The indie film Laruang Lalake, directed by Jay Altarejos and produced by Lex Bonife, is currently being screened in cinemas. It stars Arjay Carreon (left) and Mark Fabillar (right).

Kilala sina Direk Joselito "Jay" Altarejos at Lex Bonife bilang isang "winning tandem" dahil kumikita sa takilya ang kanilang mga pelikulang ginawa at pinaparangalan rin ang mga ito, hindi lamang sa bansa, kundi pati na abroad.

Ang grupo nina Direk Jay at Lex ang naghatid ng dalawang critically and commercially successful Pinoy indie gay films--Ang Lihim Ni Antonio at Ang Lalake Sa Parola.

Ang Lihim ni Antonio (Antonio's Secret, 2008) ay isang pelikula tungkol sa pagdidiskubre ng sexuality ng isang teenager. Tampok rito sina Kenjie Garcia, Josh Ivan Morales, Jiro Manio, and Shamaine Buencamino.

Ipinalabas commercially noong early 2008, ang Antonio ay tinanghal rin sa Special Selection division ng Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival (July 2008).

Umikot rin ito sa iba't ibang international film festivals abroad: Una ay sa official selection ng Image-Out: Rochester Lesbian & Gay Film festival sa Rochester, New York, USA (October 2008).

Bonggang-bongga ang newcomer na si Kenjie Garcia dahil nanalo ito bilang Best Actor para sa nasabing movie--not once, but twice--at sa magkabukod na international film festivals sa Spain.

Ito ay sa Festival Del Sol De Gran Canaria para sa Spain's LGBT (Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) film festival na ginanap noong January 2010; at ang Festival Del Mar En Mallorca also this year.

Ang new wave pink film na ito nina Altarejos at Bonife ay ipinalabas sa LGBT Film Festival in New York USA (June 2009); sa Torino Gay and Lesbian Film Festival sa Turin, Italy (April 2010); at nanalong Best Film sa Festival Del Mar En Mallorca at sa first edition of International Film Festival Gay and Lesbian of Valencia (Festival De La Luna) sa Valencia, Spain (September 2010).

Locally, na-nominate rin si Kenjie bilang New Actor of the Year sa PMPC Star Awards for Movies 2009 at sa Breakthrough Performance by an Actor category ng Golden Screen Awards 2009. Nominated rin sa said PMPC awards si Shamaine Buencamino para sa parehong pelikula.

Ang ikalawang pelikula ng Altarejos-Bonife tandem ay ang record-breaking gay flick na Ang Lalake Sa Parola/ The Man in the Lighthouse (2007), launching movie ni Harry Laurel, kasama sina Justin de Leon and Jennifer Lee. Nag-quit nga lang sa showbiz si Harry sa personal na kadahilanan.

Graded "B" ng Cinema Evaluation Board, Ang Lalake Sa Parola ay ipinalabas rin sa Manila Pride Fest ng Mandaluyong City (October 2007); sa Director's Cut Film Festival ng University of the Philippines (March 2008); at sa Special Selection ng Cinemalaya 2008.

Dahil sa pagiging "blockbuster hits" ng Lalake Sa Parola as early as 2007, ito ay nagpa-inspire sa ibang indie film producers na gumawa ng gay-themed movies upang tumipak rin sa takilya.

Maliban sa dalawang "gay indie gems" na ito nina Altarejos at Bonife, ginawa rin nila ang Kambyo/ Change Gear (2008), Little Boy Big Boy (2009), at Ang Lalake Sa Buhay Ni Juan (2009). Ginawa ni Direk Jay ang Pink Halo-Halo (official entry ng Cinemalaya 2010, Directors' Showcase), ngunit si Altarejos na ang screenwriter.

LARUANG LALAKE. Ngayong October 27, 2010 (Miyerkules), may panibagong handog na pelikula ang bantog na tandem sa gay-themed movies: ang Laruang Lalake.
