Plagiarism accusations against Manny Pangilinan pile up

The controversy surrounding businessman Manny Pangilinan continues with the latest reports on the Internet that his past speeches also contained plagiarized passages.

Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan's controversial speech delivered last month during a commencement exercise may have not been an isolated event.

Still reeling from the "plagiarism" incident stemming from accusations that Pangilinan borrowed passages from existing speeches of well-known personalities, latest postings circulating in cyberspace indicate the same offense supposedly committed by the businessman since 2007.

Some of those recently cited were Pangilinan's address given separately at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (2007), 8th Asian Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (2009), and Ateneo's Rizal Library (2010).

According to a Facebook entry posted by Katrina Stuart Santiago, Pangilinan's speeches curiously contained notable similarities with those of Theodore Roosevelt, Martin Luther King Jr., and Barack Obama.

The entire issue started after comparisons between the content of his Ateneo commencement address and speeches previously delivered by Oprah Winfrey, Conan O' Brien, and J.K. Rowling were posted on the Internet.

Pangilinan immediately apologized for the incident and offered to resign from his post as one of Ateneo's board of trustees. The incident brought him "deep personal embarrassment," he stated.

Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres along with the other board members rejected Pangilinan's resignation.

"The Board accepts Mr. Pangilinan's apology as the appropriate response to this unfortunate incident. However, the unanimous decision of the Board is not to accept Mr. Pangilinan's resignation. It expresses full confidence in his leadership as Chairman," Nebres said in an official statement.

the moment someone or in this situation, MVP, entrusted the making of his speech to his assistants, he shud be aware of the benefits and the risks that go along with it. once he delivers it, it becomes his OWN. therefore he takes full responsibility for any repercussions after.

Hello! Thank you for your response. Imitation IS the greatest form of flattery but you have to give credit to the inventor! That's why I'm a firm supporter of patent/copyright laws.

    what's your take on this?

i don't think he wrote the speech himself. Someone of his stature would have few personal assistants working for him doing various jobs so he can attend to more pressing matters

our big boss ganyan eh. On few occassions, minutes before he steps on the platform, his aides hand him his speech, all written and prepared for by them

siguro yung aide ni manny, tried to come up with something impressive and decided ah okay, my boss is far too busy to even notice these things. He will be wowed and I get a pat on the back

MVP may not have been scrutinising his own speech but unbeknownst to him, there are vigilant and clever filipinos out there who have been busy doing their homeworks...

There is nothing wrong with using other people's work - BUT YOU MUST ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SOURCE. eg. if Mr. Pangilinan wanted to quote Oprah Winfrey then he should have said in his speech... eg. Reflective of Oprah Winfrey's thoughts during her recent visit to South Africa blah blah is this, that etc.
    OR
Contrary to Martin Luther King's famous Million Man March speech blah blah.. etc..

Plagiarism is a heavy offence in any academic institutions but obviously not in Ateneo! This move by their board will taint this university's reputation. A POSSIBLE consequence of this unwise move is that local and international employers may have an unfavourable impression of job candidates from Ateneo.

hay naku ... yan ang problema ng sobrang daming laws - what's so big deal kung sabihin mo ang sinabi na ng iba?? - kung ang message na kinopya mo ay makakatulong para makarating sa isipan ng nakararami - what's so bad about it. Example: - mga katoliko dyan sa tabi tabi - ilang milyon ba ang nag rorosaryo sa isang araw - same wording, same message, amen.
