Last July 6, people were shocked to learn about the strong words uttered by folk singer Freddie Aguilar against fellow singers Charice and Arnel Pineda. The OPM singer told PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that these internationally renowned singers just prove that Filipinos are "monkeys" who merely imitate what they see around them. During the July 12 episode of The Buzz, Arnel Pineda, lead singer of the international group Journey, gave his reaction to Freddie's criticism.
He said, "Alam mo, in a way, I understand where he is coming from, about being patriotic. But at the same time, I think medyo nag-overboard siya nung sinabi niya yung the word 'monkey,' kasi kapwa niya kami Pilipino and we are only trying to do our best para maging kapaki-pakinabang din para sa bansa and para sa kababayan natin. Pero despite the fact na sinabi n'ya yun, I still respect him as an artist."
In his previous interview, Ka Freddie also mentioned that Gary Valenciano was merely copying the style of Michael Jackson.
Gary could not even mention the word 'monkey' as he pointed out, "It is not true that the Filipino is what you just mentioned what the Filipino is. I think that Charice is...[it's] just stepping stone, nabigyan siya ng pagkakataon. But I think now that she is recording an album, it's just a matter of time that her originality begins to come out. I'm sorry but I don't agree."
The Buzz contacted Ka Freddie once more so he could clarify his earlier statements.
The veteran singer then gave his message to the 17-year-old singer: "Charice, magaling kang singer, pero mas bibilib ako sa 'yo kung kakanta ka ng sariling atin."
Ka Freddie once again issued a challenge to all Pinoy singers.

Don't you think na hindi din masakit sa akin for Mariah to call Regine a monkey? Of course I am furios too!!! Ang sa akin lang, the more we go back and emphasize and make issues of what Mariah said lalo lang naproprove ni Mariah na tama siya kasi ang mga unggoy walang alam gawin sa maghapon kundi magingay ang at magkalat! Why can't we just all learn to move on at iwanan ang mga sama ng loob at mga pagtatanim ng galit ~ hindi lang pangit sa buhay yan kundi baka ikamatay mo pa sa sakit sa puso!
i guess, most of the filipino people are misguided. kung ano-ano nalang ang iniisip, hindi nag iisip ng tama.
Mariah Carey was just being BITTER because she may realize that someone in the Philippines can sing her songs BETTER than her. Plus, we are not the only country in this world that local singers sing foreign songs, it just happened that Filipinos are GREAT singers which made Mariah insecure and made that comment. Lastly, intelligent people will never give too much emphasis from what Mariah said because it was really STUPID and non-sense!!!
i remember there was an instance when mariah carey compared regine v. to a monkey but that was several years ago.
nakikita yan kung paano pinahahalagahan ang kultura at pinapakita sa buong mundo.
kahit anong sasabihin ng ibang tao, alam mo sa sarili mo na eto ka, this is what i am.
true blooded filipino. and this is my culture, eto ang mga gawain namin. etc.. etc..
there's no value and dignity sa mga kultura natin, kase, pinoy ka, ikaw din ang kumukutya sa sariling kultura.
mga kapwa pilipino, gaano nyo kamahal ang ating bayan?, basing on the respect of values, cultures, and the people itself.
Kung totoo man na sinabi ni Mariah Carey na UNGGOY ang mga Filipino dahil gaya gaya.. PATUNAYAN YAN NI MR.AGUILAR kasi malaking kalaspatangan yan sa lahi natin.
