Ravena, Eaglets complete grandslam in UAAP Juniors
Written by: UAAP News Admin

Manila, Philippines - Kevin Ferrer may be the the season MVP but Kiefer Ravena proved his real worth in the game that mattered most.

Ravena showed why he is being hailed as the best High School prospect when he carried the Ateneo Blue Eaglets to a rare grandslam feat in the UAAP juniors basketball, 76-59, against Ferrer's University of Sto. Tomas Tiger Cubs on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ravena outplayed Ferrer in the title-clincher as the son of former PBA star Bong Ravena earned his second straight Finals MVP.

The 16-year old Ravena scored a game-high 24 points, including eight in the first quarter to set the tone for the Eaglets' second consecutive win after losing Game 1 of Finals.  He shot 9-of-19 from the field and collected 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

In contrast, Ferrer was limited by the Eaglets' resolute defense to just 13 points on 3-of-15 shooting from the field but grabbed 10 rebounds for good measure.

After Ferrer made the first basket for the first and only lead of the Tiger Cubs in the game, Ravena quickly went to work.  He scored six of the Eaglets' first 12 points to inch ahead, 12-5, and kept the Tiger Cubs at bay.

With Ferrer shooting bricks, Ravena almost scored at will as the Eaglets enjoyed double digit spreads until the Tiger Cubs came closest at 47-53.

Ravena then took over and poured in eight in an 11-5 run as he brought the Eaglets' lead back to double digits, 64-51, and were never seriously threatened.

The Eaglets completed the grand slam after sweeping the double round elimination and held a thrice-to-beat advantage here in the Finals and needed only two victories to clinch the title.

Ferrer exploded for 35 points back in Game 1 as the Tiger Cubs won, 77-71, but Ravena answered back with 32 points and 8 assists in Game 2 as the Eaglets bounced back, 76-66.

Ravena, who is being wooed away from Ateneo next season, said he is not in a hurry to decide where to play in college.  The Eagles are hoping that Ravena will join Fil-Am giant Greg Slaughter in their team that already boasts of talented crop that include Eric Salamat, Ryan Buenafe and Nico Salva.

"I'll just enjoy this victory first, then play for the RP [Youth] team before making a decision," Ravena said.

Ravena and Ferrer will join the RP Youth Team, who is set to fly to Yemen for the FIBA-Asia U-18 tournament on Wednesday.

"This is the sweetest championship because we finally nailed it [the grandslam] in our third try," said Eaglets coach Mike Jarin, who is in his 13th season with the team.

The Eaglets' latest conquest was not only a Ravena show.  Several Eaglets' chipped in their share in giving the school its 17th juniors title.

Von Pessumal, also a member of the RP Youth team, came up with 15 points on top 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.  Paolo Romero had a huge double-double game with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Chuckie Dumrique also put up 14 points and 5 boards.

Jaypee Sarcia, who came back from a one-game suspension, led the Tiger Cubs with 17 points but shot only 7-of-22 including a poor 3-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Scores:

ADMU 76 - Ravena 24, Pessumal 15, Romero 14, Dumrique 14, Tenorio 5, Javelosa 3, Sacluti 1, Vitangcol 0, Suarez 0, Puno 0, Mercado 0, Lim 0, Gamboa 0, Gadia -. Austria 0.

UST 59 - Sarcia 17, Ferrer 13, Corre 9, Mison 7, Lazaro 6, Cabauatan 5, Gooh 2, Salas 0, Ilarde 0, Florentin 0.

Quarters: 23-14, 35-25, 54-47, 76-59

FEU's Cawaling won't miss Finals Game 1
Written by: UAAP News Admin
9/19/2010/by Alder T. Almo

Manila, Philippines - Far Eastern University Tamaraws' forward JR Cawaling got the green light to play in Game 1 of the UAAP best-of-three Finals, which tips off on Sept. 25.

Cawaling, a Smart Gilas standout, escaped possible suspension after the UAAP Technical Committee led by league Commissioner Ato Badolato reviewed the tape of the FEU-DLSU Final Four match last Thursday where
he was ejected from the game.

Cawaling was tossed out after being assessed with unsportsmanlik e foul on DLSU guard Simon Atkins and a technical foul for verbal tussle in the 4:27 mark of the second quarter and the score tied at 22-all.

"There was no intention to harm.  (JR) Cawaling's unsportsmanlik e foul was meant to stop the fastbreak play, not to hurt the player," explained Badolato.

In that play, Atkins was streaking forward and was about to throw a pass to a teammate near their basket when Cawaling suddenly stopped and bumped the La Salle guard, who fell down sprawling on the floor.  Atkins, who was hurt, immediately stood up to confront Cawaling.  Both playes exchanged some words and pushed each other while the referees and their teammates tried to pacified them.  Cawaling was even seen on TV replays pushing the referee, who was trying to pacify him.

Both were assessed with technical fouls while Cawaling got an additional unsportsmanlik e foul that led to his ejection.

"He is a key player in our rotation. 'Nung nawala siya, I went to three-guard line up for most parts of the game," said FEU coach Glenn Capacio, who emphasized the importance of Cawaling in his team's quest for the elusive title since 2005.

Cawaling is averaging 16.9 minutes and 4.4 points per game this season.  FEU, which clinched the first Finals berth with a 69-59 overtime win against no. 4 seed DLSU, awaits the winner of the Ateneo-Adamson Final Four match up.

Eagles land in Finals, eye "three-peat"
Written by: UAAP News Admin
9/20/2010/by Alder T. Almo

Manila, Philippines – When Ateneo coach Norman Black announced last week that their two wins against the Adamson Falcons in the elimination round “could have gone either way”, it was just a mere ploy.

And the Falcons, playing for the first time in the Final Four since 2006, fell on Black’s trap as the three-peat seeking Ateneo Blue Eagles marched into the Finals of the UAAP Season 73 men’s basketball with a swashbuckling 68-55 win before a delirious Sunday crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Eagles used their vast playoff experience and played with the confidence and swagger of a champion.  In stark contrast, the Falcons, who were confident coming into this game, regressed from their exceptional play in the elimination round and clearly lacked the poise under pressure.

“We really prepared well against Adamson. We broke down everything we’ve seen them do the entire year and luckily for me, I have pretty intelligent players. They were able to grasp what we wanted to do defensively and execute it,” Black said.

The Eagles cut down the Falcons’ size as the smallest player – Emman Monfort – made the biggest difference in their march to the Finals opposite the league’s top team Far Eastern University Tamaraws.

The 5-6 Monfort squeezed out everything from his tiny frame as he ably stepped up with backcourt mate Eric Salamat slowed down by fever last week.

Monfort, a recruit from Ateneo de Iloilo who toiled one season in Team B, displayed his huge heart that belied his small frame, scoring a game-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.

He was perfect from the field in the opening period as the Eagles built a 16-5 lead that was never seriously threatened.

The lead ballooned to 21 points, 60-39 towards the end of the third quarter as the Falcons played just a shell of the team that pushed the Eagles to the limit in their first two meetings – 69-66 and 55-52.

The ghastly rout extended the Eagles mastery over the Falcons to 28 games spanning 13 years.  Adamson last won against Ateneo was way back Sept. 18, 1997 via a 54-52 squeaker when the team was still led by the duo of Eddie Laure and Gherome Ejercito.

“I wasn’t thinking about the match ups, all I was thinking was how to play my role as the team’s point guard,” Monfort said.

The spitfire guard also collected 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals while Salamat, who only attended one practice session before this game due to fever, wound up with 7 points in just 19 minutes of play.

The Falcons bowed out this season with their highest win total [9-6] since the Kenneth Duremdes-led Falcons in 1993 posted an 11-3 record next to University of Sto. Tomas’ 14-0 sweep.

The title showdown between Ateneo and FEU will start on Saturday at 4 pm which will be aired live over ABS CBN’s channel 2 for the first time since the league’s tie-up with the network at the turn of the century.

The Scores:

ADMU 68 - Monfort 22, Long 13, Salva 11, Escueta 7, Salamat 7, Golla 2, Chua 2, Buenafe 2, Austria 2, Dela Cruz 0.

AdU 55 - Alvarez 11, Stinnett 7, Camson 7, Cabrera 7, Manyara 6, Colina 6, Nuyles 4, Lozada 4, Cañada 2, Galinato 1, Etrone 0.

Quarters: 22-12, 39-29, 60-42, 68-55

University of Santo Tomas (UST) slotman Kevin Ferrer cushioned the impact of the Tiger Cubs’ heartbreaking Finals loss by running away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the juniors division of the 73rd UAAP basketball wars.

The 6-foot-4 Ferrer emerged as the top all-around performer in the league this season by garnering 87.2857 Total Statistical Points (TOTSPs) anchored on a pooled output of 8279 points, 184 rebounds, 45 assists, 26 steals, and 36 blocks at the end of the eliminations, according to the latest statistics provided by Imperium Technology, Inc. and Smart Bro.

Pessumal ended up fifth with 58.5000 TOTSPs (168 points, 65 rebouns, 59 assists, 19 steals, and 8 blocks).

Rounding up the Top 10 are: Adamson University’s Irvin Mendoza (57. 2143 TOTSPs), De La Salle Zobel’s Gabby Reyes (57.0000), University of the Philippines’ Kim Rico Cinco (56.2143), La Salle’s Axe Torres (55.4286), and Far Eastern University-FERN’s AA Fabian (54.0714).

The 11th to 20th places are: Ateneo’s Paolo Romero, Adamson’s Joseph Manlangit, NU’s Jonel Parungao, UST’s Bryan Ilarde and Jaypee Sarcia, FEU-FERN’s Immanuel Custodio, NU’s Ralph Atangan, Ateneo’s Jay Javelosa, UST’s Airon Cabauatan, and FEU-FERN’s Mark Tanoy.

Ravena and Ferrer capped their final year of play by leading all scorers with 20.9 and 19.9 points a game, respectively.

The 5-foot-11 Ateneo wunderkind also finished second in assists with 5.2 feeds an outing behind FEU’s Fabian.

Ferrer for his part topped the rebounding (13.1 rpg) and blocks (2.6 bpg) departments, respectively. He also held the single-game record in points – with 37 against UP in the first round, and blocks – with 6 versus Ateneo and FEU in the second round.

Ferrer and Ravena will be leaving today to join the rest of the Philippine team for the upcoming FIBA Under-18 Championships in Yemen this week.
