Singer Christian Bautista confessed feeling nervous last November 7 during Sarah Geronimo's solo concert held at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
Christian and Sarah performed a duet of the Jose Mari Chan classic single, "Please Be Careful With My Heart," with no less than Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez watching from her seat in the jampacked crowd. Regine was Jose Mari's singing partner in the original recorded version.
The song became an instant hit when it was released as a single in the late '80s. "Please Be Careful With My Heart" was lifted from Chan's best-selling album, Constant Change that featured other OPM gems like "Beautiful Girl" and "Can't We Start Over Again."
PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) spoke with Christian minutes before a press conference held yesterday, November 16, at Max's Fried Chicken restaurant on Roces Avenue, Quezon City.
The presscon was tendered by music channel MYX for its upcoming MYX MO event to be staged on November 26 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.
Christian recounted that Sarah informed him beforehand of Regine's attendance that evening.
"Medyo kinabahan pero mas na-inspired din to do better. Na-inspired na mas galingan pa 'yong pagkanta," Christian said.
Much to Christian and Sarah's relief, Regine complemented their performance during a chance meeting backstage after the concert.
"Maayos naman daw 'yong pagkakanta," smiled Christian with obvious pride, "she said it was very, very nice."
BRINGING CHAN TO YOUNG LISTENERS. Recent months have seen Christian paying tribute to Jose Mari Chan through the renowned composer's popular songs. In fact, the 28-year-old balladeer's latest album under Universal Records is an all-out tribute to the prolific Chan.
Romance Revisited: The Love Songs of Jose Mari Chan reportedly reached platinum sales a few weeks following its release last October. Christian's latest record is his first with Universal Records after severing ties with Warner Music Philippines.
Christian keeps modest expectations for his latest album. After all, Jose Mari Chan's two records have already achieved the prestigious and elusive Diamond Award. Still, he hopes that Romance Revisited would introduce Chan's masterpieces to a new generation of listeners.
"I owe a lot, siyempre, to Mr. Jose Mari Chan kasi he allowed me to sing his songs," said Christian, adding that he constantly updates his music idol on the progress of the record.
Jose Mari Chan's praise for Romance Revisited both humbled and elated the young singer: "Thank you also for bringing new wings to my songs."
