ABS-CBN’s 2012 rainy season station ID has the theme "Masarap ang Feeling, 'pag Ikaw ang Kapiling.” It assembles a powerhouse cast composed of stars from its afternoon block called Kapamilya Gold and its prized Primetime Bida block. Other than that, it also offers a sneak peak of loveteams and tandems that viewers can expect in future shows of the Kapamilya Network.
Toni Gonzaga provides the soundtrack with the original song “Da Best ang Feeling,” an upbeat, pop tune with lots of digital vocal enrichment. It’s a deviation from the usual melancholic and sentimental music of the “Sukob Na” song that started the tradition of ABS-CBN’s rainy day SIDs.
As this song suggests, the SID’s theme is simply all about love and being with special people as the rain falls and the cold wind blows.
It starts with the very bankable tandem of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo looking passionately at each other and ends with the the onscreen partners dancing the tango in the rain. The Bea-JLC love team gets exposure during the first 45 seconds of the clips, with a few Toni Gonzaga shots interspersed in between.
Unlike other ABS-CBN SIDs, this edition does not really have that one story that weaves all the scenes together. It’s more like random shots of lovers and group of friends laughing, playing and hugging each other in the rain.
It is a bit unusual to have the actors of Kahit Puso’y Masugatan assume their teleserye characters in the station ID. Viewers will see Andi Eigenmann crying and Iza Calzado having a fight with Jake Cuenca. Yes, it fits the lyrics, but it looks out of place. A few seconds later, Jake and Iza are shown laughing together in the SID. All the rest of the Kapamilya stars looked like they were enjoying the downpour.
Instead of a network plug, ABS-CBN’s Ulan 2012 looks like a straightforward promotion of its afternoon and primetime shows and a teaser for its upcoming programs.
Nonetheless, this Station ID will surely please fans of popular onscreen tandems in Walang Hanggan and Princess and I. Ulan 2012 gives ample kilig moments aimed at followers of the Coco Martin-Julia Montes tandem as well as the Kathryn Bernardo-Daniel Padilla teamup. Julia and Coco are shown in a tender forehead-to-forehead position while Kathryn and Daniel hug each other playfully while under the rain.
Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap, lead stars of Be Careful with My Heart, hold hands while seeking shelter from the rain.
But other than the usual rainy day scenes that ABS-CBN has been redoing every year, there are a few surprises in this year’s edition. Matteo Guidicelli, Jessy Mendiola, Matt Evans, and a short-haired Jewel Mische look stunning with their edgier and bolder looks. Their dance scenes inside the warehouse have a glossy, polished look. Same with the dance sequence of the cast of Aryana, which is comparable to scenes from the Step Up movies. Another stand-out is KC Concepcion who shows class and grace in her solo dance number.
The video goes back to John Lloyd and Bea dancing in the rain and there is no denying the chemistry of the two.
But despite the power pairing, there seems to be a lack of heart and drama in this edition, when compared to ABS-CBN’s other rainy season videos. It must be because the music did not have the usual “kurot sa puso”/sentimental mood and tone. Maybe because there is fewer variety in the locations this time. Or maybe the dance-worthy beat of the song is more associated with the fun and lively mood of the summer SIDs.
The whole video looks good, there’s no denying that. ABS-CBN has never failed to make their stars look beautiful in their station IDs.
Ulan 2012 is good, but not stellar. Not quite the same as the past ones that kept people talking and humming, days after their launch.
