Last year, FHM-Philippines' special issue, FHM Collections, featured Robin Padilla as its first male cover. For the 2010 FHM Collections special issue, the country's leading men's lifestyle magazine got multi-talented artist Cesar Montano as their second male cover.
FHM's managing editor Allan Hernandez explained to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press at their presscon yesterday, September 2, at the Bahia Room of the Hotel Intercontinental in Makati City, why they got Cesar for their cover.
"Kung nung last year si Mr. Robin Padilla, parang siya yung rock-solid specimen ng kalalakihan, this year, inisip namin na ilagay naman sa cover yung isang tipo ng lalaki na, ganun din, rock solid, pero at the same time nagpapakita rin ng soft side, ng sensitivity, yung ganung tipo. So, naisip namin si Mr. Cesar ang tingin namin na perfect na cover," Allan said.
The FHM managing editor adds that Cesar not only acts and hosts, he is also a director, a painter and a folk singer. "Ang dami niyang facets sa personality niya na hindi common sa karamihan ng lalaki. So, in-explore namin yung side na yun ng personality niya. Yung ganung tipo ng personality na multi-faceted. May soft and strong side."
"Tumatanggap din ako ng labada," Cesar jokingly butts in.
Cesar's cover is noticeably different from Robin's 2009 cover. While Robin stood solo and projected a "dangerously sharp" look, Cesar looks relaxed and cool sitting between two ladies (one behind him and another in front) who appear to be wearing just their undergarments. What's more intriguing—and reason enough for envy among the men present at the presscon—is that Cesar's head is positioned between the legs of the lady behind him.
What was his wife Sunshine Cruz's reaction to his FHM cover?
"Eto, kagagaling lang po ng mga pasa ko." Everyone in the room laughed at Cesar's joke.
"No, seriously," he went on, "I showed her, way before the pictorial took place, nakita na niya yung study, yung concept. Actually, tuwang-tuwa siya. Sabi pa nga niya, 'Ang galing ng idea, ang ganda!' Kasi meron pa kaming hindi nagawa na, siguro, kulang na lang yung mga lugar, siguro. Para paglagyan nung... Siyempre, hindi naman para sa akin yung lahat ng pages ng FHM, there are so many concepts na, ako personally, I liked it. And ito yung mga natira na talagang pinili nila.
"But this one [points at his cover], hirap na hirap nga ako diyan, e," Cesar says while laughing. "No, hindi naman ako nahirapan. Sunshine, my wife, basically is very, very level-headed and broadminded herself about these things."
Speaking of his wife, since Sunshine holds the honor of being the very first Filipina cover of FHM, is it okay for him if she poses sexy again for FHM ?
"Siguro dapat siya ang tanungin natin. Ako, I've been a huge fan of FHM. Talagang tinitingnan ko kung ano ang mga bago nila, not for the nudity, but ideas that I could also use in filming, mga gano'n. Minsan nakakakuha ka dun, e. But me as an artist, I totally respect the artistry of FHM when it comes to photography and how to use talent, how to use a certain person sa print. Yun po ang nakikita ko.
"And with regards to Sunshine, hindi ko makakalimutan ang kanyang cover. Kasi noon ang nakalagay pa roon, isa sa mga topics doon, 'Supot vs. Tuli.' Asar na asar siya dun." Cesar still teases his wife about that feature story's title landing on her cover. "Sabi ko, 'Ganda ng cover mo, ah. Meron pang Supot vs. Tuli!'
"But seriously, she loves it [her cover photo] and I love it too."
