"Catholic na ako!" exclaimed Charice Pempengco after her baptism and confirmation held yesterday, May 22, at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Pasig City.

Clad in a white dress, she and her brother Carl were formally welcomed into the Catholic Church by Bishop Francisco San Diego, who presided over the ceremony. The rite was attended by 23 pairs of godparents—which included ABS-CBN's big bosses Gabby Lopez and Charo Santos-Concio, ABS-CBN Global's Raffy Lopez, Star Cinema's Malou Santos, Kapamilya hosts Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino-Yap, columnist-host Ricky Lo, broadcaster Karen Davila, TV Patrol World anchor Julius Babao and wife Tintin Bersola, radio host Jobert Sucaldito, Dra. Vicki Belo and director Lauren Dyogi, to name a few.

One of the most powerful women in the planet, Oprah Winfrey, topped Charice's ninangs list. But due to her busy schedule, the media mogul sent a TV crew to cover the event of "the most talented girl in the world."

World-famous producer-songwriter David Foster was also a ninong, but he too had to be represented by proxy during the baptism rites of his "newest baby."

To those who were wondering: Why only now?

Charice's mom Raquel and her kids used to be members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), which is the religion of Charice's dad, Ricky Pempengco.

After she and Ricky separated, Raquel wanted her kids to be baptized in Catholic rites, but "we were not a complete family," she said in an interview. The secondary reason was, "wala ring pera noon."

IT WAS ALSO CHARICE'S BIRTHDAY PARTY. And now that Charice's life is overflowing with blessings, the international singing sensation is brimming with gratitude.

Instead of holding a lavish party for her 18th birthday, which was last May 10, she decided to spend it with 500 children, who were lucky to receive gifts, and hear the celebrant sing the a cappella version of her hit single "Pyramid" and her rendition of Michael Jackson's "We Are the World."

Charice was very happy, and couldn't ask for anything more. "Ang dami-dami ko na pong blessings," she said.

My co-worker who is African-Amercian said that she is 100 sure that Charice will perform in the Grammy's and will get a nomination, so to the one that said OA, get over your crab mentality. If you're Pinoy, then you should be proud of your kababayan. You will never have progress if you're always negative. Just be happy for other people's blessings!

Congratulations, Charice! I would be really shocked if Charice doesn't get nominated for a Grammy next year. Her album is very well put together and simply perfect, from the lyrics to her performance, perfect talaga.
Charice, you're the only one responsible for your success. I hope she's not being made to feel that she is reponsible for other Filipino artists too, to get them noticed also. I think it's not fair and so tacky of those people to use Charice just to promote the other artists.

I hope we can get rid of our crab mentality because one of our kababayans become successful in life. No matter what a person's religion is, it is his humanity that counts. Being a catholic, buddhist, hindu, muslim, jew, baptist, INC, atheist, agnostic, etc., is not a substiture for haning a kind heart and love for others. The Bible says LOVE is the most important of all the virtues and if you have our love, it does not matter what your religion is.

bakit ba parang uso ang bigotry sa PEP? kung hindi tinitira ang ibang lahi gaya ng mga indians at arabo, namimintas naman ng ibang relihiyon. kahit pa pagano, hudyo, o muslim si charice wala tayong karapatang pulaan siya dahil kelanganan natin respetuhin ang desisyon niya the same way na gusto din nating respetuhin tayo ng iba with regard to our chosen way of life. INC ang mga magulang ko pero wala akong bitter na comment kay charice basta kahit ano pa man ang relihiyon mo, continue honing your skills and continue being a good and humble person.

Let us all be one in congratulating and wishing the best for Charice--the first Asian ever to hit the Top Ten in the Billboard Charts for a debut album. We cannot also argue religion--this is a personal preference. Let us just all be proud of Charice who is equally proud of being Filipino! This 2010 is a good year not only for Charice but for the Philippines, it appears! Let us all thank God always for His graces to His people! Personally, am going out today to buy her album at Target! I really enjoy listening to her music since I first heard her on YT. God bless Charice! God bless our beloved Philippines!
