Shamcey Supsup of the Philippines finished as 3rd runner-up in the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier today, September 13.

Angola's Leila Lopes bested 88 other competitors to win the the title of Miss Universe.

Lopes, 25, was also the crowd favorite, getting the loudest cheers from the audience. She is the first candidate from Angola to win the crown.

Olesia Stefanko of Ukraine was the 1st runner-up, while Brazil's Priscila Machado was 2nd runner-up, and China's Luo Zilin was 4th runner-up.

This is the second year in a row that a candidate from the Philippines made it to the Top 5 of Miss Universe. Venus Raj finished 4th runner-up last year.

The Philippines has two Miss Universe winners: Gloria Diaz won the crown in 1969 and Margie Moran repeated the feat in 1973.

In the question-and-answer portion, Shamcey was asked by judge Vivica A. Fox: Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love?

Shamcey, who was the only candidate among the Top 5 who did not use an interpreter, answered:

"If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me. And I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too."

Interestingly, Angola's question came from Filipino judge Lea Salonga: "If you could change one of your personal characteristics, which one would it be and why?"

To which, Leila replied through an interpreter: "Thank God, I’m very well satisfied with the way God created me and I would not change a thing. I consider myself a woman with inner beauty. I have my principles. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I plan to follow this through the rest of my life."

The candidates who made it to the Top 10 are: Australia, Costa Rica, France, Panama, and Portugal, who won the online poll which automatically put her in the semifinals.

Top 16 semifinalists are: Kosovo, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Netherlands, USA, and Venezuela.

Special awards were given to Panama (Best National Costume), Montenegro (Miss Congeniality), and Sweden (Miss Photogenic)

Last year's winner was Ximena Navarrete of Mexico.

It would have spelled a huge difference. It was indeed not politically correct considering that in this world now, we have different religions like Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism etc..She suggested something on her last statement that two people can never be together unless one of them converts to the other religion.

honeybadger, sinabi mo. sa yahoo lang, nagkalat mga sourgraping pinoy doon insisting that Shamcey should have won because she speaks good English and did not have an interpreter. How ignorant! When will we ever learn? I, for one, was not impressed by Shamcey's answer because it's not something I teach my pamangkins. I always tell them to respect other people's religion, spirituality or the lack of it.

Kanino?

When you google that quotation, lahat ng links ay galing sa Filipino bloggers.

tnx sweet irene. and i also agree with you that we should learn from this instead of sour graping. parang nagiging oa na ang reaction ng ibang kababayan natin about shamcey not winning the crown. sa tingin ko nga phils should have been last not china. again, sorry to shamcey and to everybody who believes otherwise, but based on the answers, yan lang po ang paniwala ko.

Whatever? shamcey should have won! Ophrah Winfrey said she should have won because she had no interpreter, no seconds to think of her answers. she was fluent in English. Angola's question was easy, Shamcey's was difficult but she nailed it... Sana mag guest si Shamcey sa show ni Ophrah kasama si charice, Manny P and Arnel P.... bongga di ba?

Acibig, kaya nga pag tinatanong ang mga contestant sa pageant kung ano yung gusto nilang baguhin sa sarili nila, siempre may insecurities din ang mga yan, sino bang wala, pero di nila puedeng sabihin na uy insecure ako sa feet ko na malalaki or kili kili na mabaho, kasi they don't wanna send a message of insecurity and discontent to the women. As a future Miss Universe, they have to set an example of confidence and acceptance. When you are asked at a beauty contest, the question is not really to ask what your opinion is, it is meant to find out if you're the right person to represent the title and crown.

I agree with damon, shamcey answer should be politically correct , your answer should be acceptable to jew, christian , islam etc, di pwede na ipagpilitan mo ang gusto mo sa mga controversial topic like religion n politics coz the winner will be exposed to different cultures, dapat think out of the box , open minded, accept others, dapat ang sinagot nya , love is universal, transcends religion ek ek, but talagang standout si angola, sa gown, hairstyle rampa, pag ikaw sumasali sa ganyan di pwde na yung tama lang sa opinyon mo ang sasabihin mo , if so dont join coz di ka mananalo

Sige nga, if kami nagmamagaling, kayo namang nag insist na Shamcey should have won mas magaling pa sa mga judges. Dapat pala kayo ang kukuhaning judges for next year's Miss Universe. Bakit ba kasi ipagpilitan ang sablay, instead of learning from the experience, mag insist pa rin na tama. Anong tawag natin dyan? ARROGANCE. Shamcey is beautiful but Angola deserves the crown. That's not bad at all.

Angola stood out because she presented herself very naturally, pati smile nya ay genuine.

and oh puhleezzz, stop spreading that false quotation. Nakakahiya kay Miss Oprah. It just makes the Filipinos look desperate and sore losers who can't get over the fact that Shamcey did not win the title.

When u answer a question at a Miss Universe pageant, you're not answering it as you, but as the future female representative of the universe. Shamcey's answer is right according to her and to the people who agree with her, but it does not mean that the whole world think and feel the same way. It's a pageant, not a job interview so when u give an answer, you don't only think of yourself, but what is generally politically correct. Politically correct, to those who don't understand what it means, it means what's appropriate and fair in general.

To those who criticize the candidates for using an interpreter, what's wrong with using your own language? It's Miss Universe pageant, not Miss USA so common sense na from different parts of the world ang mga contestants, and they're representing their own country and culture so it's just right to speak in their native tongue in front of the world.
