Pia and Maxene Magalona continue their fight against cancer.
The widow and the daughter of the late Master Rapper Francis Magalona work together to promote cervical cancer vaccine to fight the second most common cancer among women.
In an interview, Maxene said that before her father died, he expressed his intention to become a spokesperson in the fight against leukemia. Unfortunately, this did not happen because Francis succumbed to acute myelogenous leukemia on March 6.
So, by doing this campaign ad, Maxene said, "Sana by us doing this, parang naituloy na rin namin yung gusto sanang gawin din ni Papa—maging kami naman ang spokesperson for cervical cancer."
The 22-year-old actress added, "Also, I'm very proud na napapasama ako sa mga ganitong project kasi gusto ko talagang maging role model. Gusto kong ipakita na kayang gumawa ng difference ng kasing age ko. I mean, I'm still very young dahil nakakagawa ako and nakakatulong ako para maipakita sa tao kung ano yung dapat gawin."
BONDING TIME WITH MOMMY PIA. Aside from fulfilling one of the dreams of her dad, Maxene also considered the shoot for the said TV commercial as her bonding time with her mom.
"Excited talaga ako na itong TVC [TV commercial], bonding namin ni Mama, yung friendship namin, as well as relationship namin as mother and daughter," she related to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal).
She also mentioned that with this commercial the public would see how close she is to her mother.
"Napapakita namin na ganito kami ka-close even with these topics regarding cervical cancer—you know, these things na kailangan magpa-screen, kailangang magpa-ob-gyne para magpa-pap smear. Very open kami sa isa't isa and thankful ako na nabigyan kami ng ganitong project, very comfortable ako sa kanya."
Maxene reiterated how this TV commercial gave her a chance to have a quality time with Mommy Pia.
"Na-miss ko siya kasi hindi ko na siya nakakasama sa trabaho ko and this is our first time working together in an advocacy. So, I'm very excited na makita na 'to ng mga tao kasi wala lang, nagkakatuwaan lang kami kanina and very fun talaga," she said.
Meanwhile, as a mother, Pia expressed gladness for the achievement of her first daughter with Francis.
"I'm proud of Maxene, the way she's developing as a youth leader. So ang reaction lagi sa kanya is ganun nga, parang it's very natural for her to show a good example and she's very consistent. Nakita ko rin yun sa ibang kids ko, sa pagka-relate ng public sa kanila. I'm sure tuwang-tuwa yung dad nila sa kung ano 'yong dine-develop nila."
Pia and Maxene's TV ad for the cervical cancer advocacy will be seen first on Mother's Day, May 10. This is a part of GlaxoSmithKline's awareness campaign about cervical cancer vaccines.
