There was only joy and no pain when The Hurt Locker won the Best Picture at the 82nd Academy Awards, or more popularly known as the Oscars.
Before the announcement of winners, The Hurt Locker had nine nominations, which tied with the blockbuster film Avatar as the most nominated film this year. Aside from Avatar, The Hurt Locker also beat eight other films for the top prize: The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, Up, and Up In The Air.
The Hurt Locker, which follows the story of a United States Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq war, won a total of six awards. Avatar, on the other hand, had three.
The 82nd Oscar Awards was held earlier today, March 8 (March 7, U.S. time), at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. The awarding ceremony was hosted by Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow was named Best Director and now has the distinction of being the first female director to ever win an Oscar Award. Bigelow's competition in this category includes her ex-husband James Cameron who helmed Avatar.
There were no major surprises in the acting category. The recipients are all first-time winners.
Jeff Bridges, 60, won the Best Actor trophy for his role as a country- music songwriter in Crazy Heart. Bridges has been nominated in the Oscars five times, but this is his first win.
America's sweetheart Sandra Bullock was named Best Actress for her portrayal of real-life character Leigh Anne Tuohy in the Best Picture nominee The Blind Side. Bullock was able to beat, among others, Meryl Streep who got her 16th Academy Awards nomination for her role as real-life chef Julia Child in Julie & Julia.
Interestingly, a night before the Oscars, Bullock was also "awarded" Worst Actress in the Razzies Awards for her film All About Steve. Bullock became the first actress to win the Best Actress and Worst Actress in the same year.
As expected, Austrian actor Christoph Waltz and comedienne Mo'Nique won the supporting acting honors. Waltz won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Nazi officer in Inglourious Basterds, while Mo'Nique was named Best Supporting Actress for her role as an abusive mother in Precious.
Writing honors went to Mark Boal of The Hurt Locker and Geoffrey Fletcher of Precious for Best Adapted Screenplay.

i'm very happr for sandra bullock winning the best actress award... i haven't seen the blind side but for sure is one of the movies that i must... overall the oscar this year was grade A. the two host were funny and the dancers were absolutely amazing... i'm glad that they cut off times for giving a speech... and the show started earl which i really like coz who wants to stay up till 11pm on a sunday and go to work tomorrow morning... so the timing was very good...
I BSB am proud to be a woman! uh huh!
...I had a fabulous time at the governor's ball!

any director, yes. even cameron can do a film like that or he can do much better than that.
I hope you have watched The Hurt Locker.
The movie Blind Side is outstanding it warmth my heart. I was so touched I cried countless times while watching this film. And Sandra's acting is very very convincing. Keep it up Sandy... more to come.
I just hope Oscar didn't make Kathryn win just because she's the first woman ever nominated and it's National Women's Day...I'm sure Kathryn would like to win because of her work as a director
Judges at the Oscar's should realize that movies like Avatar is our future. I am not surprised if they don't take that because judges at the Oscar's are old people.
5. HELEN MIRREN....really good though
4. SANDRA BULLOCK....magaling din siya pero mas may magaling sa kanya last year...
3. GABOUREY SIDIBE....hands down best performance ever for a first-starrer role....
2. CAREY MULLIGAN...napanood niyo na guys AN EDUCATION? grabe si CAREY DUN! as in! galing galing!
1. MERYL STREEP....the best performance of the year by an actress!
dapat last year panalo rin siya for DOUBT eh!
kaasar ACADEMY!
CONGRATS HURT LOCKER!
esp. KATHRYN BIGELOW!
FIRST WOMAN DIRECTOR EVER WIN!
DESERVING UNG FILM TO WIN...
kaya lang personal bets ko last year INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS tsaka UP IN THE AIR....
kaasar talo UP IN THE AIR sa ADAPTED...
eh walang wala namn screenplay ng PRECIOUS SA screenplay ng UP IN THE AIR...
hehehhe.....
CONGRATS SA LAHAT!
TALO MAN O PANALO!
Sandra bet ko kasi after the worst actress award for All about Steve from Razzie na justify nya na they were wrong. Meryl streep got 2 oscars na and been nominated more than any actress, helen mirren too.. di rin makuha ni Sidibe yung votes ng academy and sandra deserves an award after those successful movies she had. im a huge huge fan of Sandra and Jesse.
