Joey de Leon has this tough-jester reputation—someone who banks on his already legendary status to bully the competition around.
"Hindi ako nakikipag-away. Ako nga ang inaaway, e," he argued during the press conference of his latest record under EMI Philippines titled Kagat Labi held at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas, Pasig City.
Joey, as we all know, had his share of infamous verbal confrontations in the past, plus a couple of run-ins with local censors brought by his irreverent rumor.
When he joined Startalk, many feared that Joey might use the program to loosen up his already sharp tongue even more. But so far, the top comedian never really went beyond addressing his rival Willie Revillame during the height of the "Wilyonaryo" controversy.
Being a host of a showbiz talk show doesn't necessarily mean intruding too much or acting like a true-blue tsismoso, he says.
"Hindi ako nakikialam," he clarified. "Nag-i-interview lang naman ako, pero ‘di ako nakikialam katulad nina Lolit. 'Di ba, napapaaway?"
YEARLY EVENT. Every year, during Holy Week, Joey and the entire Eat Bulaga! team make it a point to take a break from their usual funny selves to do a special episode that would impart important life lessons to the viewers.
"Panata namin ‘yon e," revealed Joey. "'Yong una namin si Lino Brocka pa [ang nagdirek], ‘yong nagsimula kami."
It is also a chance for the public to see the funny trio of Tito, Vic, and Joey do serious drama. So far, no one has raised an eyebrow over their brave attempt to tone down their comic side at least once a year.
"Ilang taon na naming ginagawa ‘yan. Matanda pa [ang Eat Bulaga!] dun sa magre-react e, 29 years na kami, e," remarked Joey animatedly.
Like most celebrities and hardworking professionals, Joey candidly admits making the most of the Lenten break by going out-of-town or overseas. "Usually bakasyon. Iba-ibang lugar," he confided.
But no matter where he is, Joey never forgets to pay God a visit and thank Him for all the blessings both in his personal and professional life.
"Nagsisimba ako ‘pag [Good] Friday. Kahit saan akong lugar naghahanap ako ng simbahan," Joey said.
