Ai-Ai delas Alas of the ensemble comedy film Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat (top frame, left) is in the running with Sarah Geronimo of You Changed My Life (upper right frame) for the title of Box-Office Queen. In My Life, starring (bottom frame) John Lloyd Cruz, Vilma Santos and Luis Manzano, is ranked as the third highest film of Star Cinema.

The films of Star Cinema for 2009 earned a total of P1.135 billion, according to figures provided by ABS-CBN's film production outfit. PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) met with the Star Cinema executives of Star Cinema—Star AdProm director Roxy Liquigan and Star Cinema & TV Synergy Specialist Mico del Rosario—earlier today, January 15, at the ABS-CBN compound to discuss how their films did last year.

You Changed My Life, the Sarah Geronimo-John Lloyd Cruz-starrer, was once again a Valentine hit with its gross of P208.8 million. Star Cinema has promised that the love story of Laida Magtalas and Miggy Montenegro will continue, with Cathy Garcia-Molina still at the helm, but they have no definite date yet for its release.

Given the fact that Ai-Ai delas Alas starred in three blockbuster hits last year—Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat, BFF (Best Friends Forever), and Ang Tanging Pamilya—there is a big possibility that she will be hailed as the Box-Office Queen. However, that will depend on the criteria set by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and whether they will count the gross of Ang Tanging Ina as part of the 2009 movies, or if it should be classified as part of 2008. The three films of Ai-Ai earned a total of P374.5 million.

Del Rosario pointed out that even though Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat was part of the 2008 Metro Manila Film Fest, they still consider this Ai-Ai delas Alas starrer as part of their 2009 lineup. This is because even though the film opened on Christmas day, it had a much longer screening period during the month of January 2009.

Last year, Sarah was hailed as the Box-Office Queen by the GMMSFI for her blockbuster hit A Very Special Love, while her leading man John Lloyd Cruz was named Box-Office King.

Here are the box-office figures provided by Star Cinema on its past films:

1. You Changed My Life (Star Cinema/Viva) - P208.8 million

Cast: Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz
            Director: Cathy Garcia-Molina

Cast: Angelica Panganiban, Gabby Concepcion, Derek Ramsay, Kim Chiu
            Director: Laurice Guillen

5. BFF (Best Friends Forever) - P102.5 million
Cast: Sharon Cuneta, Ai-Ai delas Alas
            Director:  Wenn Deramas

Cast: Maricel Soriano, Mika dela Cruz
            Director: Chito Roño

             Director: Laurenti Dyogi

8. Love Me Again: Land Down Under - P72.1 million
            Cast: Angel Locsin, Piolo Pascual
            Director: Rory Quintos

9. Ang Tanging Pamilya: A Marry Go Round - P72 million
Cast: Ai-Ai delas Alas, Joseph Estrada
             Director: Wenn Deramas

10. Villa Estrella - P50.08 million

              Director: Rico Ilarde

If she were managed by viva or star cinema malamang the likes of Aga Muhlach ang itatapat sa kanya. Otherwise hindi nya kayang hilain ang isang pelikula on her own. Unfortunately Marian has a lot to do pa talaga to prove that she's more than just a tv star and her fans don't really come out to pay to see her movies.

BASHA of One More Chance : 'Popoy ako nalang, ako nalang ulet'

POPOY : 'You have me at my best, she have me at my worst, and you chose to break my heart.'

MIGGY : 'close the door. close the door when you leave!'

-sundance! at powerhug, sinpng may di alam?

Personal Analysis why Marian Rivera's movies, as of late, did not do well in the box office. 1. Overexposure in TV- why watch her in movies which costs Php120.00, when you can watch her in Tv for free? 2. Fans are mostly masa-it is the reality that many of the masa fans cannot afford to watch a movie. 3. Cast in a wrong role- Marian is identified as Marimar, damstrel in distress, rags to riches love story. Producers should stick to this type of plot/role. 4. Leading actor is not a crowd drawer- please, Dingdong Dantes has been a dud in the box office. Marian should be paired off with an established actor or a certified box office success such as Richard Guiterrez. I recall that their valentine movie reached 100 million. I think they will duplicate that feat.
