FEU blames defeat on lack of experience, poise
By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated October 01, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - Far Eastern University’s quest to go all the way to the title after leading most of the UAAP Season 73 seniors basketball tournament got spoiled by the Tams’ lack of experience and poise in the pressure-packed championship stage.

While Ateneo hit the nerve-wracking baskets down the stretch, the Tams saw themselves miss four foul shots, two triples and a short jumper at crunchtime as the Eagles hacked out a three-peat-clinching 65-62 win at the Araneta Coliseum yesterday.

“In our Game 1 loss (49-72), we were completely overwhelmed; we did not know how to react to playing in the finals. Today (Game 2), we were much better, but for me, it was championship experience (that spelled the difference,” said FEU athletic director Mark Molina, who spoke to the media in behalf of the Tams’ coaching staff that worked without coach Glen Capacio, who left the game after experiencing high blood pressure at halftime.

“I have to congratulate Ateneo – they just had five turnovers today. Five turnovers, in any league, is amazing, much more in a championship so their poise was incredible today. They took care of business and we have to give them a lot of credit there,” he added.

The FEU exec cited the triple launched by Ateneo’s Ryan Buenafe with 22.1 seconds left that broke the Tams’ back.

“Ryan Buenafe is a seven percent three-point shooter before the shot so I guess this is what they call having the guts to take the big shot, the experience of having two championships already,” Molina said.

In contrast, the Tams flubbed their big shots.

“Paul Sanga missed a wide open three-point shot, so did RR Garcia and Reil Cervantes had a short jumper that he missed and then (there’s the) four free throws (missed), one from Aldrech Ramos, one from Reil and two from Paul. If only we made even two or three of those, we could have tied the game or even led by one. But I guess Ateneo is really destined to achieve a three-peat,” he said.

Still, FEU’s board representative Anton Montinola said they will look at this runner-up finish as a step up.

“Not bad, we were 12-2 (win-loss) after the elims. Every year since 2007 we improved. We lost the playoff for fourth in the Final Four in 2007 then in 2008, we lost to La Salle, and in 2009, we lost to UE. But every year our record improves and this year, we went 12-2, but just couldn’t pull it off. We made the finals but we didn’t make the championship,” Montinola said.

In Capacio’s absence, Louie Gonzales took over coaching chores with the help of assistants Ritchie Ticzon and ex-coach Bert Flores lending a hand.

Ateneo wins PCCL crown
By UAAP News Admin on 12/6/2010 5:49:07 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University dropped the "Long" bombs that whipped a tenacious Adamson University off the radar to prevail, 73-67, and complete its back-to-back title drive Monday in Game 3 of the 2010 Philippine Collegiate Champions League at the San Juan Arena.

Kirk Long played the detonator's role in gutting the Falcons alive as he came up with huge 25-point output anchored on an impressive 5-of-6 sniping from behind the arc, including three triples in the pay-off period to stave off the Falcons' repeated fight-backs.

"We just showed that we wanted it (the title) more than them. We came out more aggressive in the fourth, making unselfish plays and stepping up our intensity a notch higher," said the fourth-year American swingman, who also went 4-of-7 from the perimeter on top of 4 rebounds and 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Tournament MVP Nico Salva added 24 point on 8-of-11 shooting while converting all his 8 freethrows, plus 6 boards, a feed, and a rejection in 28 minutes of action.

Down 27-33 at the half, the Eagles waxed hot in the third quarter with a blistering 15-4 run capped by a Long three-point play to seize the lead, 42-37.

The Falcons briefly doused the fire on Janus Lozada's go-head triple with 4:26 to go before Long and Salva teamed up in a 13-4 Ateneo counter-salvo which gave the Eagles their first double-digit advantage, 55-44, entering the pay-off period.

Ateneo maintained its 11-point cushion midway in the fourth with back-to-back triples from Emman Monfort and Long plus a Salva lay-up to pad the count at 63-52.

A Jan Colina fadeaway chopped the deficit to 56-63. But Long quickly answered, knocking in a shotclock-beating fadeaway trey - his fourth three-ball of the game - off a Frank Golla pick from the deep left flank to restore the Eagles' twin-digit margin.

Still the Falcons remained unfazed, uncorking an 8-2 blitz on the combined efforts of Colina, Eric Camson, and Alex Nuyles to move within 62-66 with 1:58 remaining. But  that was the closest the Falcons could get as Salva buried two gift shots and Long fired another booming three in the ensuing play to silence the Falcons for good.

"We just made good adjustments today in our game plan and it worked out for us, particularly in the second half. We’re just lucky to get away with the win today,"  said Ateneo coach Norman  Black whose wards also overcame a 1-nil series deficit against Far Eastern University to win the PCCL crown last season.

"It’s another great feeling. Some people maybe tired of us winning, but we’re not. Hopefully, we can continue it next year. It’s been a great three-year run for this group," said Black, who was named Best Coach.

The series victory earned the Eagles the top purse of P400,000 worth of athletic equipment and the right to represent the country in the 18th Super Kung Sheung Cup on December 14-19 in Hong Kong.

Camson led the Falcons with 15 points, while Colina and Lester Alvarez added 13 and 11, respectively. Nuyles, the Falcons'  leading scorer in the tournament, tallied 11 markers and 13 rebounds for Adamson, which took home P200,000 worth of athletic equipment.

Long and Salva also led the Mythical Team selection composed of University of Cebu's Junmar Fajardo, Alvarez and Nuyles.

The Basketball Controversy
fromfashionpul is

I was surprised that the media did not report on this story when I first learned about this. Yesterday, I had to make several phone calls to verify the truth behind this story. The people I rang told me that this happened more than two months ago but the university ordered a news blackout. After reading this story, please do not accuse me of doing a demolition job because I am from another university.

In this year’s much awaited university basketball league, fans of these two varsity players will no longer see them in action. The university officials have expelled the two players from the team after catching them in a bloody boxing match. Do you want to know the reason behind the big fight?

Apparently, the girlfriend of Player B accused Player A of sexual assault. She did file a case with the proper authority but the university officials were quick to respond. Through the help of a powerful and influential university alumnus, the case was settled immediately. As to how the case was settled, no one really knows about the details.

To protect the university’s image and avoid controversies, the university has decided not to include these two players in this year’s roster. According to the university officials, Player A will not be able to participate in this year’s league due to his poor health condition. As for Player B, they claimed that he is no longer academically qualified to continue his studies in their institution. Player B has actually returned to the school where he was originally from and he will be playing for this school’s basketball team again.
