Some co-stars are competing against each other for acting awards in the 32nd Gawad Urian. Baron Geisler of Jay (upper left) has been nominated in the Best Actor category along with Paolo Rivero and Coco Martin of Daybreak. In the Best Actress category, Judy Ann Santos (lower left) of Ploning is pitted against Jaclyn Jose and Gina Pareño of Serbis

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino has already released the list of nominees for the 32nd Gawad Urian for excellence in filmmaking.

In last year's edition, the indie film Tirador was hailed as "Pinakamahusay na Pelikula" while its director Brillante Mendoza was cited for "Pinakamahusay na Direksyon." The recipient of the Natatanging Gawad Urian was acclaimed filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik.

The awards night of the 32nd Gawad Urian is set for September 19 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

This year's outstanding nominees for Best Picture are all indie films: Francis Xavier Pasion's Jay, Brillante "Dante" Mendoza's Serbis, Arnel Mardoquio's Hunghong sa Yuta (Earth's Whisper), Lav Diaz's Melancholia, Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil's Boses, Sherad Anthony Sanchez' Imburnal, and Richard Somes' Yanggaw.

It is interesting to note that Daybreak co-stars Coco Martin and Paulo Rivero are competing against each other for the Best Actor trophy while Serbis co-stars Gina Pareño and Jaclyn Jose are also pitted against each other for the Best Actress Award.

Based on the list given by the Manunuri, Yanggaw earned 11 nominations out of the 12 categories of Gawad Urian. This included double nominations for Tetchie Agbayani and Aleera Montalla of Yanggaw for the category Best Supporting Actress.

Direk Dante's film Serbis bagged ten nominations this year while Melancholia, Lav Diaz's eight-hour pastoral meditation on love, life and suffering, earned 8 nominations.

Two of the films nominated for Best Picture were shot in Mindanao: Hunghong sa Yuta, described by the Manunuri as a "poignant movie about war and peace in Mindanao as seen through the eyes of deaf-mute children" and Imburnal, which is called "a bucolic but mordant romp through the dirty creeks and grimy alleys of Davao City."

Competence is relative when it is judged by an 8-member group like the Manunuri. But this is a relatively good list.

    Fearless forecast:

    FILM
    Which will win Jay
    Which should win: Melancholia

    DIRECTOR
    Who will win LAV DIAZ
    WHo should win LAV DIAZ

    ACTOR
    Who will win: Baron Geisler
Who should win: Julian Duque/ Neil Sese

    ACTRESS
    Who will win: Anita Linda
    Who should win: Angeli Bayani

    SUPPORT ACTOR
    Who will win Julio Diaz
    Who should win Roeder Camanag

I hope the Manunuri wont give the supporting actor award to Coco Martin just because he has a double nomination. His performance, although felt, is not brilliant. I hope they lean from their mistake of giving it to Emilio Garcia last year Selda whose acting was simply mediocre.

    SUPPORT ACTRESS
    Who will win Flor Salangga
    Who should win Agot Isidro

If the Manunuri can't pick a decent film the mainstream films, that's their disgression. Just because they were produced by a big film outfit doesn't mean that they deserve to be nominated.

iba talaga ang urian, walang nakapasok na mainstream movies puro indie films.

eto lang talaga ang award-giving body na nirerespeto kasi puro critics at walang pweding mang-gapang o magbayad ng award dito.

congrats to the nominees! mabuhay kayo! at mabuhay ang digital cinema!

isa lang ang ibig sabihin nyan..
mas maraming mahuhusay na pelikula sa indie..
sana matauhan ang mga mainstream... na kelangan natin ng bago at hindi recycled na pelikula.. go indie..
