Manny Pacquiao's Midas touch spares no one—and that includes viewership data and figures.
According to the latest study conducted by AGB Nielsen Media Research, Philippines, Pacquiao's recently concluded bout with Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez last Sunday, March 16 (Manila time), figured prominently in the ratings game as expected by the media research firm. The well-anticipated boxing rematch was held at the Events Center of the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, U.S.A.
The title match—in which Pacquiao won via split decision to secure the World Boxing Council Super Featherweight Crown—was viewed by an average of 49 percent of Philippine homes.
Based on the latest (and still unofficial) overnight ratings report gathered by AGB Nielsen, the match up accumulated a rating of 48.5 percent in Metro Manila and "its surrounding suburbs."
The media research firm was also anticipating a much larger turnout of viewers in the Visayas and Mindanao region. Manny is a native of General Santos, South Cotabato in Mindanao.
AGB Nielsen Media Research keeps track of Manny's ring exploits using its Mega Manila TV Audience Measurement [Mega TAM] and the National Urban TV Audience Measurement [NUTAM] system.
In a letter forwarded to PEP [Philippine Entertainment Portal] earlier today, March 19, AGB Nielsen took note: "Among MegaTAM Households, the Pacquiao-Marquez fight, which aired on GMA 7, ranked fourth in terms of TV ratings [48.5%]. The Pacquiao-Larios match that was aired in ABS-CBN on July 2006 rated at 54.4% and is still the highest rating Pacquiao match. However, the Pacquiao-Marquez rematch rated higher compared to their first fight that aired on RPN on May 2004 with an average rating of 33.9% among Metro Manila homes."
The NUTAM results on the other hand showed that Pacquiao's fight with Marco Antonio Barrera held on October 2007 is still the biggest draw of all with 49.7 percent rating. Trailing closely behind is the Pacquiao-Barrera bout conducted last March 16. The said match generated a rating of 49 percent.
