Mismong si Ruffa Gutierrez ay nagulat sa paglabas ng balita tungkol sa tension-filled night out nila ng mga kaibigang sina Pops Fernandez, isang non-showbiz friend na nagngangalang Josie, Marjorie Barretto, at ang sister nito na si Gretchen Barretto kamakailan sa isang posh restaurant sa Dusit Hotel sa Makati City.
Kahapon, June 17, ay unang naiulat dito sa PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang naganap na eksena sa nasabing restaurant (read related article ). Ayon sa account ng ilang nakasaksi, hindi diumano tinanggap ng swiping machine ang credit card ni Gretchen nang mag-offer itong bayaran ang bill.
Sa galit daw ni Greta ay sinabihan nito ang waiter ng, "That cannot be, we own the bank. Tawagan mo ang bangko." Pero dahil araw ng Linggo at walang pasok ang mga bank employees ay wala na ngang nagawa ang lahat. Para matapos na ang usapan ay inako na lang daw ni Ruffa ang pagbabayad sa kanilang kinain na sinasabing pumatak ng P4,300.
RUFFA'S TREAT. Kanina, June 18, sa press conference na inihanda ng Belo Medical Group, Inc. para kay Ruffa sa Annabel's restaurant sa Tomas Morato, Quezon City, ay hindi na nakaiwas si Ruffa sa mga tanong kaugnay sa balitang lumabas involving Gretchen.
"The one with Gretchen, I mean I promised her kanina that I wouldn't comment about it kasi nangyari po ‘yon sa isang private setting. So nagulat po kami kung paano lumabas sa Internet. Siguro naikuwento ni Gretchen o naikuwento ni Pops o naikuwento ko to some close people, pero hindi po namin akalain na lalabas po ‘yon sa diyaryo o Internet. So I guess it's best to ask Gretchen about it because baka sabihin niya na I'm using it for publicity," paliwanag ni Ruffa matapos ang presscon proper.
Para kay Ruffa, wala naman daw masama kung siya man o ibang kaibigan naman ni Gretchen ang manlibre. Kung tutuusin nga raw ay maliit pa ang halagang P4,300 kumpara sa mga nagastos ni Gretchen noon para sa kanyang mga close friends.
"Yeah, wala namang problema. I mean, how many times naman po na si Gretchen po ang nanlibre sa ‘kin?" depensa ni Ruffa. "So I think as a friend, okey lang naman na paminsan-minsan, ibang friends like me or Pops ang manlibre naman sa kanya, di ba?"
Inamin ni Ruffa na nabahala siya nang mabalitaang lumabas na nga ang naturang insidente sa publiko. Baka raw kasi paghinalaan siya ni Gretchen na siya ang nagkalat ng kuwento sa ilang kaibigang reporters.
"Medyo na-bother ako kasi baka ako maging suspect, di ba? Ng paglagay sa Internet, which is hindi naman talaga. I know a lot of things and never ko talaga ikinukuwento. That's why I think I'm a good friend because kahit sinasabihan ako ng sikreto, three days later nakalimutan ko na kung ano'ng ikinuwento sa ‘kin!" bulalas ng bagong Belo endorser.
In-assure naman daw ni Gretchen ang kaibigan na walang dapat ikabahala sa gitna ng kontrobersiya dulot nga ng hotel restaurant incident.
"But for me naman, walang problema. So sabi naman ni Gretchen sa akin through text was like, ‘Ruffa, don't worry about it. You know we had a great night.' And siyempre, nagkaroon ng konting drama pero naayos naman. So walang problema."
Bagamat hindi diretsong pinabulaanan ni Ruffa kung totoo ngang sumugod ang longtime live-in partner ni Gretchen na si Tonyboy Cojuangco sa restaurant, parang inamin na rin ito ng magandang aktres nang tanungin kung totoo nga bang nagkaroon ng argument sa pagitan ni Gretchen at ng business tycoon sa isang sulok ng restaurant.
"Yeah, na-stress lang kami ng konti," sagot ni Ruffa. "Pero at the end of the night, naayos naman siya."
