Warriors exit with a win, Maroons go 0-14
by Alder T. Almo

Manila, Philippines – It came too late but nevertheless, the University of the East Red Warriors ended their worst season since 2001 with their heads unbowed.

With James Martinez all pumped up in his farewell game in the UAAP, the Warriors marooned the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, 67-61, on Saturday to finish with a 6-8 card, just two games short of barging into the Final Four.

Martinez, who missed last season’s trip to the Finals with an ACL injury, left the league with a performance that he will probably bring to the pro ranks next year.

Martinez went against the Maroons almost 1-on-5 in the second canto where the sweet shooting guard scattered 11 of his team-high 17 points in dealing UP its second 0-14 season.

As Martinez was busy puncturing the hoops from afar, the Maroons, on the other hand, went to their graduating center Magi Sison inside.

Sison, who also wishes to join Martinez in the PBA next year, also poured it all.  The big man from Pangasinan tried to answer Martinez with 7 of his career-high 21 points in that searing second quarter duel but it was clear that Sison was on the short end of the stick.

Despite Sison’s career game (17 rebounds and 4 blocks), the Warriors, who wished the second round was the first round, played with the confidence of a playoff team and held on to the victory.

“How I wish itong second round ay first round but the wins came a little bit too late.  ‘Yung pride na lang namin ang nagdala sa amin, siyempre ayaw ko rin ma-ridicule,” said UE coach Lawrence Chongson, whose return next season is under a cloud of uncertainty.

Raffy Reyes, who also played his last game, backed up Martinez with 11 points and four rebounds.  Sophomore Ken Acibar, who is being groomed to be the Warriors’ future leader, also chipped in 11 points and plucked down 8 boards and had 2 blocks.

“Alam naman ng lahat na first round talaga kami nagkulang.  ‘Yung sinasabi nga ni coach (Lawrence) ay hindi naman yung ibang teams ang kalaban naming kundi sarili namin.  Hindi pa fully healed ang injury (fractured right foot) ko tapos ang daming rookies, late na nila nalaman kung ano talaga role nila sa team,” said Paul Lee, who vowed to play out his remaining year of eligibility next season.

Lee, who had taken a back seat this season with FEU Tamaraw RR Garcia’s emergence, filled up the stats sheet.  The enigmatic guard collected 8 points, 8 boards, 9 assists and 3 steals, showing a glimpse of how dominant he could be when 100% healthy.

“Magco-concentrate muna ako this off-season sa conditioning at strengthening ng paa ko.  Babalik ang UE next season,” Lee promised.

Tams surviveArchers, return to Finals
Sep 16/Written by: UAAP News Admin
by Alder T. Almo

Manila, Philippines – Oh Romeo my Romeo!

Staring at another Final Four meltdown, the Far Eastern University Tamaraws found their hero in Rookie of the Year Terrence Romeo, who willed the team to the UAAP Finals with an emotional 69-59 overtime win against fourth seed De La Salle Green Archers on Thursday.

Infront of raucous crowd inside the historic Araneta Coliseum, Romeo played like a veteran in the overtime making big shot after big shot that flattened the upset bid of the Archers.

The 18-year old guard, who once scored a league record 83 points in the UAAP juniors, strung up five straight points that wiped out a 59-57 La Salle lead.

After Samuel Joseph Marata sank his only three-pointer in 10 attempts to give the Archers a 59-57 lead, Romeo buckled down to work.

Romeo pulled up for a jumper at the elbow to tie the game, 59-all, and after a La Salle miscue at the other end, he went for the killer trey that gave the Tamaraws a 62-59 advantage heading into the final 2:06 of the overtime.

Romeo’s big shot sent tremors to the young Archers, who suddenly went from composed into total disarray, after controlling most parts of the game.

Reil Cervantes and Paul Sanga, who sent the game into overtime with a long triple in the final 30.9 seconds of the regulation, iced the contest at the stripes.

“Grabe yung pusong ipinakita niya sa larong ito. Ibang (Terrence) Romeo na ang makikita niyo sa Finals, said FEU coach Glenn Capacio, who finally steered the Tamaraws into the Finals in his fourth season as a head coach.

Romeo more than made up for RR Garcia’s sub-par game with 12 points on 7-of-13 shooting on top of five rebounds, two assists and same number of steals.

Garcia, the league’s MVP, was hounded by the pesky La Salle defense all game long forcing him to shoot 5-of-19 from the field as he finished with only 11 points, 6 points below his 16.8 average.

“I’m happy for Terrence (Romeo). Talagang nag-step up siya. Hindi ako maka-shoot kasi nasa akin ang focus ng depensa nila (La Salle). Kaya sabi ni coach maging decoy lang ako at mag-create para sa teammates ko,” Garcia said.

Almost given up for dead, the Tamaraws rose from the grave to survive the Archers.

FEU bucked the ejection of JR Cawaling in the second period and a technical foul issued on Capacio in the third canto to get into the Finals outright.

Cawaling’s football tackle on La Salle’s Simon Atkins led to his ejection in the 4:27 mark of the second period with the game tied at 22-all.

The Smart Gilas standout, who might sit out Game 1 of the Finals, got an unsportsmanlik e foul for tackling Atkins and a technical foul on pushing him and the referee, who tried to pacify him during the height of the drama.

After the call, the Tamaraws lost control of the game and the Archers went on an 8-0 blast that gave them a 30-22 lead, which they held on until the overtime.

“I’m happy for the boys though I’m not happy with the officiating. The boys showed great character out there,” said Capacio, who was called for a technical foul for his outburst during the third quarter on what he perceived was a spotty officiating.

The Tamaraws were assessed with 29 fouls compared to the Archers’ 21, which led to 16 free throw attempts disparity. The Archers shot 18-of-36 at the stripes while the Tamaraws went 12-of-20.

FEU, which is in the Finals for the first time since beating, ironically, La Salle in 2005, awaits the winner of the other Final Four match between second seed and defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles and third seed Adamson Falcons.

The Eagles and Falcons square off on Sunday with the former holding a twice-to-beat advantage.

Ravena takes charge as Eaglets near 3-peat
By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) Updated September 17, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo banked on Kiefer Ravena’s brilliant all-around game to beat University of Santo Tomas, 76-66, and move one win away from completing a three-peat in the UAAP Season 73 juniors basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Ravena erupted for 32 points, five rebounds, eight assists, two steals and one shot block as the Blue Eaglets bounced back from their 71-77 setback at the start of the finals last Tuesday, their first since going 14-0 in the elims and making the championship round outright.

“Our energy was a little low last time and the players were somewhat rusty, having rested for two weeks . But that’s not an excuse, we have to give credit to UST, they really played hard that time and were well-coached,” said Ateneo coach Jamike Jarin, whose wards will gun for the title on Sunday.

“And because we lost, we came out hungrier and played with more intensity today (yesterday),” he added. “And our championship experience worked for us.”

On his fourth finals stint, Ravena took charge for the Eaglets and led a 23-5 assault that gave the Eaglets a 38-31 upperhand in the second quarter after falling behind by 11 at 15-26.

The son of ex-PBA star Bong Ravena continued to pour in the points (13) in the third and joined forces with fellow veterans Von Pessumal and Charles Dumrique to give AdMU a 71-57 lead with 1:26 left.

“Kiefer Ravena makes me look good, he makes the team look good. I give it to him, he’s highly motivated, being on his final year, and we really expect those things from him.,” Jarin said.”But I really feel in my heart that is not a Kiefer Ravena team.”

The Eaglets shackled UST star Kevin Ferrer to a mere nine points on 2-of-6 shooting, two days after the soon-to-be-named MVP exploded with 35 points.

With Ferrer silent, Ismael Corre (25) and Airon Cabauatan (16) took the scoring cudgels for UST, which played without the suspended Jaypee Sarcia.
