Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz says her statement about Cebuanos was misinterpreted

"Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say or to answer [questions] in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English," explains Gloria Diaz about her previous statement that allegedly insulted the Cebuanos and made her  "persona non grata" in the Queen City of the South.

Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz's statement about getting an interpreter for Philippine representatives to beauty pageants has earned criticism from Cebuanos.

In a previous interview with ABS-CBN reporter Mario Dumaual, the 1969 Miss Universe agreed that maybe it's about time for Filipina beauty queens to get an interpreter during the question-and-answer portion of international beauty pageants. This was in reaction to Maria Venus Raj's "major-major" answer during the Miss Universe 2010 pageant where she finished 4th runner-up. (CLICK HERE to read related article)

Gloria Diaz said, "That's a good suggestion, especially we have Filipinos all over the world who can interpret anything. I think she thinks in Tagalog and answers in English. But I can relate to that because I used to think in English and answer in Tagalog, and it was very difficult for me."

She suggested that our candidates should have an option to answer in their native dialect. "Kasi, when you think about a Cebuana can hardly speak English and, of course, Tagalog, maybe she should answer in Bisaya," the actress explained.

This remark irked Cebuanos and prompted them to call for a public apology from Diaz.

The online version of Cebu-based newspaper Sun Star reported today, September 1, that Cebu City Representative Rachel "Cutie" del Mar expressed her disappointment during a privilege speech yesterday, August 31.

"It is with much regret that Diaz, who once brought glory to this proud nation, has awakened a sleeping giant: Cebuanos' strong aversion to anti-Cebuano insulting remarks," she said.

Rep. del Mar added, "I therefore call on Diaz to issue a sincere public apology to the Cebuano people. It is the most responsible thing to do as the battle for national unity rages."

Following this, Bombo Radyo Philippines reported on its website that the Vice Mayors League of the Philippines-Cebu has issued a resolution declaring the former Miss Universe "persona non grata" in the Queen City of the South.

GLORIA EXPLAINS. Diaz clarified that she never said Cebuanos cannot speak English or that her statement meant to insult them.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, she said, "Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say, or to answer, [questions] in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English.

"If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. But if you're Ilocano who speaks good English, say it in English. If you're Cebuano who can speak Spanish, if you're comfortable with Spanish, say it in Spanish. That's what I said and that's what I meant."

Diaz was also shocked when she found out that people got angry over her statement.

"I was like, shocked. Everybody was so angry.  I thought they're gonna stone me to death!" she said with a laugh. "I want to just make people realize it is just... You know, say it with whatever you're comfortable with."

i am a Bisaya. I speak in Cebuano. I worked in Cebu for about 2 years. And I will admit. madami OA na Cebuano and insecure sila day. Their insecurity to the Tagalogs are just so level up. As shown in so many posts here. So OA. There is nothing wrong with what the former Ms. Universe said. Hello. She just meant to use our own native tongue. Noong lumipat ako dito sa Manila, I was happy to work with the Tagalogs and di sila insecurada. This post is not Anti-Cebuanos / cebuanas ha. Pero it is time to wake up I think. React dayon mga Cebuano. In the company that I worked before sa Cebu, pag may Tagalog na na hire, kawawa, pinag titripan ng mga CEBUANO. take note ha. In that company, may mga taga Cagayan, taga Bohol, taga Leyte, taga Naga, and other parts of the Visayas. Helow! wal

For that, she should be banned at Cebu! Simple. I am not a Cebuano, but our dialect here in Cagayan de Oro City is Cebuano-Bisayan, and we, as speakers of the language are greatly offended by her blasphemous remark; an inexcusable remark against the people and the language that is spoken by MAJORITY of the Filipinos; whether you like it of not, Bisaya is now spoken by more Filipinos than Tagalog. We are honestly hurt! We are not over-reacting for this is a normal reaction of someone who cares enough for his own culture.

Ang problema kasi sa mga Tagalog, feeling nila they are Superior! A fact which is supported by Sociologists and other social scientists.

ayaw lang talagang i-acknowledge ang obvious that she offended people whether she was misinterpreted or not. pwede naman sanang sabihing 'it was not my intention and i'm sorry.' dini-fend pa lalo ang sarili. ma-pride sobra. well, bilog ang mundo. deserving naman pala talaga sa persona non grata status. at least sa ngayon may constructive action laban sa kanya.

    pokerface13:

    What I mentioned was quot;Kung insecure...quot;
    merong quot;kungquot; na word duon.

    Tsk tsk tsk.

I never used foul words like you did.

    Adik k ba?

Tagalog na nga halos ang salita ko.

And yes, that's how I'm brought up, never to be ashamed to say what's on my mind pero irespeto ang opinion ng iba...Clearly YOU ARE insisting yours. At ikaw ang feeling superior. Di mo pansin? Feeling mo ikaw ang lang ang tama.

    Medyo kaw yata nakakaawa...

Unconciously, you're superiority complex is attacking once again. It simply shows how were you raised. I'm so sorry for you for having such mentality.

and oh, did you say Gloria deserves an apology from the people who misunderstood her? Are you really serious with this? Is it really your honest opinion? I hope not coz it's so lame.

Cebuanos maybe overreacting but still they are hurt. Others think it's just a petty thing but we have to consider their feelings as well. Gloria Diaz maybe misinterpreted but the bottom line is, when someone is hurt in anyways that we say and/or we do, we should be humble enough to apologize. It will not make us a lesser person when we say sorry

Kaya magulo ang Maynila kasi more than 50 percent ng naninirahan ay mga Bisaya, particularly mga Cebuano. Kaya maraming holdaper, kawatan, snatcher dahil sa mga probinsyanong napadpad sa Manila at walang alam gawin kungdi mang-hold up, night club dancer, etc.

    -----------------------------------
