Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz says her statement about Cebuanos was misinterpreted

"Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say or to answer [questions] in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English," explains Gloria Diaz about her previous statement that allegedly insulted the Cebuanos and made her  "persona non grata" in the Queen City of the South.

Former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz's statement about getting an interpreter for Philippine representatives to beauty pageants has earned criticism from Cebuanos.

In a previous interview with ABS-CBN reporter Mario Dumaual, the 1969 Miss Universe agreed that maybe it's about time for Filipina beauty queens to get an interpreter during the question-and-answer portion of international beauty pageants. This was in reaction to Maria Venus Raj's "major-major" answer during the Miss Universe 2010 pageant where she finished 4th runner-up. (CLICK HERE to read related article)

Gloria Diaz said, "That's a good suggestion, especially we have Filipinos all over the world who can interpret anything. I think she thinks in Tagalog and answers in English. But I can relate to that because I used to think in English and answer in Tagalog, and it was very difficult for me."

She suggested that our candidates should have an option to answer in their native dialect. "Kasi, when you think about a Cebuana can hardly speak English and, of course, Tagalog, maybe she should answer in Bisaya," the actress explained.

This remark irked Cebuanos and prompted them to call for a public apology from Diaz.

The online version of Cebu-based newspaper Sun Star reported today, September 1, that Cebu City Representative Rachel "Cutie" del Mar expressed her disappointment during a privilege speech yesterday, August 31.

"It is with much regret that Diaz, who once brought glory to this proud nation, has awakened a sleeping giant: Cebuanos' strong aversion to anti-Cebuano insulting remarks," she said.

Rep. del Mar added, "I therefore call on Diaz to issue a sincere public apology to the Cebuano people. It is the most responsible thing to do as the battle for national unity rages."

Following this, Bombo Radyo Philippines reported on its website that the Vice Mayors League of the Philippines-Cebu has issued a resolution declaring the former Miss Universe "persona non grata" in the Queen City of the South.

GLORIA EXPLAINS. Diaz clarified that she never said Cebuanos cannot speak English or that her statement meant to insult them.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, she said, "Let me clarify it once and for all. People should have the right to say, or to answer, [questions] in whatever language they want to say it in. If they're Cebuanos, they can say it in Cebuano. I did not say that they did not speak English.

"If you're Ilocano, say it in Ilocano. But if you're Ilocano who speaks good English, say it in English. If you're Cebuano who can speak Spanish, if you're comfortable with Spanish, say it in Spanish. That's what I said and that's what I meant."

Diaz was also shocked when she found out that people got angry over her statement.

"I was like, shocked. Everybody was so angry.  I thought they're gonna stone me to death!" she said with a laugh. "I want to just make people realize it is just... You know, say it with whatever you're comfortable with."

Well, I saw GD's explaination.

kelangan lang nyang mag-apologize to those she has offended so actually di kasali ang di na-offend at di dapat makisawsaw sa usapan.

subjective nga ang interpretasyon kasi hindi ito math or science with definite right or wrong answers. who gets to determine what is offensive or not and how should one interpret and feel towards her statement? lahat yan subjective but one thing for sure is that merong mga na-offend and they would appreciate an apology na ipinagdadamot nya kasi she wants to be unreasonable and prolong the issue

Apologize for what? It's not her fault that some people are too d u mb to understand a simple statement and too bored to make a big deal out of everything.

gloria diaz, you need to choose your words carefully. your words are very telling – they reflect your prejudices and biases. you polarize. you perpetuate regionalism and negative stereotypes.
please cultivate sensitivity and empathy for others who you think lack the sophistication and culture you claim to possess. you may be a renowned beauty title holder but in other areas in your life – your love life in particular - you were in the margins, undercover even, so you must know how it feels to be looked down upon and how hurtful and dehumanizing it is.

with regards to what Miss Venus Raj said, I don't think she meant 'bongang-bongga' when she said '...major, major....'

Like what Venus explained in one of her interviews, when you want to emphasize something, sometimes you repeat the word. I agree with her.

When you're super happy, sometimes you say, 'I'm very, very happy'.

When you saw a huge balloon, sometimes you say, 'I saw a big, big balloon'.

When you haven't committed a major mistake in your life has left a serious damage or efffect to you or to your life, you may say, 'I haven't committed a major, major mistake in my life....'

I agree that Venus could have phrased her answer much better and much clearer, but the CONTENT of her statement still answered the question right.

The real issue in any beauty pageant Qamp;A is NOT the ability to speak English....

It is the ABILITY TO COMPREHEND A QUESTION AND AND GIVE THE ANSWER A QUESTION IS ASKING FOR.

If you must observe sa lahat ng beauty pageant, karamihan sa mga sinasagot ng mga candidates sa question ay MALAYO sa tinatanong.

Sa Miss USA nalang, English is the native language of 95 percent to 100 percent of all the candidates, THEY'RE VERY FLUENT IN ENGLISH BUT A LOT OF THEM DON'T ANSWER THE QUESTION CORRECTLY.

With regards to this article, UNDERSTANDING and INTERPRETATION of what Miss Gloria Diaz said is the ISSUE, it's NOT EXACTLY THE CONTENT of what she said.

NO MATTER WHAT A PERSON SAYS, HER OR HIS MESSAGE CAN BE INTERPRETED DIFFERENTLY BY HER OR HIS AUDIENCE...EITHER CLOSE OR FAR FROM WHAT SHE OR HE ACTUALLY MEANS.
