Nakausap ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang award-winning filmmaker na si Mario O'Hara noong Miyerkules ng gabi, July 27, sa tahanan ng mga O'Hara, sa Bangkal, Makati City.

Ang pakay ng PEP ay upang hingan ng komento si Direk Mario tungkol sa napaulat na reklamo ng isang grupo ng mga screenwriters na kasali sa mga naging entries sa Directors' Showcase category ng nakaraang Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival ng Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Ang reklamo ng mga ito ay sa dahilang walang ibinigay na parangal ang Cinemalaya Filmfest Awards noong July 24 para sa mga kategoryang Best Screenplay at Special Jury Prize sa mga entries ng Directors' Showcase.

Walang pormal na inihaing reklamo ang mga screenwriters, kabilang sina Jerry Gracio, may akda ng screenplay ng Isda (Fable of the Fish); Paul Sta. Ana  ng Bisperas (Intruders); Kristoffer Brugada ng Patikul; at Auraeus Solito at Henry Burgos ng Busong (Palawan Fate).

Pero may mga pahayag sila na nagrereklamo laban sa mga hurado, kundi man nagpu-point out ng saloobin at isipan sa naging desisyon na napalathala sa isang pahayagan.

Kabilang si Mario O'Hara sa Cinemalaya Jury sa taong ito.  

Kasama niya ang kapwa-premyadong writer-director na si Clodualdo "Doy" Del Mundo, Jr.; National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal (Jury Head); Jacob Wong, festival director of Hong Kong International Filmfest; at Jean-Marc Therouanne, isang Pranses, na co-founder at CEO ng Vesoul International Filmfest of Asian Cinema sa France.

WRITERS' COMPLAINTS. Dahil walang Best Screenplay (at Special Jury Prize) awards sa Directors' Showcase category ng Cinemalaya 2011, ang mga nabanggit na screenwriters ay nag-voice out ng kanilang "informal protest."

"Films that get accepted to Cinemalaya are not ready-made. When you don't hand out this award, it's similar to saying all the scripts in this category are trash," pahayag ni Jerry Gracio. 

Ayon naman kay Paul Sta. Ana, ang naging desisyon ng Cinemalaya jurors ay "weird and surprising."

Dagdag pa niya, "The basic structure of a film is based on its screenplay. The characters in the film are roles written in a screenplay. The story didn't come from the director but from me [the screenwriter]."

Pahayag naman ni Kritstoffer Brugada, "We all deserve an explanation. This is surprising, not just for me who joined the festival for the first time, but also for those who have been part of it for many years."

May pansarili mang opinyon, tanging si Auraeus Solito ang nagsalita "for the jurors."

Solito considers local jury members Mario O'Hara and Doy Del Mundo, Jr. "both masters of their craft."

Sa kanyang opinyon, sina O'Hara at Del Mundo ay nananangan pa rin sa mga akdang "very structured and well-written."

Ani Solito, "It's the 21st century; we must learn to evolve... [so as not to] be left behind."

Bago ganapin ang Cinemalaya Filmfest ay katatapos lamang dumalo ni Auraeus sa isang screenplay development program sa Binger Film Lab sa Amsterdam, Holland.
