Pinay Marielle Corpuz's (middle) participation in The World Championships of the Performing Arts is sweeter the second time around! In 2008, she lost to Jamaica's Andrew Clarke. This year, she's adjudged the World Champion Performer. Joining her in proudly waving the Philippine flag are Pinoy Dream Academy semifinalist Panky Trinidad (left), and 2005 WCOPA grand champion Jed Madela.

Another Pinay shone brightly at The World Championships of the Performing Arts (WCOPA) held at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, California last July 23.

Her name is Marielle Corpuz, whose winning piece "What Kind of Fool Am I?" bested her closest rival, the representative of Belarus.

Marielle dedicated her award to the country. "Itong pagkapanalo ko ay para sa bansa natin!" she said in her text message to Carlo Orosa, Talents Group head of Stages Management and national director of WCOPA.

Annie Mercado, who manages singer Jed Madela, witnessed Marielle's remarkable performance and related the Pinoy bet's triumphant moment.

Mercado said, "Sobra ang iyak niya sa stage! Sumigaw nang sumigaw  habang inaabot sa kanya ang trophy. Sobrang galing ng [representative ng] Belarus, kaso pumiyok nang konti sa 'Gethsemane'. E, back to zero ang scores, nanalo si Marielle. Iba ang angas niya, e."

The singing champion now joins the ranks of previous WCOPA champions Jed Madela (2005), Aria Clemente (2007), Cathy Loria (2008), and Rhap Salazar (2009).

It was Marielle's second time to join WCOPA. In 2008, she made it to the finals, but lost to Jamaica's Andrew Clarke. Her piece then was Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing."

Other Pinoy finalists were Kaye Miranda and Micah Roi Torre. The latter competed against New York-based Pinay Leiana Sta. Ana, who represented the U.S. and bagged the Junior World Champion title.
