At the press conference for Regine Velasquez's new show Are You The Next Big Star (which will air on May 16, Saturday, after Pinoy Records) GMA's AVP for Magazine/Musical/Variety Shows Darling de Jesus revealed that they have taped a birthday special for Regine titled Roots to Riches.
"The special will be aired on May 24. It's a very special show going back to Regine's roots from her amateur singing days in Malolos, Bulacan up to where she is now," says Ms. Darling.
PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) interviewed Asia's Songbird to get more details about her special.
"Nakakaiyak! Super research-to-the max," Regine says of how the show dug up her past. "I mean, everyone knows my story. But not this... I mean, maraming untold [stories]. Yung sa dagat, wala pa yun. Meron pang iba."
Regine was also referring to the now-legendary "dagat training" she got from her father Mang Jerry Velasquez, who had her immersed neck-deep in water while singing, supposedly to make her lungs stronger.
THE RIVAL. What Regine was excited to tell about is how the team managed to track down the only girl who kept beating her in singing contests back in her amateur singing days.
"Si Eva Castillo. Siya yung laging lumalampaso sa akin sa mga singing contests," tells the excited Regine. "Nakakaiyak ang story niya. Yung kung ano na ang buhay niya. You have to see how she ended up and how I ended up. Nakakaloka! Nakakalungkot din at the same time, nakakatuwa... May pamilya na siya ngayon. Makikita n'yo yung result ng mga pinili naming path. Kasi kaming dalawa, we really started from nothing. May duet kami. 'Tapos we both sang our contest pieces..."
The special Roots to Riches covers the Songbird's climb from her humble start as a budding singer joining every amateur contest in her town in Malabon to her Bagong Kampeon days and to where she is now.
"It's more of the...going back to the people I met. Yung mga taong nakilala ko, yung mga taong tumulong sa akin kung nasaan ako ngayon. It's very inspiring!" Regine beams.
She adds, "Sana maraming makapanood. I realized na my life story is very inspiring pala. Especially to those young people who aspire to one day become a star."
