The fabulous four just got even funnier! Last year, moviegoers were treated to the funny escapades of beautiful half-sisters played by Ruffa Gutierrez, Rufa Mae Quinto, Marian Rivera and Iza Calzado. This time, they face their problems together with their long-lost half-sister Luga Luda (played by Ogie Alcasid).


THE PLOT. The siblings are facing more serious problems but they keep their poise and humor intact. Being a first-time mother, Stephanie (Iza Clazado) is experiencing post-partum blues, causing her to become paranoid about the faithfulness of her husband (TJ Trinidad).

Isabella (Ruffa Gutierrez) is sent to prison for the second time but through it all, she is supported by Vito (Jay-R). Find out if the single mother will finally have the courage to settle down with the ramp model.

Now divorced with Dave (Wendell Ramos), Patricia (Rufa Mae Quinto) meets a new suitor in the person of Congressman Fely (Christian Vasquez). The smooth-talking fellow wows her with his grand gestures of love, usually involving helicopters.

The youngest of the sisters, Courtney (Marian Rivera) is having difficulty balancing her hectic workload and her married life with Patrick (Will Devaughn).

THE VERDICT. Desperadas 2 is a barrel of laughs from start to finish. Each of the girls have their own moment in the spotlight and there are several standout scenes that deserve special mention.

While having dinner at a posh restaurant, Stephanie (Iza) brings out a breast pump that opens up discussion about babies and family life. It's admirable how the scriptwriter managed to send the message that it's perfectly natural to use a breast pump in public while eliciting chuckles from the audience. In this sequel, Iza showed her versatility as an actress by portraying a woman who's suicidal one moment and a hotheaded kung fu master the next instant.

Isabella (Ruffa) gets into more trouble this time since she runs over a guy (played by Carlo Guevarra) while driving her car. Her fashionista character went overboard since she prioritized her change of outfit over the safety of the person whom she hit.

The character of Courtney (Marian) also suffers from lack of development in dealing with her marital relationship. Due to her busy work schedule, she hardly has time for her husband. In the end, Patrick goes back to her even though they do not reach any compromise regarding their marital problems. It seems like they just make up to give the movie a happy ending. 

But the laugh-out-loud scenes definitely go to Patricia (Rufa Mae). Seeing the sexy comedienne in a kinky sex scene with Congressman Fely will definitely delight male audience members. Rufa Mae has a tendency to overact in some of her scenes but she remains lovable just the same.

Viewers are introduced to Luga Luda (Ogie) via a grand entrance complete with ethnic dancers and a hilarious translation sequence involving thespian Joy Viado. Ogie is very effective as a woman and there is a conscious effort on his part to differentiate Luga Luda from his other female character, the spoiled brat Angelina. He churns out a mild-mannered female who often provides solutions to the problems of her half-sisters.

It is interesting to note that Luga Luda does a rain dance during one of the key scenes of the movie. The plot device is a reference to the "sun dance" performed by Sarah Geronimo in the Star Cinema movie A Very Special Love.

Another highlight of Desperadas 2 is the fashion shoot that the five sisters do for a calender. If Regal Entertainment would print out these calendars for real, I dare say fans would gladly snap them up for the impeccable fashion sense displayed by all the cast members.

Desperadas 2 is an entertaining comedy that will delight male and female viewers alike. The guys have plenty of eye candy from the fabulous sisters while gals will rave over the well-sculpted physique of Will Devaughn. The former Pinoy Big Brother housemate had no qualms wearing his underwear for the big screen. Don't miss the tender scenes between Ogie and Carlo Guevarra, his "bagets" love interest in the movie.

Regal Entertainment's 48th anniversary offering, Desperadas 2, is currently being screened in cinemas nationwide as part of the 34th Metro Manila Film Festival.
