GMA profits up 10.4%; ABS-CBN down by 21%
By Jenniffer B. Austria
BITTER rivals in the television wars yesterday reported contrasting financial results for the first quarter, with GMA Network showing a 10.4-percent rise in net income and ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. reporting a 21-percent drop in profits.
GMA Network said net income came to P501 million, up from P454 million in the same period last year, as it benefited from higher airtime and subscription revenues.
Airtime revenues from television and radio rose 1 percent to P2.41 billion from P2.39 billion last year as the networks’ advertising minutes climbed 5.1 percent in the first three months.
Subscription revenues from international operations jumped 38 percent to P223 million from P169 million.
By the end of March, GMA Pinoy TV had 210,000 subscribers while GMA Life TV, its second international channel, had over 112,000 subscribers, the network reported.
In a briefing, GMA chairman and chief executive Felipe Gozon said the company was likely to sustain its performance in the coming quarters following a recent increase in its advertising rates and the high ratings of its television programs.
In the first 13 days of May, the company had already registered P934 million in revenue, Gozon said, and it that it was likely to hit P1 billion monthly in the remaining months of this year.
He said GMA Network expected its net income to reach P2.8 billion this year, or 18.6 percent higher than the P2.36 billion it earned in 2008.
The Lopez-owned ABS-CBN reported a 21-percent decline in first quarter profits, which dipped to P191 million from P242 million last year.
Chief finance officer Ronaldo Valdueza said the company’s cable business, Skycable, continued to be a drag on its bottom line.
Skycable posted a lower net income in the first quarter because the company was expanding and only recently launched Sky Select and Sky Broadband, Valdueza said.
ABS-CBN’s consolidated revenues grew 24 percent to P5.29 billion as a decline in airtime revenues was offset by the P878-million revenue contribution of SkyCable.
Airtime revenue declined 2 percent to P2.76 billion as the advertising minutes on Channel 2 dropped by as much as 20 percent.
Valdueza said he expected airtime revenue to improve in the coming months as consumer spending started to improve.
