Verni Varga will join OPM greats in July 17 concert at the SM Mall of Asia

Verni Varga, Basil Valdez, Joey Albert, Gino Padilla, The CompanY and Fil-British singer Charlie Green will take part in concert dubbed as OPM Hits Through the Years. It will take place on July 17 at the SMX, SM Mall of Asia.

The sexy Vernie Varga, the original Vamp, was one of the guests at the presscon of OPM Hits Through The Years held last June 15 at the 8 Spices Restaurant at Il Terrazzo located at Tomas Morato.

The concert features Verni with OPM singers Basil Valdez, Joey Albert, Gino Padilla, The CompanY and Fil-British singer Charlie Green. The concert is scheduled to take place on July 17 at the SMX, SM Mall of Asia.

Verni, who made name headlining Manila's leading nightspots, recorded the original version of the classic Kahit Isang Saglit by Louie Ocampo plus You'll Always Be My Number One, Love Me Again, and My Love, My Soul, My Everything.

"I play golf. Plus common sense lang, kung ano ang nakakataba, huwag mong kainin. Huwag mong sosobrahan, tikman mo lang," Vernie told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) when asked what is the secret of her whistle bait figure.

"I've been playing golf for five years and it's my husband Rick [Oledan] who introduced me to the game. Since he plays golf regularly, I might as well join him and play the game as well. Ayoko naman na maging golf widow. May tawag silang ganoon, eh."

Since she had been hooked on the sport, Vernie had also joined tournaments and had won championships as well. And while at the golf course, she would sometimes break into song, especially if she makes a not too good a shot.

"Magaling kasi mag-alaga si Lord at ang asawa ko kaya parang hindi ako tumatanda," said the sexy singer.

While she plays golf three times a week, Verni admits she misses doing concerts although she's kept busy most of the time doing corporate shows. "Alam mo naman na reyna ako ng mga corporate shows. But when I learned that I will be in this show, I readily accepted the offer because I would be working with very good artists. No doubt, they are among our best artists, besides, they are my friends," said Vernie.

"Lalo na si Basil, although we don't see each other, we exchange text messages. Plus the producer of this show is Viva Concerts. Eh saan ba ako galing eh di ba Blackgold? Saka 'yung ibang kasama ko sa show, I haven't worked in a long time. Si Joey [Albert], I think the last time I worked with her, parang hindi pa yata ako kasal noon. Ganoon na talaga katagal."

While she doesn't remember when was the last time she did an album, Verni disclosed that she's in the process of collecting materials (most of them her own compositions) for a new album that she's planning to release soon. "Gusto kong isama sa album ang mga own compositions ko plus some inspirational songs na akala mo parang hindi inspirational pieces pero once you listen to them, inspirational pala," she said.

What songs will she be doing in the concert? "Of course, there would be OPM numbers tapos there would be new songs na gagawin namin production numbers," said Vernie who is also excited with the idea of being directed anew by Roxanne Lapus.

"I feel excited with this concert kasi parang once in a lifetime na lang ito mangyayari, di ba? At saka nakakatuwa na kaming mga singers noong unang panahon, o sige ageless, mas feel ko ang songs noon. Siyempre iba na rin ang era ngayon kahit iba na rin ang tipo ng songs ngayon. ibang style," she said.

"I am very thankful to Boss Vic [del Rosario of Viva] for thinking of this project and for having me in it. Why would I say now to a show like this when I started my career in Boss Vic's company before [Blackgold]," she added.

While we may not always see Vernie singing on TV, the lady is not exactly out of the music scene, busy as she was with corporate shows where she also gets to work with Basil from time to time.

"It's always exciting to do concerts tapos si Roxanne Lapus pa ang director. My goodness! When you talk of Roxanne, huhugutin niya sa iyo kung anuman ang itinatago mo. She has her own way of getting the best out of you."

Vernie was teased that the reason why she's seldom seen on TV performing is because she lives luxuriously, like a queen. "That's not true. Hindi totoo iyan. Hindi. Kung alam niyo lang," she said with a chuckle."Kung may chance na maging reyna, siguro hindi ko pa rin gagampanan na maging ganoon kasi iba naman 'yung kinalakihan ko, eh. Dapat in touch ka sa reality at dapat makatotohanan ka. Hindi lang feel yung sinasabi ninyo na parang reyna ako pero thank you Lord pag dumating." Verni answered.

She says does things a regular housewife would do as well like do the household chores like cooking, keep the house, water the plants, and take care of her children.

"Reyna ako ng tahanan. Ang mga nanay naman ay reyna ng tahanan, di ba? I cook at ang paborito kong niluluto ay yung mga challenging na dishes like for example French cuisine. Pag may natikman akong luto at nagustuhan ko, I make it a point to learn how to cook it myself," Vernie added.

Verni said that she would love to be a part of regular show, like a weekly program like Party Pilipinas. "Bakit hindi, e, kita rin iyon? At saka exposure iyon" she answered.

Among the breed of new singers, who does Verni think are good?

"Si Rachelle Ann Go, magaling iyon. Si Sarah [Geronimo)], magaling iyan. 'Yung nanalo sa Channel 7 [Are You The Next Big Star?], si Frencheska Farr, magaling iyon. Unang-unang pasok ko pa lang na mag-judge doon, sabi ko ito ang mananalo. Nakikita ko pa lang ang aura niya, alam ko mananalo na siya. Magaling ang batang iyon at saka she's very versatile. At she's a total package. Maski saan ka tumingin, she's really a star."
