Martin Nievera admits that his hosting stint in the musical game show Twist and Shout is a whole new experience.
Although the Concert King has had enough experience hosting a show—from Penthouse Live! in the '80s to his own late-night talk shows Martin After Dark, which ran for almost a decade (1988-1998), and Martin Late @ Nite (1998-2002) to the longest Sunday variety show ASAP—he still feels like a newbie working for the local adaptation of this European TV program.
"Never pa akong gumawa ng isang game show," said Martin in an interview with PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) before the finals night of MYX VJ Search last night, July 21, at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. His eldest son, Robin, was one of the winners of the VJ search. (CLICK HERE to read related story.)
He explained, "Kasi, may mga host na magaling sa mga game show, may mga host na madaldal lang, may mga host na magaling mag-interview. I don't know where I stand kasi 'yong hilig ko talaga, 'yong talk show."
However, being unfamiliar with game shows does not keep Martin from enjoying his new job with fellow pop icon Gary Valenciano.
For him, it's important to just keep the fun on the show so that every household watching them will be entertained as well.
"Sa Twist and Shout, 'yong mga ginagawa ng contestant, napakawalang sense, napakasaya lang. Para naman may konting happiness diyan sa TV sets ninyo. Kami ni Gary, ang gagawin lang namin is to organize the chaos, to organize the fun para may konting sense sa walang sense," described Martin.
Aside from Twist and Shout and ASAP, Martin would also love to go back to interviewing fellow celebrities, just like old times when he was still doing his late-night talk show.
According to Martin, he realized he missed his show when "I saw that KC had a new TV show na parang talk show katulad ni Sharon [Cuneta]. Sabi ko, 'Baka this is a sign na babalik ang talk show.'"
Martin said at that time when talk shows did not appeal yet to Filipino televiewers, his show managed to stay longer. He recalled, "Kasi, sa panahon ko na may Martin Late at Night or Martin After Dark sa kabilang istasyon [GMA-7], hindi pa uso yata. Hindi pa masyadong may demand for a talk show."
The Concert King added, "I think na-miss din ng mga artista kasi 'yong talk show ko dati, parang kunwari mayroon akong teleserye, 'yong buong cast puwede mag-guest. I mean, we have so much time para mag-investigate ng mga buhay ng mga artista na hindi sinasabi ng press, hindi sinasabi ng mga talk show.
"Sa talk show, you can be with yourself, you can be with your family, you can talk about your history. Napakasaya at maraming artista na talagang gusto nila ang talk show ko kasi puwede silang magsalita na hindi mabilisan at nagmamadali."
If given a chance, Martin would not think twice to do this again. "Kung mayroon, kung one of these days mauso na naman ang talk shows, sana babalik ako sa talk show dahil 'yan talaga ang forte ko," he said.
What kind of talk show would he want to host this time?
