The fire that claimed the life of Chokoleit's mother, Mrs. Erlinda Aguilar, made the comedian reflect on his experiences with his number one fan and critic. Chokoleit was in Boracay when news about his mother's tragic death last April 9 reached him. (Click here for the related story.)
In an interview with The Buzz, in Boracay, Chokoleit said that no words could comfort him now.
"Alam ko naman siyempre na si Mama, matanda na, at hinahanda ko na yung ganun. Hindi naman siya sakitin at naospital ever since. She's never been ill," said Chokoleit. His mom was even an athletic person.
"Na-text ko siya, e," added Chokoleit. "Lahat ng galaw ko ina-update ko siya. Natanong niya na baka sangkot na ako sa gulo sa Boracay. Natawa ako sa text niya dahil may advice about Lenten at magsimba ako."
Then he smiled and said, "Tapos hihirit 'yan na send-an ko daw siya ng [cell phone] load, ganyan."
The comedian will never forget the last text messages they had. "Paggising ko, siyempre check ng cell phone. Nag-text siya dalawang beses. Nag-thank you siya na nag-send ako ng load sa kanya at sabi niya na magsimba ako."
Chokoleit related the events that happened when he found out about the accident.
"Yung sister ko tumawag at sumisigaw ako na huwag silang magbiro! Saang ospital, saan siya? Ano ba nangyari? Napaka-unusual kasi for my sister na usually text lang, ngayon tumatawag. So, kinakabahan ako. I was hoping against hope na minor accident lang, pero..."
After a pause, a teary-eyed Chokoleit continued, "Ayun pala, nasunog yung part nung bahay. Sabi ko, huwag isipin dahil madali lang [i-repair]. Sabi ko, 'Si Mama okay lang ba?' Sinabi niya kasi na umalis daw sila at si Mama, siesta time niya at nag-lock ng kuwarto. So, before she was saved, nag-suffocate na siya."
It was hard for Chokoleit to accept his mother's death, especially now that he has achieved his goal to buy her a house in Manila this year.
"Sino ba naman ako mag-question?" Chokoleit said. "Ang sa akin lang, sana na-enjoy sana [ni Mama]. So siguro, in that way, ayaw ni Mama na mag-worry ako na magkasakit siya nang matagal at ma-bother sa trabaho ko. Siguro hinintay lang niya ako maging okay."
Chokoleit broke down, uttering, "Wala nang mag-text sa akin kung ano trabaho ko ngayon sa TV..."
