Newcomer Kalil Almonte (back to camera) and Mercedes Cabral topbill the horror-love story Gayuma. This indie film, shot mostly in Bicol, features a "dancing Sto. Nino."
Mga makabuluhang indie films rin ang nilabasan niya the past two years. Kabilang na dito ang Ang Panggagahasa Kay Fe ni Direk Alvin Yapan na nagwagi ng Golden Prize Award for Best Digital Feature Film at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival.
Nagwagi rin ang pelikula ng Special Jury prize sa Cinemalaya 2009, gayundin ang Ani ng Dangal award by the President of the Philippines and was nominated for five Gawad Urian Awards.
"The movie was written specifically for Mercedes Cabral. We feel kasi that she is underrated and underutilized sa industriya. She is known internationally, but here in the Philippines, people do not give her enough credit.
"The roles she's given do not give justice to the immense talent that she has. Kaya namin naisipang gawin ang Gayuma specifically for her. And we're casting her out of type. Dito, mayaman siya, sosyal, always in control and very poised and cultured. A strong woman pa rin, pero in a very youthful way. Here, she will make you fall in love with her and in some cases, also make you cry."
The usual, baka raw malaman ng pamilya niya.
"So we looked for someone na in Manila. We auditioned theater actors from Tanghalang Pilipino at isang indie actor, pero hindi nag-work.
Kuwento ni Alem, "Both Kalil and Mercedes had to learn Bicol. We spent about a month learning and rehearsing the lines with them para lang makuha nila ang accent nang tama. We even gave them a recording of the entire script para mapakinggan nila on their own.
"May element of horror ang film kasi in between the love story of the two, may isang bangkay na na-possessed.
