Rafa Santos (main photo), a young filmmaker, made a remark about his reason for getting theater actors for his films. But this irked some people from the showbiz industry, including the lead star of his Cinemalaya film, Samarito, Bea Garcia (inset).

"Personally, I find the theater actors better to work with because they don't complain, you can feed them Sky Flakes three meals a day, and pay them in catfood, basically."

(CLICK HERE to read related story.)

WHO IS RAFA? Sino nga ba si Rafael "Rafa" Santos?

Ayon sa kanyang profile bilang filmmaker sa Cinemalaya website:

"Rafa Santos was born Rafa Santos back in 1985 and has been growing ever since.

"1999: Rafa stops growing.

"2007: Rafa enters Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute where, mentored over the next two years by the likes of Laurice Guillen, Mark Meily, the late Johnny Delgado and the venerable Marilou Diaz-Abaya herself, Rafa gains the ability and wherewithal to maybe someday make a Cinemalaya worthy movie.

"2011: Rafa finally makes a Cinemalaya worthy movie.

"With the indispensable support of close friends Bea Garcia, Nico Dabon and Melvin Fausto, "Samarito" was shot mainly in Rafa's kitchen, edited mainly in his room and scored mainly in the shower.

I wonder why people reacted so vehemently. They are like Pharisees during the time of Jesus Christ. They look at themselves so righteous, but mind you, they are worse than Rafa. My suggestion is that they should try to take a look at themselves first and see if how they deal with people or treat others were less unkind than what Rafa uttered. I wonder why people are like these.

I don't know but I think people reacted too much because what Rafa said is a picture of a sad reality happening to the people behind independent films. I find it not that offensive but we cannot blame them for reacting to such statements. I just hope that may this be a lesson to everyone that the end doesn't justify the means. He just wanted to recognize how dedicated theater actors are for working without being given the right compensation but he failed for he chose the wrong words. Just my opinion. Peace!!

Na-misinterpret lng un cnabi nya abt theater actors, but I think he means it in a gud way, mali lng kse un choice of words nya.In fairness 2 him, totoo nman mas maayos kausap at ka-trabaho mga theater actors, hndi kse cla umaarte para sa pera lng at gumigimik para panoorin lng ng tao.

hyberbole or whatever, still the comment leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth. he should not have been that tactless. he could have merely stated that -- Theatre Actors get paid less but they are more effective -- something to that effect...

it seems that Rafa is a very intellegent director. Yong choice of word nya grabe tama ang isang nagcomment, hyperbole ang gamit nya. so that means ang ibig sabihin lang nya na FEED by ekek, means cheaper rates ang talent fees ng theater actors compared to showbiz actors. naku naman, over reaction naman yan. bakit true naman ah? mas mura ang talent fee ng mga theater actors kesa showbiz actors natin dyan sa pinas! get a life people! bat ayaw nyo tumanggap ng truth?

wanna change, hyperbole is a figure of speech that uses exaggeration. I think this was the figure of speech rafa santos used to describe his experience with theatre actors. don't take it literally. while the joke may have been in poor taste, it's ironic that artists can't understand the rhetoric.

I don't think he meant any harm of what he say, it just happen that it was cat food and sky flakes that come out from his mouth, he is basically making a compliment to those actors. May mag react kaya if mention the steak and hamburger instead of cat food and sky flakes? He already apologized so give him a brake.

Like some said here, reading Rafa's comment, I don't think he meant to insult Theater actors. Actually, I felt he praised them pa nga saying that they are far better than those in showbiz. Don't give them the perks like what showbiz does, and still they would give you their best, the best in what they do and not cry. Professional till the very end. Iyon nga lang, with our culture, hindi matanggap ng tao ang sinabi niya. He should have chosen his words. Pero, if you look at it..and aminin, ang Theater Actors, they may not get a good salary like the one in the big tube or tv, but they will still give you the best of their work. Yung mga nasa showbiz, masyadong maraming arte, once they get the taste of money, power and praise from the people. This is showbiz now, not like showbiz before.

The words used are derogatory indeed, has rafa ignored the Filipino culture? Ang mga ibang lahi..don't wanna mention anong lahi..they can be frank without really hurting someone's feeling. Kelangan niyang maturuan ng Glamour Words ika nga.
