Survivor’ fields colorful pairs of celebrity castaways

CRUZ, MONTERO AND LOPEZ, Topbill GMA 7’s game of odds.

We thought we were on our own reality challenge show when we went to Palawan recently to meet the castaways of GMA 7’s “Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown,” hosted by Richard Gutierrez. Our trip was one for the books: We had to wade through a flood during a 5 a.m. downpour to make our flight.

Then, later, as we made our way back to Puerto Princesa from the island, our van had to be towed out of the mud by a passing 4×4 truck, before it went turtle – and slammed into a wall of hardened soil 15 minutes later! Thank goodness, this year’s contestants – made up of 10 “celebrity pairs” – seem better-prepared for the daunting tasks at hand.

Isabel Granada and Chuckie Dreyfuss looked like they were stuck in teenage limbo as they tried to size up the competition. “We may not look manipulative, but we’re just as competitive as the others,” assures Isabel, whose initial reaction when she first saw the other, taller and brawnier contestants was, “Wala na ba’ng itatangkad ang mga ‘yan?” But, as they demonstrate in the group’s first challenge, size doesn’t really matter!

Dream come true

The ever quotable Maria Isabel Lopez is in it as a favor for her daughter, Mara Yokohama. She explains, “I’m only here to make Mara’s dream come true. I’m a survivor in real life, but this is a different ballgame – hindi predictable gaya ng beauty pageants, kung saan alam mo na agad kung sino’ng standout. I’m a realist. The others may have youth and bulk going for them, but I have wisdom and stamina!”

The former beauty queen was no doubt talking about the formidable pairs of Arnold Aninion and John Odulio of the Philippine Volcanoes, as well as cousins, Arthur Solinap and Carlo Gutierrez, who are primed for the P3-million top prize.

LOPEZ. Topbill GMA 7’s game of odds.

The other pairs to root for are Geneva Cruz and KC Montero, Jackie Forster and Angelicopter Scheing-Cruz, Ellen Adarna and Filo Cucueco, Stef Prescott and Gino dela Peña, Aifha Medina and Alyssa Alano, and Albert Sumaya and Maey Bautista, who expects to provide some laughter on the island.

This early, among our top bets are the attractive pair of Dela Peña and Prescott, who grew up watching the show as a kid. Stef shares, “Part of  ‘Survivor’s’ attraction is how unpredictable it can get, because it’s a game of odds – you can’t tell what’s going to happen until it’s over!”

We also had a lot of fun listening to the playful banter between estranged couple, Geneva Cruz and KC Montero, who describes the show as the “ultimate survival game ever.”

Geneva enthuses, “I’m 35, and I’ve been through so much. I want to test how much patience I have, and how I’ll do outside my comfort zone. As for KC and me, there was a time when we wanted to ‘kill’ each other, but we’re OK now, and we have such great chemistry! Who knows, we might end up doing just that (laughs) – or getting married on the island!”

So, let the games begin!

Michael Jackson likely gave self fatal propofol shot
10/29/2011 | 09:51 PM
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson likely injected himself with a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol after popping an extra eight sedatives without his doctor's knowledge, a Los Angeles court heard on Friday.

Dr. Paul White, the last defense witness in the involuntary manslaughter trial of the singer's physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, said that self-administration was the most likely scenario to explain levels of propofol and lorazepam found in Jackson's system after his death on June 25, 2009.

White said that based on the amount of propofol found in Jackson's urine, he believed the pop star gave himself a further injection of propofol about one hour after Murray has admitted injecting the 50 year-old singer with a relatively small 25 milligram dose of the drug as a sleep aid.

"With the administration of the additional 25 milligrams that we're speculating was self-injected by Mr. Jackson, the level increases rapidly and at the time of death would be almost identical to the level found in the urine at autopsy," White told jurors.

Using a mathematical model, White also said Jackson could have swallowed eight lorazepam tablets earlier in the night as he struggled with sleeplessness, bringing the amount of the sedative found in his blood to that seen at autopsy.

"The combination effect is potentially profound," White said of the two drugs.

Authorities have ruled Jackson died of an overdose of propofol, with lorazepam playing a contributing role.

A rival expert testified for the prosecution last week that he believed Jackson died after Murray left him on an intravenous drip of propofol for a number of hours.

But White said there was no physical evidence at the scene to support the prosecution scenario. It also did not reconcile with Murray's statements about the amount of drugs he gave Jackson that night, White said.

Prosecution experts will cross examine White on Monday as the five-week trial enters its closing stages.

White on Friday questioned the mathematical modeling prepared by prosecution expert Dr. Steven Shafer to support the intravenous propofol drip theory.

In order to reach the blood level of propofol found at autopsy, Jackson would have had to stop breathing right as the last drops fell from a 1,000 milligram bottle of propofol given with an IV drip, White said.

White called Shafer's hypothesis an "incredible coincidence of circumstances."

Murray denies involuntary manslaughter but could face up to four years prison if convicted. His attorneys said earlier this week he will not testify in his own defense.

Murray told police he had been trying to wean Jackson off his dependence on propofol. But he claimed the singer begged him for the drug the day he died.

Prosecution witnesses have also testified that Murray delayed calling emergency services, failed to tell ambulance and hospital staff about the propofol, and say he should never have been giving Jackson the drug for insomnia at all. - Reuters

(CNN) -- In an online confession to fans, reality TV celebrity Kim Kardashian on Tuesday addressed the public reaction to her pending divorce.

The divorce paperwork was filed Monday, 72 days after her "Fairytale Wedding" to NBA player Kris Humphries, which was documented for an E! television special.
Kardashian says marriage was real
Reality TV marriages destined to fail?
Clues to the Kardashian split?

"First and foremost, I married for love. I can't believe I even have to defend this," she blogged on her website.

In the posting, Kardashian talked about the pressures of reality television, saying she had a difficult time making the decision to film her wedding.

"I got caught up with the hoopla and the filming of the TV show that when I probably should have ended my relationship, I didn't know how to and didn't want to disappoint a lot of people," the post said.

Though Kardashian says she accepts full responsibility for her actions, many have tried her in the court of public opinion. Blogs and social media posts have called for a boycott of shows featuring Kardashian and her family.

The Kardashian family brand was built on openness, she wrote in her note.

"These were all real moments. That's what makes us who we are," she wrote. "We share, we give, we love and we are open!"

Ramon Revilla Sr. has 72 kids, says spokesperson

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Former actor and senator Ramon Revilla Sr. fathered 72 children to 16 different women, the spokesman of one of his sons said Wednesday.

Thirty-eight of his children are officially acknowledged and carry his surname, according to Portia Ilagan, spokesperson of Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla  Jr.

The Revilla patriarch was born Jose Acuña Bautista and took the screen name Ramon Revilla when he entered the movies.

His eldest child is Evelyn Bautista, wife of another former senator and basketball legend Robert Jaworski.

Revilla's youngest child, meanwhile, is 15-year-old Abigail.

One daughter, Andrea, said her father is a good role model -- except for his weakness for women.

All of his children, including the slain Ramgen, attend his birthday celebrations.

Despite the large number of his children and grandchildren, members of the Revilla clan have good relationships, Ilagan said.

"Isang dugo sila," she said.

People close to the Revillas said the clan's patriarch supports all of his children.

It also came as a shock for Revilla's children that 2 of their own, Ramon Joseph and Ramona, are accused of being behind the murder of their own brother, Ramgen.

Senior Superintendent Billy Beltran, Parañaque City police chief, said they are looking into the possibility that Ramgen was killed due to a growing squabble with his siblings over the monthly allowance given by the Revilla patriarch.

Revilla patriarch speechless over family tragedy

The clan's patriarch is still speechless over the recent turn of events involving his family, Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. said.

"Kahit sino namang magulang," said Revilla Jr. before visiting his father Wednesday night at the St. Luke's Medical Center in Taguig, where he was confined the day before for cough and fever. "Speechless kami."

The younger Revilla came to the hospital hours after his half-brother Ramgen was buried.

Revilla Jr. said the family is still having a hard time coping with Ram's death, but that the former senator's condition is now stable and getting better.

Revilla Jr. also called on authorities to be careful with their investigation, especially since members of their family have been implicated. The hospital did not release any medical bulletin on Revilla Sr.'s condition on Wednesday. - with reports from Mario Dumaual and Ryan Chua, ABS-CBN News

-- FRJimenez, GMA News
