There was only joy and no pain when The Hurt Locker won the Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards, or more popularly known as the Oscars.

Before the announcement of winners, The Hurt Locker had nine nominations, which tied with the blockbuster film Avatar as the most nominated film this year. Aside from Avatar, The Hurt Locker also beat eight other films for the top prize: The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up In The Air.

The Hurt Locker, which follows the story of a United States Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq war, won a total of six awards. Avatar, on the other hand, had three.

The 82nd Oscar Awards was held earlier today, March 8 (March 7, U.S. time), at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The awarding ceremony was hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow was named Best Director and now has the distinction of being the first female director to ever win an Oscar Award. Bigelow's competition in this category includes her ex-husband James Cameron who helmed Avatar.

There were no major surprises in the acting category. The recipients are all first-time winners.

Jeff Bridges, 60, won the Best Actor trophy for his role as a country- music songwriter in Crazy Heart. Bridges has been nominated in the Oscars five times, but this is his first win.

America's sweetheart Sandra Bullock was named Best Actress for her portrayal of real-life character Leigh Anne Tuohy in the Best Picture nominee The Blind Side. Bullock was able to beat, among others, Meryl Streep who got her 16th Academy Awards nomination for her role as real-life chef Julia Child in Julie & Julia.

Interestingly, a night before the Oscars, Bullock was also "awarded" Worst Actress in the Razzies Awards for her film All About Steve. Bullock became the first actress to win the Best Actress and Worst Actress in the same year.

As expected, Austrian actor Christoph Waltz and comedienne Mo'Nique won the supporting acting honors. Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Nazi officer in Inglourious Basterds, while Mo'Nique was named Best Supporting Actress for her role as an abusive mother in Precious.

Writing honors went to Mark Boal of The Hurt Locker and Geoffrey Fletcher of Precious for Best Adapted Screenplay.
