leading man will be maintained after the results of this movie has been tallied. and finally, i'm saying that in the end, "love me again" will prove to everyone that angel locsion is still, despite everthing she's gone through and despite the determined efforts of those who prefer to see her fall than soar, on top of her league.
