Banned Movies Pilipinas screens films by Seymour on May 19

The theme of Banned Movies Pilipinas for this May is entitled "Vote for Meyor: Sanchez Gets Banned!" On Saturday, the films Lababo and Pagbugtaw will be screened at the Freedom Bar in Quezon City.

Banned Movies Pilipinas, an independent film and music vehicle and home of indie film premieres, will hold its May screening entitled "Vote for Meyor: Sanchez Gets Banned!"

Select films of Seymour Barros-Sanchez, popularly known as "Meyor," will be shown on May 19 at Freedom Bar in Anonas Quezon City. The one-night only event will premiere his latest film Size Medium of the Shorts trilogy as well as his other films.

"Vote for Meyor: Sanchez Gets Banned!" also showcases talented indie acts Los Chupacabras, Delacrus, Lem's Guitar, Morigan, solo act Paw Navarro, Jeffplane, Hoodlums in Robe, and many others.

Seymour is an engineer, a professor, a writer and an advocacy filmmaker. The former Editor-in-Chief of the Philippine Collegian of the University of the Philippines is also the founder and adviser of the University of Makati Film Society where he is an instructor for the Center for Performing and Digital Arts. He has honed his writing skills to direct and co-write several films that reflect not only his talent but his passion for advocacy.

His film Lababo (Kitchen Sink), co-written and directed together with Ginalyn Dulla, covers significant dates concerning the Philippines' relationship with the United States. Parallel to these events are the lives of two Filipinas (Nerissa Icot and Virnie Tolentino) who fall for the same American soldier (Stephen Patrick Moore).

Locally, Lababo was in exhibition at the 8th Cinemanila International Film Festival and won Grand Prize at the Viva-Pinoy Box Office (PBO) Digitales Short Film Competition. It has also competed abroad for the the 48th Bilbao Film Festival in Spain, a first nomination for the country, and the 8th International Panorama of Independent Film and Video in Athens in Greece. In addition, it was in exhibition at the Jakarta Slingshortfest.

Pagbugtaw (Waking Up) tells the story of a city-bred man who remembered his father, a native of Guimaras, amid the prevalent water pollution, oil-driven US war against Iraq, series of oil price hikes and the largest oil spill in Philippine history. He wakes up from his apathy and decides to take action for good. The film forms part of the anthology Guimaras: Short Films from the Oil Spill.

Yet another film, Sinulog for Beginners, won second prize at the 2006 Sinulog Video Documentary Competition.
