After his acting stint on television, singer Guji Lorenzana now allots most of his time rehearsing for the theatrical adaptation of the Hollywood movie Legally Blonde, which starred Reese Witherspoon.
The singer-theater actor will give life to the character of Warner Huntington III, the Harvard Law School student who will break the heart of Elle Woods (Nikki Gil). In the Hollywood movie, Guji's role was portrayed by Matthew Davis.
In an interview, Guji said that he doesn't have a problem switching from being a singer to an actor or do both at the same time.
"You can't always be open and say na I'm a theater artist kasi minsan the impression of theater is different from other people. But it's all art in itself. It's a different part of art ko," he said during the press launch of the debut album of VOIZboys, Fusion, held last week at Eastwood City, Libis, Quezon City.
The only problem that Guji experienced while doing the musical was being required to speak straight English.
Guji, who was born and raised in California, U.S., explained, "Actually, nahihirapan ako kasi I've been trying to practice Tagalog. Then here, they want me to speak straight English, so I'm stuggling with my English naman."
The popular Broadway musical, which is locally produced by Atlantis Production, will be staged in Meralco Theater on June 25 and 26, July 3, 16, and 17.
PROMOTING VOIZBOYS. Aside from Legally Blonde, Guji also balances his time in promoting the first album VOIZboys with co-singers Jay-R Siaboc, Nico Antonio, and Tom Rodriguez.
The 27-year-old singer said he thought they wouldn't be able to release the album anymore especially when Pinoy Dream Academy alumnus Ronnie Liang was still part of their group.
VOIZboys was not able to produce an album that time because Ronnie has a contract with Universal Records. Since Ronnie was replaced by Tom, the group has been cleared from possible conflict in existing contracts of each member.
He added that they also waited for the response of the audience since they were launched in ASAP early last year. Guji recalled, "I remember sabi nila, 'Let's see what goes in ASAP. Kung may recall and following, sige, try natin.' We got lucky. People started following us, following the group."
As a group, Guji said they intend to make their own mark in the music scene.
He said, "We really want to work, we really want to show na we have talent, we could sing. Kaya sinasabi ko sa kanila na dapat sa mga performance na ganito, dapat we should do acapellas, beat boxing. We should show na we're versatile as a group."
KAYE-JI LOVETEAM. On the other hand, Guji admitted that he has turned down several acting offers because of his prior commitments.
Does this mean there will be no follow-up to his hit tandem with Kaye Abad in Precious Hearts Romances Presents Somewhere In My Heart?
"There is still a Kaye-Ji loveteam," assured Guji. "You know, there were three projects that came. But because of schedule conflicts, nothing happened. But feeling ko, meron because the Kaye-Ji's are very, very supportive sa amin ni Kaye. Me and Kaye are just waiting."
