Share ko lang sa inyo guys, ang opinion ng isang GMA employee tungkol sa current issue na hinaharap nating mga solid Kapuso. Something to Think About I feel like it's my moral obligation as a research person, as a GMA employee, and as a viewer myself to inform as many people as I can --- my friends at the very least --- of the preposterous reports that are being made by our extremely agitated and amusingly inconsistent competitor ABS-CBN about cheating in the ratings.
So I suppose you know by now how ratings are generated: a completely independent research agency like AGB Nielsen Media Research --- which is run by the same Nielsen company which provides the ratings in the US and in many European countries (so a tiny Philippine company like GMA Network is not necessary to covertly fund their operations) --- gets a bunch of households to represent the viewing habits of the urban population of the Philippines. Before they even come up with the panel, they are checked and counterchecked and countercounter checked by their clients: the networks and the ad agencies that fund them.
The National Urban TV Audience Measurement panel --- or NUTAM --- became the official ratings source in January 2007. They had test data beginning November 2006. So the allegations of this informant, Mark, that they were hired by GMA Network beginning April 2006 is completely ridiculous. The only panel that AGB Nielsen had by that time was Mega Manila. Arguably, there were no AGB panels to speak of in Bacolod or anywhere else in the country.
Now they're saying "Ay, nagkamali kami... sa Cebu, Iloilo at Davao din pala" just because GMA has come out and said that these are the only areas where we have satellite offices.
Can you not yet see the obvious lies?
Little trivia: I almost moved to AGB Nielsen. Maya Reforma actually interviewed me. She was a bubbly girl, barely out of her thirties at that time, I remember her talking about writing for a magazine. You've also probably heard of the name Sheila Tan, who is vice-president for GMA Research. She was my boss for about two years. Such a simple woman, she loves chicharon. She's actually friends with Vivian Tin, the head of research of ABS-CBN because they both came from ACNielsen in the early nineties.
And yet their names and reputations are being dragged through the mud all because ABS-CBN wants to make noise. It angers me personally because they're using a very powerful tool --- television --- to invent stories that a plain viewer cannot nitpick and analyze the way a research person can.
One of the first things I learned in MassComm is that the truth cannot be captured by the lens of a camera. There is a whole other world behind it. There is such a thing as editing, good script writing, good lighting, musical score --- it's like making a movie, actually.
And I invite you to analyze them properly. Isolate fact from fiction. I trust that you are as smart as I think you are.
I have been with GMA Network for nine years. I have seen the struggles of programming, of sales and marketing, of news and public affairs. I remember a time when we can only afford to have our parties at the building rooftop. I remember a time when people's salaries were lower than 20k on average. We came from nothing into something, from nobody to somebody. The Gozon-Jimenez-Duavit triumvirate has nothing but GMA Network and their little businesses to fund their simple lifestyles, unlike the Lopezes who have Meralco, Bayantel, Skycable/Homecable, Maynilad and Benpres Holdings. If it was just a matter of funding a large-scale cheating machinery ---- logically ---- who would have more resources? Think about it.
I won't blame you too if you decide to start watching cable or just surf the net for Youtube episodes of NBC, CBS or Fox programs (kaso may writer's strike... boohoo) because you're both pissed off at GMA and ABS and you don't know which to believe. But GMA maintains its stand. We don't need to cheat to be no.1.
I'm not saying this is the official stand from inside. This is my personal analysis of the whole thing. I invite you to "read between the lies" as Atty. Gozon would say. Try writing down the facts instead of watching the plugs as narrated by the soothing voice of the voicers who --- mind you --- are READING A GODDAMN SCRIPT. basta sa arguments di tayo patatalo lalo na at nasa tama tayo...wag magmumura sa mga kapamilya..yaa n nyo silang kung anu-ano lang sabihin..basta di tayo titgil sa pagtatanggol sa KAPUSO network...wala naman silang magawa sa diskusyon eh..walang laban sa mga KAPUSO pepsters...
Basta si Mr MIke Enriquez, suportahan natin,kailangan nya tayo para lumakas loob nya sa mga paninira ng ABS...
