Married couple Ayen Munji-Laurel and Franco Laurel appear in the rock musical Banaag at Sikat but their characters are not paired with each other.

Sinabi rin ni Franco na may sampung taon na mula nang gumanap sila ni Ayen sa isang stage play bilang magkatambal.

"Ang ginagawa namin is nagsusuportahan kami," sabi rin niya. "Kunyari, may trabaho ako, susuportahan niya ako. May trabaho siya, susuportahan ko siya. Ngayon lang kami nagkasama uli."

Sina Franco at Ayen Munji-Laurel ay may tatlong supling named Mariella, Hasan, and Angia.

AWARD-WINNING THESPIANS. Kapwa premyado sa kanilang larangan sina Ayen at Franco Laurel. They both won at the 2009 Aliw Awards. Franco won Best Stage Actor (in a Musical) for Floy Quintos' Isang Panaginip na Fili. Ayen Munji-Laurel won Best Actress (in a Musical) for Atang, kung saan ginampanan ng singer-actress ang papel ng legendary pre-war Queen of Zarsuela and Kundiman na si Honorata "Atang" dela Rama, National Artist for Music and Theater. Both musicals were produced by Dulaang UP.

Ngayon naman, parehong bahagi sina Franco at Ayen ng Banaag at Sikat, na dalawang Pambansang Alagad Ng Sining (National Artist) ang magkatuwang na bumuo: sina Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature (librettist) at Salvador "Badong" Bernal, National Artist for Stage Design (production designer).

Bukod sa mga National Artists, mga batikan din ang bumubuo ng produksiyon ng Banaag at Sikat: Ms. Edna Vida-Froilan (choreographer), Lucien Letaba (music composer) at Jose Estrella (director). Sa pangkalahatang pamamahala ni Fernando "Tata Nanding" Josef, Tanghalang Pilipino Artistic Director.

"Ang hirap tanggihan ng play na ito dahil... Bien Lumbera and Badong Bernal, National Artists... why not? Di ba?" pagtukoy rin ni Franco. "Even though hindi kami magkatambal ni Ayen, it's the opportunity to work with Bien Lumbera and Salvador Bernal and Jose Estrella. I'm happy with my work here. I come in and out, as a mysterious character in the first two acts. In the third act, dun talaga ako mari-reveal. Before that, sunud-sunod yung mga kanta ko."

As for Ayen Munji-Laurel, who last appeared in the GMA-7 teleserye Rosalinda and the indie movie Sigwa, music and acting in a musical play will remain a passion.

Ang Banaag at Sikat ay patuloy na mapapanood sa CCP Little Theater on August 22 and August 25-29 at 8 p.m., with 3 p.m. Sunday matinee shows.
