Renowned film director and Tanglaw ng Lahi awardee Laurice Guillen makes a stage comeback in Tanghalang Ateneo's production of Tennessee Williams' classic play, The Glass Menagerie. The play will run from February 8 - 10 at the Rizal Mini Theater at the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City.
Laurice's filmography as a director include: Tanging Yaman (2000), American Adobo (2001), and Santa Santita (2004).
The Glass Menagerie tells the tale of a family on the verge of collapse. The family matriarch, Amanda Wingfield (played by Direk Laurice) urges her children to contribute in securing the family's future. But Tom, her son, wants to quit his job at the shoe factory and leave home, while Laura, her very shy daughter, is content to stay at home and play with her collection of glass figurines. Amanda believes that the solution is to get Laura married. She asks Tom to invite a gentleman for dinner so he can meet Laura. The gentleman does come, but his stay at the Wingfield household only tears the family apart.
The director's performance marks her return to the stage in nearly 30 years. In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Laurice entered the Ateneo to pursue a master's program in theater arts under Rolando S. Tinio. While in the program, Laurice appeared in several plays, among them The Promise, Paglipas ng Dilim, The Knack, and The Cherry Orchard. She was also invited to act for other companies doing classics such as Flores para los Muertos (A Streetcar Named Desire) and The Trojan Women. But stage work receded to the backstage when her film career bloomed.
Her decision to return to the Ateneo is in part a tribute to the campus where she began to hone her acting skills. It also serves as an excellent opportunity to act with her two daughters, Ina and Anna Feleo, who alternate as Laura. Ina finished her Bachelor in Fine Arts, major in Creative Writing, at the Ateneo last year. She and sister Anna have never seen their mother act on stage. Now she is acting with them!
Together with Direk Laurice are two Ateneo alumni, Ronan Capinding (AB1994) and Jake de Leon (AB 2005), who play Tom. Meanwhile, Arnold Reyes and Randy Villarama portray the Gentleman who is set up with Laura. An ensemble of Tanghalang Ateneo actors appear as the Chorus.
Director Ricardo Abad and production designer Salvador F. Bernal, National Artist for Theater Design, collaborate to set the play in circa 1930s. Jonjon Villaruel handles the lighting design, Dexter Santos does choreography, while Von de Guzman infuses the play with his original music. Production Manager is Joseph Jesus Ignacio (AB2006).
