Grace says that FPJ's unusual "bedtime stories" helped her understand the creative process of movie production. This understanding helped her make better judgment calls when she was at the helm of the Movie and Televsion Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

"That's why when I became MTRCB chair, hindi ako mabilis matakot sa mga ganyan, e, kasi parang na-expose na ako. I also understand the creative process, that you don't dampen the enthusiasm of a director to create something artistic or to interpret something.

"But we have a responsibility as parents. Ayaw mo namang makita ng mga anak mo 'yong duguan, mga gano'n, so may konting pigil. 'Yong dad ko naman, pag nagkuwento e hindi naman niya 'kinukuwento 'yong mga sexual scenes or 'yong mga ano."

Grace remembers that FPJ didn't pressure her to be the best in school. It was her mom Susan who kept a close watch on her academic grades. "My dad wouldn't pressure me in school. He'd be happy if I would have awards pero my mom was like, ‘Ano? Bumagsak ka sa sewing?' Strict ang mom ko pagdating sa mga gano'n."

Grace—seen here in this undated photo with FPJ and his long-time friend, former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada—recalls one problem she had with her father when she was a teenager: "When I would make paalam, ‘Can I go out at night? Can I go on a date?', unreasonable siya. He would say, ‘You go home at ten p.m.' Diyos ko naman, anong party naman 'yon, di ba, kung hanggang ten lang? Ma-e-enjoy mo ba 'yon?"

Grace would always turn to her mom for help. "My mom would say, ‘Okey lang 'yan, honey. Hayaan mo na, alas dose or ala una. Meron namang kasama 'yan.' So naging close kami ng mom ko."

FPJ was the kind of father who avoided discussions that were emotional, especially if they had something to do with Grace's adoption. So, for a time, he avoided the subject, thinking that by not talking about it, his daughter would not find out. What he didn't know was that Susan had already talked about it with Grace when she was in grade school. That's why when FPJ finally mustered the courage to open up about the "truth," his one-on-one with his daughter was, as Grace puts it, "anticlimactic."

"I think it was my 16th birthday. My dad was a little tipsy, and he wanted to talk to me about that. I was like, ‘I know it already.' Parang sabi niya, ‘What?!' Sabi ko, ‘How can you not know that I've known for a long time? I mean everybody knows!' I guess he knew, but he was in denial."

FPJ rarely showed his angry side to his daughter. Grace recalls that the only time her dad expressed his anger was when she got married to Neil at the Santuario de San Jose in Greenhills on July 27, 1991, barely three months after she graduated from college.

"Pikon na pikon 'yong dad ko na bagong graduate ako, nag-asawa ako agad, e. Parang pangarap niya sa akin, mag-law-school pa ako. Pero wala namang maisumbat, kasi ang usapan namin, ‘You finish your education,' which I did naman. Pinatunayan ko sa parents ko na kaya naming maging independent."

Grace reveals she was closer to FPJ than to Susan when she was a kid. "When I was young, I was super close to my dad, 'cause my dad's super karinyoso, ganyan-ganyan."

Grace became close to her mom when she reached her teenage years, mainly because FPJ became a strict, protective father. "I could talk to my mom more because I was so scared of my dad."

Grace took her oath of office as the chairman of the MTRCB from PNoy in 2010. That same day, vice-chairman Emmanuel "Maning" Borlaza and 23 board members also took their oath of office at the Rizal Hall of Malacañang Palace. Direk Maning was named acting chairman after Grace filed her certificate of candidacy for senator in October 2012. On November 28, 2012, Atty. Eugenio "Toto" Villareal, who was also a board member during Grace's term, was formally named the new censors chief.
