Arenas charged with felony Angry Roll Eyes

Suspended Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas was charged with felony gun possession on Thursday in connection with a locker-room incident with a teammate last month.

Arenas was charged with one count of carrying an unlicensed pistol, which is punishable by up to five years in prison. The charges were filed in D.C. Superior Court.

Arenas brought four unloaded handguns into the Verizon Center last month, saying he wanted them out of reach from his children at his home. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement prohibits players from carrying firearms at league arenas.

On Dec. 21, he took the guns out of his locker in what he said was a "misguided effort to play a joke" on teammate Javaris Crittenton. The two reportedly were at odds over a gambling debt.

Arenas was suspended indefinitely without pay on Jan. 6, one day after he pretended to shoot his teammates during a pregame huddle in Philadelphia. NBA commissioner David Stern said the antics of the Wizards' leading scorer showed he "is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game."

Earlier Thursday, police executed a warrant to search for a gun in Crittenton's apartment in Virginia but reportedly did not seize anything. Crittenton's role in the locker-room incident remains unclear, though he said he did nothing wrong.

Arenas is averaging 22.6 points and 7.2 assists this season for Washington (12-25), which lost to the Hawks 94-82 on Wednesday in Atlanta. Arenas, 28, is making $16.2 million this season in the second year of a six-year, $111 million contract. Each missed game will cost Arenas about $147,000 in salary. According to the collective bargaining agreement, players suspended for more than 12 games can appeal the ban before an independent arbitrator.

Raptors' future relies on Bargnani Angry Cheesy

Andrea Bargnani is averaging 17.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and a team-leading 1.4 blocks in his fourth season.

Andrea Bargnani is no replacement for Chris Bosh. Instead, he is 7 feet of potential insurance that enables the Toronto Raptors to maintain hope should Bosh leave this summer as a free agent, if not next month in an unlikely midseason trade.

"The kid is taking strides in the right direction," Raptors president Bryan Colangelo said. "But he needs to get to the point where he's 20 [points] and 10 [rebounds]. That's the complete product. Now, is it going to be 23 and 8, 24 and 7, whatever? He's far from complete, but he's proven he belongs here."

Bargnani is averaging 17.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and a team-leading 1.4 blocks in his fourth season since Toronto made him the No. 1 pick in 2006. The best players from that draft include No. 6 pick Brandon Roy (a two-time All-Star for Portland), No. 21 Rajon Rondo (NBA champion with Boston in 2007-08 and a likely All-Star this year), No. 8 Rudy Gay (20.4 points per game for Memphis) and No. 2 LaMarcus Aldridge (averaging 15.9 points and 7.9 rebounds for Portland). Bargnani belongs among the latter players in that group, with an understanding that his stock may rise as his role escalates in the years ahead. Last summer, the Raptors extended Bargnani through 2014-15 with a five-year deal worth $50 million, nearly $15 million less than the Blazers' extension for Aldridge.

definitely OT but very timely so I am sharing with those who regularly visit   Angry

What happened to the talkers?  Angry

Before the Rockets played the Knicks a few weeks back, Houston forward Carl Landry warned his brother, New York forward Marcus Landry, that it was going to be a long night. "I know every move you do, and I'm going to stop it," Carl boasted. "I'm telling all my teammates your favorite go-to moves and countermoves."

Carl, however, didn't deliver this riff orally. He sent it via text message.

Such is the sorry state of trash talk in the NBA today. There was a time not all that long ago when the ability to spew verbal shrapnel was as much a part of a player's basketball repertoire as his dribbling ability or crossover skills. Stars talked smack. Scrubs talked smack. Fans talked smack. Even refs talked smack. Told he was having an off night, longtime official Earl Strom once responded to a player, "I guarantee that you've missed more shots tonight than I've missed calls."

Today? Sit courtside at an NBA game and you won't hear much more than the squeak of sneakers and the tweet of the whistles. Oh, the players still have plenty to say -- as any of, say, Kevin Durant's 107,000 Twitter followers can attest. Nor is it the case that the NBA has entered an era of modesty and civility, not so long as players are bringing guns into locker rooms and allegedly threatening to ventilate each other with bullets over gambling debts.

But for whatever reason, trash-talk has become the equivalent of a dance step that's fallen out of vogue. One player blames technology. "Everybody picks up on everything and stuff goes viral and gets blown out of proportion, so you're better off not making controversy." To prove his point, he then asks not to be quoted by name.

It's hard to trace the origins of trash-talk. But by the mid-1980s, NBA games featured more chatting than a class taught by a substitute teacher. In Boston, Larry Bird was seldom shy about self-aggrandizing. During one game against the Sonics, Bird scored over Xavier McDaniel with two seconds left. Bird then turned to McDaniel and deadpanned, "Damn! I didn't mean to leave any time left on the clock."

In Chicago, Michael Jordan, clenched his teeth behind his smile and often asserted his superiority. As Doug Collins, who coached Jordan both in Chicago and Washington, put it: "When you play Michel Jordan, you have to stand up to him physically, but you have to stand up to him mentally as well because he will torment you."

In Seattle, Gary Payton was in perpetual danger of suffering a sprained jaw and larynx, sometimes jabbering even as he drove to the basket. Payton was so verbally inclined that he even trashed his own teammates, referring, for instance, to Sonics center Ervin Johnson as "Tragic Johnson."

In L.A., Shaquille O'Neal's unique brand of trash talk -- Shaq smack? -- often questioned the masculinity of the subject. The Sacramento Kings were "the Sacramento Queens." Lawrence Frank became "Laura Frank," after the Nets' coach complained that O'Neal benefitted from too many calls. When Jerry Stackhouse attempted to intentionally foul Shaq, he responded, "My daughters tackle me harder when I come home. ... It actually felt pretty good to get hit like that. Thanks, Jerry."

The soliloquies of some players could skew a bit vulgar. In the course of talking trash, it isn't uncommon to question the virtue of an opponent's wife or sister or mother. The Timberwolves' Brian Cardinal tells a story that, early in his career, he blocked a shot by Shawn Kemp, then with the Portland Trail Blazers. On the trip down court, Kemp's woofing was so fierce that Cardinal began to blush. And just as "words lead to action" on the playground, trash-talk could sometimes escalate into violence.

But, on balance, it's easy to argue that trash is -- or was -- ultimately a force of good. Even when delivered with an edge, it was usually in good fun. Sometimes it doubled as a bit of psychological warfare, intended to sow seeds of doubt in the opponent's head. This could backfire, imbuing opponents with extra motivation. (You talked trash to Jordan at your own peril ... which many learned after the fact.) Whatever, it added another dimension to the sport.

Trash-talk also helped grease the wheels of the NBA's star machine. It was another way for players to express themselves and reveal personality and character. It's no coincidence that the most gifted players of the last generation were also some of most gifted talkers.

One contemporary figure who understands the code and virtue of trash-talk? Barack Obama. You might recall that during the early weeks of his presidency, Obama attended a Wizards game and rooted for his hometown team, the Bulls. A vocal instigator, Mike Rawls, began woofing at the President. Obama waved off secret service and dished it right back. The two men spent most of the game exchanging tracer fire.

"I just had to see how he was gonna take it," Rawls told The Washington Post. "Once I knew he was a big trash-talker, too, about them Bulls, that means the gloves came off. ... He was talking trash and I was talking trash. I couldn't believe he was that laid back and real. I loved it."

There are still a few notable practitioners in the NBA today. In a recent Sports Illustrated poll that asked players to select the biggest trash-talker, Kevin Garnett won in a landslide with 62 percent. But his monologues are less classic trash than a sort of spill-over from his overall intensity. Nate Robinson, who ranked fifth in the poll with 3 percent, is known to talk, though it's usually just his Napoleon complex kicking in.

Yet, we pine for a return to the day when Jordan would sink a shot and ask his man, "Doesn't your coach get mad when you don't play defense?" It was spontaneous, it was fun, it was revealing. And it wasn't issued with that 140-character limit in mind.

Wizards may void Arenas contract Angry

To escape paying Gilbert Arenas the rest of his clogging contract -- $80.2 million for four years after this season -- the Wizards may seek to void the deal, and do so by invoking the morals clause in the uniform player contract under the league's collective bargaining agreement. The Wizards have distanced themselves from Arenas since the handgun incident, removing his likeness from the Verizon Center and issuing terse statements that could be a precursor to an attempt to void the deal.

Kobe, LeBron, Dwight have NBA's hottest-selling jerseys Angry
By J.E. Skeets

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has retained the No. 1 spot on the NBA's most popular jerseys list, a ranking he has held since the start of the '08-09 season. The rankings are based on sales at the NBA Store in New York City and NBAStore.com since the start of the '09-10 season.

Kobe is on top (don't say it!), LeBron James'(notes) Cavs' thread is second, Magic man Dwight Howard(notes) is third, and checking in at number four, ahead of superstar Dwyane Wade(notes), is Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose(notes).

The biggest surprise, of course, is Rose, who climbed seven spots from his No. 11 ranking last year.

Matt Watson of NBA FanHouse wonders if Rose's jump can be credited to his virgin playoff performance; "the Bulls aren't even as good as they were last year, but fans likely remember how Rose helped force the Celtics to an epic seven-game, seven-overtime series."

I'm sure there's some truth to that, but I have a much simpler explanation: the Bulls' jerseys just look good. In fact, I'd argue that if Hornets guard Chris Paul(notes) played in Chicago's stylin' red-and-black — instead of this nightmare — he'd probably be top five material, too. The actual design of the jersey must play some small part. This is fashion, after all.

Here's a look at the Top 15:

    1. Kobe Bryant(notes), Lakers
    2. LeBron James, Cavaliers
    3. Dwight Howard, Magic
    4. Derrick Rose, Bulls
    5. Dwyane Wade, Heat
    6. Kevin Garnett(notes), Celtics
    7. Chris Paul, Hornets
    8. Paul Pierce(notes), Celtics
    9. Shaquille O'Neal(notes), Cavaliers
    10. Pau Gasol(notes), Lakers
    11. Carmelo Anthony(notes), Nuggets
    12. Steve Nash(notes), Suns
    13. David Lee(notes), Knicks
    14. Allen Iverson(notes), 76ers
    15. Kevin Durant(notes), Thunder

In related NBA cash news, the Lakers once again top the list of most popular NBA team merchandise. The Celtics hold on to the No. 2 spot for the second year in a row and the Cavaliers move up from No. 4 last season to No. 3.

Iverson voted in; Nash, Duncan get All-Star spots Angry

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK—Allen Iverson(notes) was voted to start in the All-Star game Thursday, while Steve Nash(notes) and Tim Duncan(notes) made late moves to claim starting spots for the Western Conference.

Nash passed the inactive Tracy McGrady(notes) as the second guard, while Duncan disappointed Dallas fans hoping to see Dirk Nowitzki(notes) start by rallying past the Mavericks forward.

LeBron James(notes) was the leading vote-getter for the Feb. 14 game at Cowboys Stadium, becoming the first player to earn at least 2.5 million votes three times. He will make his sixth All-Star appearance, all as a starter.

“The fans still love and see what I do every night and they appreciate it, and I appreciate them for electing me as an All-Star starter,” James said before the Cavaliers hosted the Los Angeles Lakers. “It’s still special.”

Joining James and Iverson as East starters were Miami guard Dwyane Wade(notes), Orlando center Dwight Howard(notes) and Boston forward Kevin Garnett(notes).

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant(notes) was picked in the West along with Phoenix center Amare Stoudemire and Denver forward Carmelo Anthony(notes).

Starters were decided by fan balloting at NBA arenas and electronically . The reserves will be chosen by votes by the head coaches in each conference and will be announced next Thursday.

The fans still love Iverson, even though he’s played only 19 games during the worst season of his career. He appeared on the West ballot since he began the season in Memphis, but he and the Grizzlies parted ways following only three games.

Iverson’s votes counted in the East since he rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers, his longtime team. He is averaging only 14.8 points with the 76ers, but will get a shot at earning a third All-Star game MVP award if he chooses to play.

Bothered by a sore knee, Iverson said he would consider his health before deciding whether to play in his 10th All-Star game.

A McGrady election would have been a bigger embarrassment for the NBA, since he has played sparingly in only six games for the Houston Rockets. The team gave him permission to leave the team and work out on his own while trying to find a trade, yet McGrady still was second among West guards when the most recent update was released on Jan. 7.

That sparked some criticisms of the voting process, but Nash and New Orleans’ Chris Paul(notes) both moved ahead of McGrady in the final days of voting.

Duncan’s late surge gives him a 12th All-Star appearance. Bryant, who claimed his third All-Star game MVP last year when he shared it with Shaquille O’Neal(notes) in Phoenix, also will be appearing for the 12th time.

Garnett’s selection was his 13th, trailing only O’Neal (15) among active players.

The NBA expects more than 80,000 fans, which would be the largest crowd ever to witness a live basketball game.

It’s a return to Dallas for Nash, who spent six seasons with the Mavericks before signing with the Suns in 2004. He and Stoudemire give Phoenix two starters in an All-Star game for only the second time, joining Charles Barkley and Dan Majerle in 1995.

AP Sports Writer Tom Withers in Cleveland contributed to this report.

EDITORYAL - 'Natulog sa pansitan'
(Pilipino Star Ngayon) Updated January 22, 2010

TAMA ang ginawa ni Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Dir. Gen.

Knicks selling hope of LeBron   Angry

In July, the Knicks will be flush with salary-cap space and chasing LeBron James. Optimism, apparently, is contagious. The Knicks have signed up more than 3,000 new full-season subscribers since last spring, a 10-year high for the franchise and the third-highest total in the league.

'Nice' Gasol irks Kobe Angry

Kobe Bryant scowled at Pau Gasol for a second consecutive game, this time a few minutes into the second quarter. Bryant was angry that Gasol didn't muscle away a couple of defenders after Bryant threw an entry pass to him down low. (A foul was called on Knicks guard Wilson Chandler after Bryant's pass was deflected, but Bryant cursed at Gasol and stuck out both his elbows, as if showing Gasol how to keep defenders at bay.) "Pau's too nice. He's too nice of a guy," Bryant said.

Crystal Ball: 10 Predictions for 2010 Angry
By Tom Perrotta

What’s in store for tennis fans in 2010? Here are 10 predictions (or wild guesses, whichever you prefer) for the New Year.

1. Roger Federer doesn’t win a major title. I don’t think Federer has added the last major to his resume (he has won 15, more than any man in history). The upcoming year, though, promises to be the most challenging of his career as the tour’s young stars (chiefly Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Murray) mature, and Federer’s long-time rival, Rafael Nadal, looks to regain his form after recovering from injuries. This would be Federer’s first year without a major title since 2002.

2. Rafael Nadal wins the French Open and Wimbledon. Nadal isn’t going to age as well as Federer, but I don’t think we have to worry about that just yet. He’ll turn 24 in June and has at least two more good seasons left in his sometimes-achy knees. Once he recaptures Paris, he’ll have a lot of confidence headed into Wimbledon.

3. Maria Sharapova wins the Australian Open. In Melbourne, all eyes will be on the newly unretired Justine Henin, last year’s comeback champ, Kim Clijsters, and defending champion Serena Williams. Sharapova will upstage them all. The 24-year-old Russian struggled with injuries in 2009 and couldn’t master a new service motion, but she played better in the fall (and also reverted to her old service motion). Sharapova performs well in Melbourne and there’s no reason she can’t return to the form that won the title there in 2008.  Cheesy Cheesy  wrong here

4. Justine Henin wins the French Open, but not Wimbledon. Since she announced her comeback, Henin has been talking about Wimbledon, the only major title to elude her. Winning it so early in her comeback is too much to ask.

5. Novak Djokovic becomes the No. 1 player in the world. The Serb could accomplish this without winning a major title, since he put in so-so performances in Australia, Paris and London last year (quarterfinals, third round and quarterfinals, respectively) and can gain lots of points at those tournaments. This is the case even if prediction No. 2 (Nadal wins the French Open and Wimbledon) comes true, provided Nadal doesn’t perform nearly as well at the Australian and U.S. Opens, where he has a lot of points to defend (winner and semifinal).

6. Venus Williams doesn’t win a major, contemplates retirement. Last year’s Wimbledon final took a lot out of the elder Williams sister. She’ll turn 30 this year and the women’s field, weak in recent years, is suddenly difficult again now that Justine Henin, Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova are motivated and healthy. If Venus continues to suffer from niggling injuries and perform poorly at the major tournaments, she might well call it quits.

7. Argentina wins the Davis Cup. To residents of the greatest tennis nation to never with the Davis Cup I say, “2010 is your year.” Juan Martin del Potro is getting better by the month. David Nalbandian is ready come back from injury. And for once, the team will get along well enough to capture a title, while defeating Russia and defending champion Spain along the way.

8. Melanie Oudin drops in the rankings. Melanie Oudin is for real. She’s tough-minded, has first-rate footwork, and her playing style is suited to all surfaces. She still needs time to mature, however. Oudin plays a risky game (lots of angles and little margin for error) and I expect her to lose more bets this year, now that people are expecting a lot from her. Good things, perhaps great things, are in her future, but probably not in 2010.

9. Dinara Safina falls outside the Top 10. Safina, who’s been suffering from a lower back injury, was a wreck (mentally and physically) by the end of 2009. In 2010, we’re going to see how tough it is to obtain the No. 1 ranking by playing pretty well everywhere but not winning many tournaments. Safina has points to defend at almost every stop on the tour next season. Her ranking could fall far, and quickly.

10. Andy Roddick becomes a father. I’m not privy to any pending announcement, so calm down. The recently married Roddick would make a good dad, though. Why should papa Federer have all the fun?

2nd Wizards player pleads guilty to gun charge Angry
By SARAH KARUSH, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP)—Washington Wizards guard Javaris Crittenton(notes) pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge Monday, explaining he had a pistol because he feared teammate Gilbert Arenas(notes) would shoot him or blow up his car after the two argued over a card game.

The hearing marked the first time authorities confirmed Crittenton was the other player involved in the confrontation with Arenas, who pleaded guilty Jan. 15 to a felony gun charge.

D.C. Superior Court Senior Judge Bruce Beaudin sentenced Crittenton, 22, to a year of unsupervised probation after Crittenton pleaded guilty to misdemeanor possession of an unregistered firearm. Beaudin ordered Crittenton to mentor young people in Washington and to help with relief efforts for Haiti.

Washington Wizards' guard Javaris Crittenton(notes) leaves D.C. Superior Court with his attorney in Washington on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010. Crittenton has been sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge stemming from a dispute with teammate Gilbert Arenas(notes).

Beaudin didn’t order a specific amount of community service but said his lawyer must report regularly on the work.

Crittenton must also pay a $1,000 fine and $250 into a victims’ fund.

“I accept full responsibility for my bad judgment, my terrible mistake,” Crittenton, who appeared in court wearing a gray suit and glasses, told the judge as he entered the plea. “I’m deeply sorry to the city of Washington, to the Wizards, to my family and to the NBA for this embarrassment.”
