Award-winning actors lead the cast of TANYAG, a production of award-winning plays about contemporary Philippine society to be staged at the Philamlife Theater on August 28 (7:00 PM) and August 29-30 (3:00 PM), 2009.

The public will be able to watch critically acclaimed plays such as Our Lady of Arlegui by Chris Martinez (First Prize, 2007) J. Dennis Teodosio's Baka Sakali (Second Prize, 2007) and Ang Kalungkutan ng mga Reyna by Floy Quintos (First Prize, 2008).

Performing the Palanca Award-winning plays are 2009 Gawad Buháy Outstanding Actress Shamaine Buencamino, 2009 Cinemalaya Best Actor Lou Veloso, veteran actor Bodgie Pascua, and actor/director/designer Tuxqs Rutaquio, together with Acey Aguilar, Abner Delina, Jerald Napoles, Martha Nikko Comia and Anna Deroca.

The plays will be directed by Dennis Marasigan and Floy Quintos with set and costume design by Tuxqs Rutaquio.


OUR LADY OF ARLEGUI is a rollicking comedy about a student who finds himself trapped with a Muslim woman who runs a DVD stall when authorities raid the premises in search of pirated discs. Their reluctant efforts to overcome mutual mistrust end in interesting fashion in this comedy winner by Chris Martinez,  the award-winning playwright of Welcome to Intelstar and Last Order sa Penguin and the films Bridal Shower and 100.

 

In BAKA SAKALI, a young man tries to convince his grandfather of the folly of  entrusting their future on the possibility of winning a television game show.  His efforts are in vain, resulting in a tragedy that befell many other Filipinos.  This play inspired by true-to-life events is written by J. Dennis Teodosio, the same author of Geegee and Waterina.

 

ANG KALUNGKUTAN NG MGA REYNA is another comedy about the female President of the Philippines who had an epiphany: what the country needs is a monarchy.  She prepares to join the ranks of the world's royalty by engaging the tutelage of a fashion designer who must bring taste and regal manners into the palace.  This play won four Gawad Buhay Awards, including Outstanding Performance of an Actress, Outstanding Production of a One-Act Play, and Outstanding Original Script for Writer/Director Floy Quintos.

 

"Tanyag" is a Filipino word which literally means "famous" or "known." It is also the term used to denote a scene in traditional Filipino plays, particularly those written during the early 1900s.


TANYAG , which goes on a nationwide tour after its performances at the Philamlife Theater, United Nations Avenue, Manila, is presented by the International Institute for Film and Arts (IIFA).
