TV5 STARTS BIG TIME CONQUEST


WE had a great time at the Philippine Advertising Congress held at the Subic Convention Center. Last Friday, the lunch for the 2,500 delegates was sponsored by TV 5 and they gave away P1 million plus in cash prizes for special editions of "Talentadong Pinoy" hosted by Ryan Agoncillo and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" hosted by Vic Sotto. Both Ryan and Vic easily won the crowd, and so did Paolo Bediones, Tuesday Vargas and Bayani Agbayani who stood as the panel of commentators. The top winners in the singing contest were Pat Mendoza and Gen de la Paz of Starcom Mediavest who did a duet of Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy.” Runners up were Cyril and Harris of Alchemy and Johanna Bongolan of A Quality.

But the highlight of the affair is new TV5 Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan talking about his plans for the network in a video presentation. TV5 is now powered by MediaQuest, the investee company of PLDT's Beneficial Trust Fund that first launched mobile TV in the country with MyTV, as well as PLDT's Watchpad and Smart's Sandbox. It also owns Cignal, the first digital direct to home satellite service with high definition nationwide. The TV5 team is now headed by Ray Espinosa as president-CEO, and Roberto V. Barreiro as EVP and COO. "This is a long term investment for us," says MVP. "One that will benefit a lot of people, from those behind the cameras to those in front of them, and ultimately, the Filipino viewers whether they're watching on TV, their computers or their mobiles phones or on any other device. From here in the Philippines or anywhere in the world, we will reach them and they can reach us."

TV5 will use high-def production equipment, tapeless digital system, and improve their transmission through more powerful transmitters nationwide. They will beef up their news department five times bigger than it is now, and not only come out with new shows but also develop their own talents. Also, they plan to put up their own film division. "For many countries like the Philippines, movies have become part of local culture," adds MVP. "We want to do our part in reinvigorating the local film industry and we plan to produce more movies than the combined output of the two leading networks now."

MVP and TV 5 will definitely shake up the local TV and movie industry if all his plans would come into fruition next year.

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—For the past few weeks, there have been rumors that TV5, under new management led by Manny V. Pangilinan’s MediaQuest, has been offering stars (and several TV executives) lucrative deals to help the fledgling network move up in the ratings game.

Bobby Barreiro, TV5 executive vice president and chief operating officer, said he had heard talks about rival channels conducting “loyalty checks.”

“This only means the competition is now taking us seriously, especially since we are now part of a bigger family,” Barreiro told Inquirer Entertainment during 
TV5’s media event at the 21st Advertising Congress on Friday.

The biggest buzz is that Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, with fellow “Eat Bulaga” host Ryan Agoncillo, will move to TV5. (Sotto, De Leon and Agoncillo host shows for TV5: “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” for Sotto; “Wow Mali” for De Leon; and “Talentadong Pinoy” for Agoncillo.)

There’s even talk that noontime top-rater “Eat Bulaga” is being lured away from GMA 7 by TV5.

GMA’s contract with “Eat Bulaga” producer, Tape Inc., ends next month but has just been renewed for three more years starting 2010.

Barreiro denies the rumor: “Even though some of their stars are doing shows with us … it doesn’t necessarily follow that the entire show is moving to our channel.”

The presence of Sotto and Agoncillo in TV5’s event at the Subic Bay Convention Center further fueled speculations. Though it’s a weekday, the two excused themselves from “Eat Bulaga” to join the TV5 team at the congress.

De Leon was supposed to join them, but had to stay in Manila for the noontime program, related Agoncillo.

“It was important for Vic and Ryan to be there because they host our flagship shows,” Barreiro explained.

Another for Ryan

Still, there is no truth to the rumor that Agoncillo was pressured to sign an exclusive deal with ABS-CBN and quit from “Eat Bulaga” and “Talentadong Pinoy,” according to Agoncillo and his manager Noel Ferrer.

“It’s also not true that ‘George and Cecil’ was axed because Ryan joined ‘Eat Bulaga,’” said Ferrer. “In fact, it had already been extended to its third season. ABS-CBN is also planning a game show for him.”

It may not be accurate, but talk of “loyalty checks” and “undue pressure on talents” gives Barreiro pause. “I hope it’s not true. These stars just want to make a living. We are just creating more jobs… and more options for viewers. I hope the stars will not be caught in a bind because of the network war.”

But is Bossing Vic jumping over to TV5?

Barreiro insisted: “We love Vic. He’s a good guy. We enjoy working with him and we are trying to nurture this relationship. We are thinking of other shows for him and we value his input. In any case, he’s not under exclusive contract with GMA 7.”

Own roster

Barreiro related that one of the new management’s priorities is to build its own stable of stars so that it will not be dependent on the talent pool of other channels.

“Having our own artist center is necessary,” he said. “We’ve started doing that with the discoveries from ‘Talentado.’ They are very much in demand. The Far East Acrobats were a big hit here at the Ad Congress.”

SUBIC BAY FREE PORT—Salim family-backed businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan bared the teeth of his burgeoning media empire, saying they are “challenging the duopoly of the giant TV stations in Philippine television” as he announced their plan for ABC TV5 broadcast network, which he bought for P4 billion or roughly $85.1 million. By “duopoly,” he was referring to ABS-CBN and GMA-7.

“This is a long-term investment for us. One that we know will benefit a lot of people, from those behind the cameras to those in front of them,” said Pangilinan at the lunch his company sponsored at the 21st Philippine Advertising Congress here last week.

Pangilinan, chairman of ABC Development Corp., also said in a statement prepared by his firm that, “TV5 will shake the media landscape further in the coming months with. . .expansion plans that will take it into multiple platforms and even into movies,” apparently this means the company will produce movies because it is an “important part of local culture.”  

“We want to do our part in reinvigorating the movie industry. That’s why we plan to produce more movies than the combined total of the two leading networks,” he added.

He said the company will “strengthen transmission” and invest in high-definition production equipment “with a completely tapeless, digital workflow” and expand its news and current affairs division by five times of what it is now.

The company will be headed by president and chief executive officer Ray Espinosa, vice chairman of PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund, which used Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) subsdiary MediaQuest Holdings Inc. to buy TV5.

Former GMA Network Inc. executive Bobby Barreiro was named executive vice-president and chief operating officer. MediaQuest, the PLDT group’s vehicle for media-related investments, will manage TV5.

The company holds a 30-percent stake in BusinessWorld Publishing Corp., 51 percent in Nation Broadcasting Corp., and 33.5 percent in SkyCable Corp. 
It also acquired in July 2007 licensed direct-to-home television operator GV Broadcasting Systems Inc., its name later changed to MediaScape Inc.

MediaQuest also provides content to PLDT’s Watchpad and Smart Communications Inc.’s Sandbox media platforms.

“Now that it is part of this big organization, TV5 will play a vital role in providing content across all media platforms and help spawn groundbreaking possibilities for the growing multimedia group,” said Pangilinan.

Notably, Pangilinan didn’t refer to The Philippine Star, a newspaper owned by the Belmonte family that in June he said PLDT plans to buy.

What’s under Manny Pangilinan’s belt?

If we are going to compare the TV5 business strategy presented by Chair Manny Pangilinan at the Philippine Advertising Congress at the Subic Convention Center, it is very similar to that of ABS-CBN, even GMA 7. Manny finally realizes his dream of owning a television network. His advantage in financial resources he lacks in a precious Network commodity – time – which his main competitors have made headways.

Manny laid out the following plan:

Use high-def production equipment, tapeless digital system, and improve their transmission through more powerful transmitters nationwide.

Beef up their news department five times bigger than it is now, and not only come out with new shows.

Develop their own talents.

Put up their own film division and produce more movies than the combined output of the two leading networks now.

Let’s see first his first weekday primetime program and his first blockbuster full-length feature, then we’ll know if he and his team know what they’re boing beyond financial wizardry that’s the mark of Manny P.

To be successful, Manny P. has to control the wild beast known as showbiz! What’s under his business belt that he has not shown?

Movies next for TV5

Subic , Philippines  — TV5 will join a bigger ballgame in the first half of 2010. The network will start producing movies at “more than the combined output of the two leading networks,” as newly-installed EVP and COO Roberto “Bobby” Barreiro put it.
“It will be a big change,” he goes on. “We used to look at things from a television perspective alone. All of a sudden, our world just expanded. It’s very nice to be part of a big family. All of us are really excited.”
Barreiro was among the network’s executives present at the recently-concluded advertising congress, where TV5 gave away more than P1-M cash in prize money to representative s of advertising agencies who joined Talentadong Pinoy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire just for the day.
Pat Mendoza and Gen dela Peña (Starcom Mediavest) won P50,000 for placing first in Talentadong Pinoy, while Cyril Cabornay and Harris Guevarra (Alchemy Advertising) and Johanna Bongolan (A Quality Advertising) went home P20,000 and P10,000 richer for placing second and third, respectively.
Vic Sotto, host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, asked contestants Joseph Ranstedt Collado of Straight Shooters Media Inc. and Paulo Ocampo of Fonterra a series of questions about the network and its plans (each won P500,000 for giving the right answers).
Thus, the thousands of delegates found out that TV5 has linked with MediaQuest, the first to launch mobile TV in the country via MyTV and owner of Cignal, the first digital direct-to-home satellite service.
The day will come when we can watch Talentadong Pinoy and other TV5 shows on mobile phones , computers, and other gadgets.
An audio-visual presentation had more good news for the delegates. The station’s news and public affairs department is up for expansion next year. Very timely, now that elections are just around the corner.
It also means more jobs, more opportunities.
Chair Manny Pangilinan summed it all up: “This is as long-term investment for us. One that we know will benefit a lot of people, from those behind the cameras to those in front of them. And ultimately, the Filipino audience, whether they’re watching on television, on their computers, on their mobile phones or any other device. From here in the Philippines or anywhere in the world, we will reach them and they can reach us.”
It is, as the TV5 slogan says, time to shake television. And shake it they will, not only on TV, but via computers, mobile phones, and other technology the ever-growing Pinoy audience will adopt.

PINAG-UUSAPAN ang paglipat ni Claudine Barretto sa GMA 7, pero ayon sa kampo ng aktres, hindi kailangang maging malaking isyu ang tungkol doon.
Mas dapat daw pag-usapan na ngayon ay magkasama na sa iisang istasyon si Claudine at ang mister niyang si Raymart Santiago.
Noong una ay marami ang nag-akalang si Raymart ang lilipat sa ABS-CBN dahil madalas niyang samahan sa kabilang network ang mi¬sis niya, pero si Claudine ang lumipat sa Kapuso network.
Kung may mga taga-Dos na lumipat sa Siyete, may ibang mga taga-ABS-CBN at GMA 7 ang nakatakdang lumipat sa TV5 na ngayon ay pag-aari na ni Manny Pangilinan. Ilang mga artista ng Dos at Siyete ang nakipag-meeting sa TV network ni Manny.

Nakalulungkot ang posibleng pagkawala ng isang magaling na male TV host sa isang major net­work dahil very tempting ang offer ng TV5 sa kanya. Itatago natin sa pangalang Lebrab ang TV host (kilala siya ng viewers ng network) na bukod sa regular shows na ibibigay, he’s also offered a corporate position na never in-offer sa kanya ng network kung saan siya matagal nagtrabaho.

Bibigyan din ang TV host ng endorsement worth P1 million at agad ibibigay sa kanya ‘pag pumirma na siya ng kontrata sa TV5. Pinag-iisipan ito ng husto ng TV host at isa sa mga pumipigil sa kanyang tanggapin ay ang pagiging loyal sa network na nag-discover at nagbigay ng first TV break sa kanya.

May mga kinukonsultang tao ang TV host kung tatanggapin ba ang offer ng TV5 o mas pipiliin ang maging loyal, pero balita namin, magka-counter offer ang home network niya at nasa TV host na ang desisyon.

Kapag nagdesisyon siyang lumipat sa TV5, i-a-announce raw ang pagiging part niya ng network sa Christmas Party sa December 3. ‘Pag walang announcement na nangyari, ibig sabihin, mas pinili nito ang home network.

TV5 breaks boundaries; announces good news for 2010

SUBIC, Olongapo City – Breaking the duopoly of the two giant TV networks in the country, TV5 really did a good job since its launch (or reformatting) last year. Though already using their new branding “TV5 Shake Mo TV Mo” the corporate name remained Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC).

At the recent 21st Philippine Advertising Congress held in Subic, TV5 announced the good news that will challenge again all the other networks – their massive expansion plans and venturing into movies.

This grand surprise wowed thousands of delegates in the congress. In 2010, TV5 plans to expand its network coverage across the nation and enhance infrastructure and manpower, as well as investing in High-Definition production equipment with a completely tapeless, digital workflow – all to continue playing big in the industry.

Being powered by MediaQuest (the first to launch mobile television in the Philippines with MyTV), TV5 will play a vital role in providing best content across all media platforms and continuing innovations for the growing multimedia group.

Bobby V. Barreiro, EVP and Chief Operating Officer of TV5, said that the film industry in the country is dying that’s why they’ve been coming up with the role of providing content to the network’s entry into film production, which it plans to do in a big way, starting January next year.

“For many countries, like the Philippines, movies have become part of local culture. We want to do our part in reinvigorating the movie industry. That’s why we plan to produce more movies than the combined total of the two leading networks,” shared ABC Development Corporation Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan.

Completing the TV5 team is Ray C. Espinosa, President and Chief Executive Officer.
‘Talentado’ and ‘Millionaire’ Agency Edition

What surprised the delegates even more is TV5’s bringing live to them their top-rating shows “Talentadong Pinoy” and “Who Wants To Be A Millionare?” of course with their ever  handsome hosts Ryan Agoncillo and “Bossing” Vic Sotto, respectively.

Five contestants from the delegates joined the “Talentadong Pinoy” Agency Edition. Bayani Agbayani, Tuesday Vargas and Paolo Bediones acted as the talent scouts that afternoon. Tuesday and Bayani’s comic antics kept the audience laughing.

Meanwhile, jurors who served as scorers were from the entertainment press invited in by TV5: Maridol Bismark of Philippine Star, Bong Godinez of Pep.ph, Bayani San Diego of Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mario Bautista of Malaya/Manila Bulletin and this writer.

“Talentadong Pinoy” Agency Edition contestants who did their singing in different styles were Cyril Cabornay and Harris Guevarra (Alchemy Advertising), Johanna Bongolan (A Quality Advertising), Pat Mendoza and Gen Dela Pena (Starcom Mediavest), Raul Godinez (Mindshare), and Desiree Nartates (A Quality Advertising). Pat Mendoza and Gen Dela Pena emerged as first place and got P50,000; Cyril Cabornay and Harris Guevarra, second place, got P20,000; and Johanna Bongolan, third place, got P10,000. The other two got a consolation prize of P5,000 each.

With “Who Wants To Be A Millionare?” two contestants who won P500,000 each were Joseph Ranstedt Collado (Straight Shooters Media Inc.) and Paulo Ocampo (Fonterra). Bossing Vic asked questions involving TV5’s shows, amazing personalities and the management under TV5.
 
“This is a long-term investment for us. One that we know will benefit a lot of people, from those behind the cameras to those in front of them. And ultimately, the Filipino audience, whether they’re watching on television, on their computers, on their mobile phones or on any other device,” Pangilinan vowed of TV5’s addressable advertising and most of all, its best content for everyone, everywhere, and every time.

“Si Pia lang ang inaaswang ko!” -- Vic Sotto




Puro magagandang babae ang nakapaligid kay Vic Sotto sa pelikulang Ang Darling Kong Aswang.

Nandiyan ang seksing-seksi at super-kinis na si Cristine Reyes, at kasama pa sina Jean Garcia, Agot Isidro, Denise Laurel, Empress Shuck at Jac¬kie Rice.

Sabi ni Vic, lahat ng mga babae sa tabi niya ay kaaswang-aswang. Pero, ni isa raw sa kanila ay wala siyang inaswang.

“Isa lang naman ang inaaswang ko. Si Pia Guanio lang ang inaaswang ko!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” masayang sabi ni Vic.

Anyway, habang tumatagal ay lalong tumatatag ang relasyon nina Vic at Pia. Katunayan, sobrang saya raw nila nu’ng nagbakasyon sila sa Africa kamakailan.

“Kung mauulit `yon, uulitin ko pa `yon!” say ni Vic.

“Puro kahayupan doon! Walang aswang doon! Dito lang sa atin may aswang!” pabirong hi¬rit pa ni Vic.

“Makikita mo ang kagandahan ng mga hayop sa ating mundong ginagalawan na dapat nating respetuhin at alagaan. Kasi marami sa atin na kahayupan, puro kahayupan lang na… Ibig kong sabihin, maraming instinct na… Kapag hindi tayo gumalaw, ba¬lang araw tayo–tayo lang ang maghahayupan sa isa’t-isa,” dugtong pa niya.

Inusisa namin si Vic tungkol sa kuwento na umuungot na raw ng apo ang tatay ni Pia. Kumbaga, gusto na nitong mabuntis ang anak.

“Ay, walang nababanggit na ganyan! Wala naman. Tatlo na ang apo ng tatay ni Pia. Wala pa! Aso puwede pa.

“Darating din ‘yon,” sambit ni Vic.

Inusisa rin namin kay Vic ang diumano ay karamdaman ngayon ni Dina Bonnevie. Gulat na gulat siya sa kuwentong ito.

“Sorry, hindi ko nabalitaan ‘yon.? Siguro, hindi ganun kaseryoso para umabot sa akin.?I’m sure, malalaman ko `yon at ibabalita sa akin ‘yon ng mga anak namin, sina Danica o Oyo. Pero, walang nagbalita sa akin,” pahayag ni Vic.

Ngayong Pasko, gugugulin ni Vic ang oras niya sa kanyang mga anak at apo mula sa kanyang panganay na si Danica at sa asawa nitong si Mark Pingris.

Pag-amin ni Vic, cool daw ang maging lolo.

“Okey, dahil naglalakad na siya. Marami na siyang nasasabing salita.?Natatawag na niya ako na… ‘Tatay… Taba’!

“Parati kasi niyang nakikita ang commercial ko (Tide) kaya ‘yun ang nasasabi niya. Kapag sinabi niyang tatay, ang kasunod agad noon ay taba! Tatay-Taba!

“One year and four months na siya, pero mukhang two years old na siya kasi malaki. Mana kasi sa tatay niya,” masayang kuwento ni Vic.

Pagdating naman kay Oyo, nakikita raw niya na masaya ito sa piling ni Kristine Hermosa.

“They’re doing okey. They’re doing good. Kung ano ‘yung personal nilang plano, wala pa naman akong alam. Pero I’m sure, ipapaalam nila sa akin ‘yon. But every¬thing is going great for the two. Okey naman sila.

“Si Oyo busy siya sa Midnight DJ (TV5) and fortunately, it’s doing good.?Tuwang-tuwa naman ‘yung mga taga-TV5.”

Ibinalita rin ni Vic na magkakaroon siya ng bagong show, pero hindi na raw sa GMA 7 kundi sa TV5.

“Inaayos na namin. Hinihintay lang namin ‘yung ano… For a while, parang nagkaroon sila ng parang pagpapalit ng management. Now, nasa paga-ari na ni MVP, ni Mr. Manny Pangilinan.

“So, I think the next few years, the station will be somewhere up there. Marami silang plano, magaganda kahit pelikula gusto nilang pasukin.

“Hopefully, first quarter nakahanda na for production, for a shoot. May inaayos lang kaming detalye, pero tuloy na ‘yon,” patuloy na kuwento pa rin ni Vic.

Siyanga pala, magkasabay na ipalalabas ang Ang Darling Kong Aswang at Nobody, Nobody but Juan ni Dolphy, kasama si Willie Revillame.

Nakarating kay Vic ang sinabi ni Dolphy na nahihiya siya kay Vic dahil magkakatapat ang pelikula nila, at kasama pa nito si Willie.

“Ay, wala sa amin ‘yon. Alam naman ni Dolphy na kahit sino ang maka-partner niya at sino ang maka-partner ko, magkasabay man ang pelikula namin, ‘yung pagkakaibigan namin ang mas mananaig.

“Meron nga kaming pinaplanong follow-up sa Dobol Trobol. Maybe next year,” saad na lang ni Vic.

SUBIC, Olongapo City – Breaking the duopoly of the two giant TV networks in the country, TV5 really did a good job since its launch (or reformatting) last year. Though already using their new branding “TV5 Shake Mo TV Mo” the corporate name remained Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC).
