PEP EXCLUSIVE: Azkals manager Dan Palami reacts to Facebook post comparing his team to the Philippine Dragon Boat Team

"It's unfortunate there are people still thinking about these things instead of supporting each sport or the Filipino athlete, as a whole. Pinakikita nila yung medyo, gaano kakitid yung pagkakaintindi nila sa mga sports na ito," says Philippine Azkals manager Dan Palami (in photo) about the Facebook post comparing the Azkals to the Dragon Warriors, the Philippine Dragon Boat Team.

PH Azkals: 0 Golds, 0 trophies, 5 TV ads, 20% Pinoy
PH Dragonboat team (2011) : 5 Golds, 0 commercials, 90% Pinoy
PH Azkals: with sponsors
...Ph Dragon boat team: inutang at KKB pamasahe.
Ph Azkals: complete outfit

"It's unfortunate there are people still thinking about these things instead of supporting each sport or the Filipino athlete, as a whole.

"To be honest about it, I'm quite disappointed with the way these people think.

"First of all, there's no such thing as 20 percent Filipino, or 80 percent... We are all Filipinos.

"At tayo man, saan man tayo makarating, o anuman ang sport na nire-represent natin, we carry our flag.

"We should carry it with pride and not carry it at the expense of other sports," diin ni Palami.

"On the second note, yung nakikita ko rin sa Facebook... parang nagrereklamo sila sa suporta na binibigay siguro, o kino-compare, and actually saying na we should be fair and susuportahan din dapat natin yung dragon boat.

I think it is good to share a piece of knowledge from what I read. It is a MUST know BTW. This is from Jums Strongfire. Feel free to correct these information if you know something different BUT I DOUBT IT. Anyway, he said, "barely 8 months ago December 2010, after beating defending champion Vietnam in the Asean Football Federation’s biennial Suzuki Cup. prior to that historic win, THE AZKALS WERE ALSO UNKNOWN AND UNSUPPORTED. kaya nga AZKALS ang ginamit nilang team monicker because when they were starting to rebuild football in the Philippines, they got almost NIL support from the government, private sectors and Filipino fans. It's really unfortunate that here in the Philippines, teams/athletes need to WIN FIRST before they get the needed support, and not the other way around: support the athletes FIRST for them to win. That win vs Vietnam, which made it to Sports Illustrated’s Top 10 Football Stories in 2010, was the turning point for the azkals to FINALLY get the support that they are enjoyi

WRONG. People don't root for just the winners. Bandwagon fan ka lang if you only stick by a team when they're winning. THat's the worst kind of fan. A TRUE FAN can recognize when a team is playing with ALL HEART. The Azkals showed that in their battle against mighty Kuwait that's why even after the loss, no one left the stadium and even applauded the boys during their lap of honor. MORE LOVE WAS GIVEN TO THE AZKALS AFTER THEY LOST. They know the Azkals gave a good fight and that's what's so beautiful about football. Fans stay LOYAL through thick and thin, through victories and losses. The FIGHT FOR VICTORY is just as important as WINNING. Football is not for bandwagon fans. Football is for fans who have the BRAINS and THE HEART to survive the emotions and difficult plays that happen during a game. People who only watch simple races will NEVER understand the concept of a GOOD COMPLICATED FIGHT. But to those whose eyes and hearts have been opened to the uphill climb in every football match, how EV

I don't believe Filipinos go for looks be it in sports, arts or politics. We always tend to go for the winners and those with mass appeal. Take the case of Manny Pacquiao, Nora Aunor, and PNoy. These are not good-looking nor foreign-looking personalities but they are winners and have mass appeal. It is the fault of marketing people that all these became about looks, fashion, body. But eventually, we forget the losers and go for the winners whether he or she looks perfect or otherwise.

And it smacks of sheer arrogance that the bashers criticize the FANS for choosing Football. Bashers, please do a quick google search on what is the most popular spectator sport in the world and educate yourselves. Is Dragonboat or any form of rowing in the list? Even the rest of the world doesn't give a rat's a s s about that 'sport'. Yet you criticize pinoy fans for embracing a sport that is loved by the rest of humanity? What holds true for the rest of the world shouldn't be a shock that it should also apply to the Philippines.

And do you really think those people who stand in line and get drenched in Rizal Memorial Stadium just to cheer for the Azkals are just there for the pretty faces? Haha. Pretty faces can sell magazines but my god...it's not enough to win loyalty to stay in a stormy venue and cheer for a team that's struggling to win against a mighty foe. THAT my friend, is what you call LOVE for the Beautiful Game. A Kind of LOVE and PASSION that only FOOTBALL can inspire. Ipagdasal niyo na lang na someday Rowing o Dragonboat ek ek can be that inspiring. But I doubt it.

i think the point of the FB post is that most filipinos are supporting the Azkals just because they are "foreign looking" and that the filipinos are being "colonial minded". true, the azkals have been there since 19-kopong kopong and it only got "revived" recently. but were the players "filipino looking" --meaning moreno, not-so-tall, di matangos ilong-- would it have received the same support, public or private? it's not about which is the better sport between dragon boat racing and football, but about what kind of fans the filipinos are. admit it, do azkals fans really like football? or do they want to see "pogi" faces?

I understand your dismay Mr Dan. Kase TRUTH HURTS! I think dapat lang kaseng umiwas ang mga Askals in too much publicity. They should know what to prioritize. Instead of having too much commercials and interviews eh mag training nalang sila para makauwi nang medal. The post isn't from anti-askals, it is just a truth that we Filipino should know how to appreciate things not in terms of looks, complexion or blood. Hay life, kaya dont be bitter Mr Dan. Just accept the TRUTH.

Hello, Dan! I hope you will strive in your endeavour for a better sporty world in the Philippines. Just caution your players not to be involved in too much publicity or showbiz affairs. Sports and showbiz does not blend well it seems. Take the case of James Yap, Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson, etc., etc.

Let's be realistic. Philippines' financial resources are severely limited. Kaming mga Azkals fans, we'll be here to support Philippine Football come what may.

honeybadger...that's because Philippine network media is the biggest BANDWAGON FAN of the Azkals. Notice that alot of the TV reporters that cover the Azkals know ZERO about football? If you want reliable football information about the Azkals, you have to go to the broadsheets articles written by bona fide sports journalists who understand the game. And that goes for all their beats! Diba parating may slant? Either Rich vs Poor or Good vs Evil? Or kung sino ang ka-love-team ni ganito? TV reports continuously perpetuate the MARA CLARA SOAP OPERA LOVING Mentality to the viewing public.

honeybadger...ganyan talaga. Kapag sikat at panalo, you will attract all sorts of fans. I don't want to belittle those who start out by admiring the players looks kasi eventually, some of them will develop a love for the game beyond the players. Yung mga mababaw lang, eh eventually, they'll move on to something else. Time will tell kung totoong dragonboat fans ang mga yan or simply jealous Azkal haters using the Dragonboat team to attack the Azkals. How pathetic.

Grabe. Mega source of protein pala ang tahong. I should tell them to eat tahong instead. Hmmm

Any perceived form of Government Intervention can result in the banning of ALL Philippine Sports Teams from participating in Olympic related events. Meaning, HINDI MAKAKASALI ang Pilipinas sa Olympics, Asian Games at SEA Games if we violate this rule. If they do otherwise, they violate the rule again. And any violation can result in being banned. LAHAT ng RP TEAMS DAMAY!!! Kaya mag-isip isip muna at gamitin ang utak bago pumutak!
